Frogs eating rats?!

I’ve noticed this year the frogs aren’t returning to my pond. They come every year.

Have seen a rat in garden. And cat caught 2 I think recently. I read rats will catch frogs. Would they do that? And if so what can I do? Tidied up garden, stopping using fat balls, no seed for birds. Neighbors at back along from us has chickens so probably rats.

I miss the frogs 🐸.

Maybe cat didn't eat the frogs but ate all the frogspawn? Sorry I don't know much about it but clicked on to hear about the massive mutant frogs.

No the cat rarely goes near the pond. Think she’s a bit scared of it but eyes the remaining fish sometimes as she passes. She’s in a lot anyway and sleeping. Apart from catching the odd rat for me in the garden.

Sorry to disappoint all about the massive mutant frogs! 🐸

Rats are brilliant swimmers. They live in sewers. Isn’t it the case that all mammals can swim naturally, except humans lose it past babyhood? I think. So they certainly could be going for frogs.

I would have thought though that a net to keep a cat out would also stop a rat? A rat has a bit more motivation than a pampered puss though and can quite famously get into anything. But how are the mutant frogs getting through??😊

The cat may be involved with the frog hunting, one I see quite often who is usually keen on a bit of attention, ignored me one day as it concentrated on a patch of long grass before catching a frog.

My mum one freaked out because cat was sat on step with two back legs sticking out of her mouth and the frog still croaking from inside the cat's mouth.

I came on here fascinated the monster frogs...

If you have seen one rat then you will soon have many rats, call council pest control.

Maybe they crawl under gaps? I have areas in bottom tiny pond where frogs crawl out, top is mostly fish.

Le sigh. Think I may have to.

My cat used to catch frogs and toads too. You could come down in the morning to a poor frog dried out on the carpet.

Mine did, it was awful. I trod on a half dead one once in the living room- I can still feel the squelch 🤮🤮🤮🤮

The only times my cats have brought in frogs in the past they don’t die but are hopping round the kitchen or freeze and turn belly side up hiding. I don’t think cats like the taste of them. Current cat rarely catches frogs. 🐸

I don't think cats would eat frogspawn, but fish will.

The fish are in separate pond to frogs, separated by a ledge. Frogs can get to fish but not vice versa.

Maybe the frogs laid their spawn in the wrong pond this year?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/04/2026 16:20

When you cleared your garden up, could you have cleared the habitat the frogs required for them to live out the next part of their lifecycle? Or used something that killed off the baby froglets when they left the pond?

No. Frogs would come before then I think. I only cleared it about a week ago.

Not in top one no. They usually travel to lay their eggs. Not seen them at all.

It’s a mystery to me. A lot of the fish died recently too which was strange. Pond is fine, I test water levels have fountain. No heron or cat can get to pond with fish in.
