Welcome everyone, this is our second thread as we craft a blanket for lovely wafflenose. We are heading into the final stages as last posting is MONDAY 13th APRIL. Just looking at the squares already received, we know our blanket is going to be beautiful inside and out. Crafters and donors have been astonishingly generous in both funds and time,. We are so grateful, thank you everyone.

💐

Our previous thread is here...

Have repeated all the original crafting info as it is always useful to have it all in one place for reference.

We bring such sad news, lovely wafflenose has lost her younger daughter (L) through tragic circumstances and we are just so desperately sorry, thoughts very much with waffle, her family and all who loved her daughter. Really really devastating. Life has been desperately cruel. You may well recognise waffle from music/education/Extra-curricular threads here on MN. Both her lovely daughters have been involved with Mumsnet.

We are so glad waffle would like to receive a Woolly Hug. For those new on here, this is a long standing tradition on Mumsnet where folk come together to make a blanket for one of our own who has been bereaved. There will be love crafted into every stitch. We want it to be a tribute and full of memories. We hope it may give whatever comfort it can.

People have described L as a quiet light, the gentlest of souls. Let us make something truly beautiful in her honour.
So we come again asking for help and shall need both crafters and donors of funds of wool. Can you help us? We would be truly grateful. Thank you

Important crafting info
Squares to be six inches, using 4mm needles or hook. Please knot off VERY carefully when finishing or changing colour and sew your ends in, thank you! No blocking please, makes it much easier to join squares.
Simple or complex, made by beginner or expert, we genuinely welcome them all. It really is the love and thought that counts.

We have some ideas for themes..
Initials please E, G, L and K
She played the recorder, the clarinet and the cello, but focused mainly on the clarinet latterly and played in the National Children's Orchestra Under 10s for a while. Her NCO hoodie was bright blue - a bit like Yarnsmith dark turquoise.
She loved art and reading and was very creative. Loved Harry Potter and would probably have been in Hufflepuff house had she been at Hogwarts.
She had a quirky mind and used to love lego.
She was quite a fashionista. Loved Vogue magazine and Miss Dior perfume
Favourite colours were pink and white (pink more than white).
English literature was the love of her life. We are hoping someone can recreate a bookshelf square? One of her favourite books was Jane Eyre. She had also been studying Plath and Hughes.
She loved swimming and the great outdoors, particular the Quantock Hills. (Photo) We are hoping this may act as an inspiration.
Work/volunteering: she did Brownies and Guides and volunteered as a Rainbow Guider and also volunteered on a hospital ward for a while. She worked as a waitress and at the village pub.
She was interested in philosophy and was planning to become a psychologist/counsellor.
She liked Fleetwood Mac.
She kept tropical fish, hamsters and gerbils and loved all other animals especially cats.
She also liked art and photography.
She was very passionate about being an organ donor - and several people have now received life-saving operations because of her. A truly wonderful young woman.

Lots of ideas and ways to get to know L better. If you can recreate a theme on a square, wonderful, but we also need simple squares, A square in one of her favourite colours is perfect too.

The MAIN Colours. We will be using her favourites,
Pinks from pale baby pink through to magenta.
Cream, but only please Drops Merino Extra Fine - Off White (01) or Yarnsmiths Merino DK Superwash - Off White (3045)
Lighter silvers
Greens pale to mid. Think nature inspired
Then embellishments and accents ONLY please (not whole squares)
Blues - sky to navy inc turquoise.
Sunset shades - red, orange, yellow, gold, but only if creating a sunset!
Browns taupe to mid
Charcoal grey
Black

The Yarn we will be Using for Consistency ….
Yarnsmiths Merino DK Superwash - a BIG sale at Wool Warehouse. Has the widest range of colours
Debbie Bliss Rialto DK only available on Love Crafts
Drops Merino Extra Fine DK.
Katia Merino 100% DK
King Cole Luxury Merino DK

Just from the brands listed please because we know they combine for wash and wear. If you still have any of our wools that have been discontinued or have become less easy to find- Artesano Superwash Merino DK, Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK, Patons Merino Extrafine DK or James C. Brett Pure Merino DK in your stash, please do use them.
Posting will be Teddington, please message if you need the address. If you'd like to include a card for her family , please send with your squares. And please don't forget to include your name!
If you can upload photos of your squares on here as we go along, that will be a lovely record, especially if you have donated yarn.
Will set the last posting date once we are underway but it will be approx 6 weeks hence

Thoughts and love very much with waffle, we are so so sorry. Remembering L

We really need an ongoing blog of 'the adventures of Maud and Fawley'. I'm sure it would be popular.

Yes please !! 🩷

And @ifIwerenotanandroid Maud has been inspecting two of yours, finally. She's secretly very impressed, but as you are her mother she's doing her "They're quite good" routine whilst going "Wow"under her breath.

She's still not seen the sibling gerbil squares!!

I love this. Even Maud is a mooching teen...

ScruffMuffin · 20/04/2026 23:38

I'm excited!
Lauren would have been Huffledor too. Her girlfriend recently told me that Pottermore put her into Gryffindor, which was a shock because she was more Hufflepuff. I'm sure the Sorting Hat would have got it right though. Her dad is probably also between those two. GooGoo and I are Ravenclaw. :)

GERBIL DETECTIVE CRACKS CASE OF MISSING GERANIUMS AT NUMBER 29
Neighbourhood bafflement ends as Woolly Hugs HQ once again becomes centre of suburban drama

Residents of Maple Crescent can finally sleep soundly, as the long‑running mystery of the disappearing geraniums has been solved by an unlikely sleuth: Maud, a gerbil of exceptional domestic training and part‑time volunteer at the Woolly Hugs charity headquarters.

The case, which began three weeks ago when Mrs Pennington of No. 29 reported her “prize-winning, RHS‑commended, salmon‑pink geraniums” vanishing overnight, had left neighbours whispering theories over wheelie bins and twitching curtains with renewed enthusiasm.

But yesterday afternoon, Maud — dressed in a practical navy pinafore and a small but authoritative trilby — announced she had cracked the case.

A METHODICAL INVESTIGATION

Witnesses report seeing Maud conducting a full forensic sweep of the front gardens along the street, armed with a magnifying glass, a clipboard, and a thermos of tea. Fawley the cat accompanied her, wearing a high‑visibility vest labelled “SCENE SUPPORT,” though several residents claim she mostly lounged in sunbeams and contributed little.

Knotty, founder of Woolly Hugs and long‑suffering housemate to both, confirmed that Maud had been “working the case between photographing incoming granny squares and making a rather good battenburg cake.”

“Honestly, I thought she was just avoiding the ironing,” Knotty admitted. “But no — she had a full investigative plan. Flow charts. A suspect board. Thumbtacks.”

THE BREAKTHROUGH

According to Maud’s official statement (delivered from atop a garden wall), the breakthrough came when she noticed a trail of suspiciously fresh soil leading from Mrs Pennington’s garden to the side gate of No. 31.

“I followed the evidence,” Maud said, “and also my instincts, which are excellent.”

Inside the garden of No. 31, she discovered the missing geraniums — all of them — planted neatly in a semicircle around a small ornamental pond.

The culprit?

A well‑meaning but visually challenged tortoise named Trevor.

Trevor’s owner, Mr Hughes, explained that the tortoise had recently taken up “light gardening” after being inspired by a documentary on rewilding.

“He means well,” Mr Hughes said. “He just can’t tell the difference between his plants and anyone else’s.”

COMMUNITY REACTION

Mrs Pennington has agreed not to press charges, stating that “one cannot stay angry at a tortoise,” though she has requested Trevor be fitted with “some sort of bell.”

Local residents have praised Maud’s efforts.

“She’s a marvel,” said Mrs Dalloway of No. 33. “I’ve never seen a gerbil take measurements with such authority.”

Fawley, when asked for comment, yawned and wandered off with a knitted granny square in her mouth.

A NOTE OF WARMTH

Knotty took the opportunity to remind the community that Woolly Hugs continues its work through hand crafted items in the hope babies, children and their families will feel love, support, comfort and physical reassurance, the sense of being loved and looked after.

“Some people just need to know they’re seen,” she said. “Whether it’s a blanket made of love or a gerbil solving your horticultural mysteries.”

Maud has since returned to her usual duties at Woolly Hugs HQ, though sources confirm she is considering writing a memoir titled “Small Paws, Big Cases.”

Trevor remains under “close supervision,” though he is reportedly unrepentant.

MAUD: THE GERBIL REDEFINING SUBURBAN STYLE
Inside the wardrobe of Woolly Hugs HQ’s most fashionable resident

By Petunia Blenkinsop, Lifestyle Correspondent

Move aside, Paris. Step back, Milan. The true epicentre of fashion this season is a two‑storey suburban house near the Bluestocking where a gerbil named Maud has quietly become the most influential style icon you’ve never heard of.

Maud, long‑time collaborator and domestic powerhouse at the Woolly Hugs charity headquarters, has amassed a wardrobe so extensive that several volunteers have suggested it should be granted its own postcode. Her collection spans dresses, pinafores, gardening smocks, night‑fishing gear, and a range of hats that would make the late Queen nod in approval.

This week, The Gazette was granted exclusive access to Maud’s wardrobe — and the philosophy behind it.

THE SIGNATURE LOOK: PRACTICAL ELEGANCE

Maud’s everyday attire is a masterclass in balancing style with the realities of gerbil life.

Her go‑to ensemble:

  • A soft cotton dress in a cheerful print
  • Matching shoes (always flat, always sensible)
  • A coordinating hat, often secured with a discreet chin strap “for speed”
  • A tiny apron for domestic duties
  • And, crucially, an outfit she can sprint, climb, or dive into a laundry basket in without incident

“She dresses for the life she leads,” says Knotty, at Woolly Hugs HQ. “Which is to say: unpredictable.”

THE HAT COLLECTION THAT STOPPED TRAFFIC

Maud’s hats deserve their own exhibition.

Highlights include:

  • A wide‑brimmed sunhat for gardening
  • A felt cloche for formal occasions
  • A sequinned beret for evenings when she feels “continental”
  • A waterproof bucket hat for night fishing
  • A tiny fascinator shaped like a teapot (worn only on Battenburg‑related occasions)

Fawley the cat, Maud’s closest companion and occasional saboteur, reportedly tried on the teapot fascinator once but “didn’t like how it sat over her ears.”

THE MOTORCYCLING COLLECTION

When Maud takes her motorbike out — a miniature but fully functional machine of unknown origin — she dresses with full commitment to safety and style.

Her motorcycling wardrobe includes:

  • A leather jacket with reinforced elbows
  • Matching trousers
  • A helmet with a custom visor
  • Gloves with tiny paw‑sized grips
  • A scarf that flutters dramatically in the wind

Fawley, who rides in the sidecar, wears her own leathers and helmet. “Health and safety,” she says, in the tone of someone who has absolutely no intention of following any other rules.

THE DOMESTIC EXCELLENCE RANGE

As a graduate of the Gerbil School of Domestic Excellence, Maud maintains a suite of outfits specifically for household tasks.

These include:

  • A gingham apron for baking
  • A denim pinafore for cleaning
  • A floral housecoat for “light supervisory duties”
  • A pair of tiny rubber gloves she refuses to discuss

Her cleaning attire is so iconic that several Woolly Hugs volunteers have attempted to recreate it in human sizes, with mixed results.

THE ADVENTURE WEAR COLLECTION

Maud’s hobbies are varied and occasionally alarming. Her wardrobe reflects this.

For bird‑watching:

  • Camouflage smock
  • Binocular harness
  • A hat with a discreet seed pocket

For night fishing:

  • Waterproof waders
  • A headlamp
  • A thermos holster

For detective work (see: the geranium incident at No. 29):

  • A trench coat
  • A trilby
  • A notebook labelled “CONFIDENTIAL: DO NOT CHEW”

THE EMOTIONAL HEART OF HER STYLE

Despite the humour and spectacle, Maud’s wardrobe carries a quiet truth: she dresses with intention, with joy, and with the belief that small acts — a good outfit, a tidy kitchen, a photographed granny square — can make someone feel seen.

“She understands that care is a language,” Knotty says. “And she speaks it fluently.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR MAUD?

Rumours suggest she may be launching a capsule collection titled “Practical Glamour for the Busy Gerbil.” When asked, Maud simply adjusted her hat and said:

“I dress for the day I want. And today, I want cake.”

Fawley, sitting beside her, nodded solemnly and added, “Dreamies.”

Sidebar Feature — “Fawley Speaks (Reluctantly)”

As told to our reporter, after three attempts and one stolen biscuit.

“I walk where I please. I pose when I choose. And if Maud’s hat boxes are stacked too neatly, that’s hardly my fault.”

Editor’s note: Fawley ended the interview by sitting on the photographer’s coat and refusing to move.

Photo captions:

Plate 1: “Practical elegance begins with a dress that can withstand both admiration and a sudden sprint.”

Plate 2: “A cat who understands that true style is movement — preferably toward something she intends to steal.”

Plate 3: “Fashion is a conversation. Sometimes it’s a polite one. Sometimes it involves a cat.”

Plate 4: “A life in outfits — and the cat who believes they all belong to her.”

You know how I feel about you, darling @Boiledbeetle ! 💖

That's all wonderful, but as her mother I do feel Maud is getting a bit above herself & it may be almost time for her to leave K&P's for a while & come back to ordinary life.

IoWfairy · 22/04/2026 17:16

Oh, please let her stay for a bit.
As we have previously been informed, “everybody needs a Maud”🎶
And, I ❤️ Maud!

Maud has been busy keeping @KnottyAndPistey stocked up with tea and cake today, but she did find time to do some more square inspections.

Ali's final square was up first.

Maud and Fawley played hide and seek all day. Maud doesn’t think it’s fair when Fawley hides in next door’s garden. It got a bit chaotic until we established ground rules.

Have you checked in Fawley's hiding place and under Maud 's bed. I wouldn't trust them not to hide it if it meant a few more nights at Woolly Hugs HQ.

To be fair to Fawley next door's garden in a cat's world is merely an additional part of her actual garden with no gate to it, therefore Fawleys private part of the garden. So I can see why she'd chose to hide there.
