KnottyAndPistey · 11/04/2026 17:42

Welcome everyone, this is our second thread as we craft a blanket for lovely wafflenose. We are heading into the final stages as last posting is MONDAY 13th APRIL. Just looking at the squares already received, we know our blanket is going to be beautiful inside and out. Crafters and donors have been astonishingly generous in both funds and time,. We are so grateful, thank you everyone.

💐

Our previous thread is here...

Have repeated all the original crafting info as it is always useful to have it all in one place for reference.

We bring such sad news, lovely wafflenose has lost her younger daughter (L) through tragic circumstances and we are just so desperately sorry, thoughts very much with waffle, her family and all who loved her daughter. Really really devastating. Life has been desperately cruel. You may well recognise waffle from music/education/Extra-curricular threads here on MN. Both her lovely daughters have been involved with Mumsnet.

We are so glad waffle would like to receive a Woolly Hug. For those new on here, this is a long standing tradition on Mumsnet where folk come together to make a blanket for one of our own who has been bereaved. There will be love crafted into every stitch. We want it to be a tribute and full of memories. We hope it may give whatever comfort it can.

People have described L as a quiet light, the gentlest of souls. Let us make something truly beautiful in her honour.
So we come again asking for help and shall need both crafters and donors of funds of wool. Can you help us? We would be truly grateful. Thank you

Important crafting info
Squares to be six inches, using 4mm needles or hook. Please knot off VERY carefully when finishing or changing colour and sew your ends in, thank you! No blocking please, makes it much easier to join squares.
Simple or complex, made by beginner or expert, we genuinely welcome them all. It really is the love and thought that counts.

We have some ideas for themes..
Initials please E, G, L and K
She played the recorder, the clarinet and the cello, but focused mainly on the clarinet latterly and played in the National Children's Orchestra Under 10s for a while. Her NCO hoodie was bright blue - a bit like Yarnsmith dark turquoise.
She loved art and reading and was very creative. Loved Harry Potter and would probably have been in Hufflepuff house had she been at Hogwarts.
She had a quirky mind and used to love lego.
She was quite a fashionista. Loved Vogue magazine and Miss Dior perfume
Favourite colours were pink and white (pink more than white).
English literature was the love of her life. We are hoping someone can recreate a bookshelf square? One of her favourite books was Jane Eyre. She had also been studying Plath and Hughes.
She loved swimming and the great outdoors, particular the Quantock Hills. (Photo) We are hoping this may act as an inspiration.
Work/volunteering: she did Brownies and Guides and volunteered as a Rainbow Guider and also volunteered on a hospital ward for a while. She worked as a waitress and at the village pub.
She was interested in philosophy and was planning to become a psychologist/counsellor.
She liked Fleetwood Mac.
She kept tropical fish, hamsters and gerbils and loved all other animals especially cats.
She also liked art and photography.
She was very passionate about being an organ donor - and several people have now received life-saving operations because of her. A truly wonderful young woman.

Lots of ideas and ways to get to know L better. If you can recreate a theme on a square, wonderful, but we also need simple squares, A square in one of her favourite colours is perfect too.

The MAIN Colours. We will be using her favourites,
Pinks from pale baby pink through to magenta.
Cream, but only please Drops Merino Extra Fine - Off White (01) or Yarnsmiths Merino DK Superwash - Off White (3045)
Lighter silvers
Greens pale to mid. Think nature inspired
Then embellishments and accents ONLY please (not whole squares)
Blues - sky to navy inc turquoise.
Sunset shades - red, orange, yellow, gold, but only if creating a sunset!
Browns taupe to mid
Charcoal grey
Black

The Yarn we will be Using for Consistency ….
Yarnsmiths Merino DK Superwash - a BIG sale at Wool Warehouse. Has the widest range of colours
Debbie Bliss Rialto DK only available on Love Crafts
Drops Merino Extra Fine DK.
Katia Merino 100% DK
King Cole Luxury Merino DK

Just from the brands listed please because we know they combine for wash and wear. If you still have any of our wools that have been discontinued or have become less easy to find- Artesano Superwash Merino DK, Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK, Patons Merino Extrafine DK or James C. Brett Pure Merino DK in your stash, please do use them.
Posting will be Teddington, please message if you need the address. If you'd like to include a card for her family , please send with your squares. And please don't forget to include your name!
If you can upload photos of your squares on here as we go along, that will be a lovely record, especially if you have donated yarn.
Will set the last posting date once we are underway but it will be approx 6 weeks hence

Thoughts and love very much with waffle, we are so so sorry. Remembering L

Agree wholeheartedly - it’s been a privilege to be a tiny part of the beautiful whole that Lauren’s blanket will be .
”Love in every stitch” xxx

Llttledrummergirls · 15/04/2026 08:15

@ScruffMuffin I am honoured to have been a part of this. I absolutely agree that this blanket is made with love and Lauren in mind in every stitch.

I am so sorry for your loss.

AlexandraLeaving · 15/04/2026 11:27

It's good to have you here @ScruffMuffin/Waffle. She is remembered. And you are in our hearts. xxx

ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/04/2026 13:40

For Lauren, who sounds so wonderful.

And for @ScruffMuffin , with love.

MyrtleLion · 15/04/2026 14:35

It's been a privilege to take part. I hope our work brings some comfort.

Boiledbeetle · 15/04/2026 16:49

As a non knitter I donated instead so others could knit and crochet.

I've been blown away by the talent of the women on here. Their squares knitted in memory of your daughter are not only stunning but do truly have love in every stitch.

I imagine the finished blanket will be a beautiful tribute to your darling Lauren.

You and Lauren are in my thoughts @ScruffMuffin x

💐 @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius ⭐️ Her trademark flowers. Beautiful knits.

Thank you!

Maud agrees. She loves @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius flowers.

💐 @knittedsloth ⭐️ Beautifully representing the Quantock Hills. Really gorgeous.

Thank you!

Fawley refuses to take her swimming costume version of your squares off @knittedsloth. Maud decided it was too chilly today for swimwear though so is just admiring your squares instead of wearing them.

💐 @ElizaBlack ⭐️ Celebrating pink Lego and its existence in the world, plus more! All just gorgeous.

Thank you!

Maud is very impressed with @ElizaBlack Lego squares, and she sensibly hid the fish one before Fawley came into the room.

I'm not sure what is going on in the fourth image, Maud appears to have gone a bit nuts with the filters!

I think currently Maud has yet to do the rest of @AlexandraLeaving squares and she's not even seen @ifIwerenotanandroid yet, she's going to be Cocker hoop when she lays her eyes on her siblings!

Alas she has used up her Internet allowance for the day!

Boiledbeetle · 15/04/2026 17:13

I have just discovered Maud did manage to squeeze in 2 of @AlexandraLeaving squares in today's allowance.

And an impressive two as well!

I love the way Maud's co-ordinated her outfit with the squares. That's dedication for you!

ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/04/2026 17:30

Don't worry about my squares, Boily, because Maud's littermates have all turned up in person for a family reunion. They're eating K&P out of Battenburg & home. Earlier they nipped out for a formal family portrait, which I asked gemini to show me.

At this point, the AI is just yanking my chain, isn't it? SIX gerbils, all the same age, no parents, 5 females, 1 male. It's not that difficult, surely?

I do wonder whether AI is programmed to act dumb. If it's not then I despair of the people using it and thinking it's accurate in everything it says!

Although doesn't Maurice make seven littermates? I thought Maud had five sisters, so Maurice makes seven?

ETA unless he just got dressed in the same matching frocks as the girls when they were little

ElizaBlack · 15/04/2026 17:37

Boily, it’s either the wonderfulness of your tech skills or the excellence Maud adds to everything she touches, or more probably both, but I have never seen my knitting so flatteringly represented.

May I add Maud’s photos to my knitting project page?

counts on fingers

Maud
Maurice
Magenta
Matilda
Marjorie
Millicent

No, there's 6 altogether. And each with a silent 'g', as Dean Elderberry pointed out many moons ago.

The little boys in frocks thing has been comprehensively dealt with, I thought.

ETA Just checked Thread 1 - it says 6 littermates, though you had a lovely photo of just Maud & Millicaent looking very young.

Whilst Maud does add a certain something the squares are amazing without her!

You certainly can use them. I did notice they were a bit dark (I say daylight and then the AI seems to go by the weather in the UK at the time!) I've tried to brighten them up a bit. How successfully I'm not sure!

I reckon Maurice is the one in the yellow frock.

Dear @ScruffMuffin, thank you for sharing her name with us. I am so sorry for your loss.
It has been such an honour to be part of this woolly tribute to Lauren. I hope it would have given her a sense of appreciation and some amusement. I hope it brings you a crumb of comfort and an occasional smile.
❤️🤗

I reckon Maurice is the one in the yellow frock.

Not number 4? Blue for a boy & all that.

Or pink, if it's more historical.

ETA: Or that might be the 5 girls & their best friend gPhantasmagorical from the 'P' litter. Maurice refused to go to the photographer's studio, & played football instead.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 15/04/2026 18:12

Dear @ScruffMuffin I can’t knit so support from sidelines in a very tiny way. I just wanted to thank you for sharing Lauren’s name, I will light a candle for her tonight. You will be receiving a blanket with so much love in every stitch. I think these threads are the saddest yet also the best of MN (worded that appallingly badly, hope you know what I’m trying to say). Xxx
