Help! I stink!

NCd for this (hence the very appropriate name).

I have come to Singapore for work for a month. And my god is it hot and humid. They said it would be but this is insane. My glasses steam up when I go outside.

Anyway, I am getting so sweaty. I am showering twice a day and using my UK Dove deodorant but I still reckon I stink at the end of the day. I'm really conscious about it at work and wonder what I can do. Is there a particularly hard working deodorant that anyone can recommend? I am also just so sticky all the time. Any tips?
My hotel is so lovely and cold. As are a lot of places here where the Aircon works so beautifully. But out on the street and where there is no Aircon I am just sweating buckets.

Driclor or Odaban which actually stop you sweating, if you manage to get some make sure you follow the instructions properly. You can also use them on your face (upper lip etc) if needed.
Mitchum gel is amazing but make sure you put it on before bed.

I’ve recently discovered that Dove has changed the formulation of its deodorants. The active ingredient has changed from aluminium chlorohydrate to aluminium sesquichlorohydrate, and they’ve changed/added a lot of other stuff.

It’s now ineffective for me too, and also irritates my skin which it didn’t before. It’s also somewhat overpriced, I feel.

So following with interest (and not a little envy, as it’s bloody freezing here!)

Make Waves is very good https://wearemakewaves.com

I used to use Sure Maximum Protection cream but it started to irritate my skin. Make Waves is just as good for me. Driclor and similar really irritated my skin too.

I found make waves awful. I persevered for a good few months but for the first time in my life I actually stank and it has also permanently made my clothes stink despite multiple washes.
I had the antiperspirant version so it should have stopped me sweating but it didn’t at all, and made the sweat smell worse than without anything.

I have returned to my faithful Mitchum roll on.

Yaaaaas someone else has said it DRICLOR! You, have a shower, put it on the night before and have a shower in the morning and then you’re good for a few days. Aerosol deodorants do nothing for me. I use this and natural deodorant co balm, bought from Amazon, bloody brilliant!

Benzoyl peroxide bleaches everything, including bed linen. Avoid it and use something else that won’t ruin the appearance of fabrics.

It won't bleach your bed linen if you've rinsed and dried properly. I've only found that it bleaches towels because that is what you use to dry yourself straight after using. I have dark blue bed sheets and haven't had a problem.

You also don't have to use it every day. Just a couple of times a week.

Hello! ex-Guildford resident Singaporean here and getting a lot of smiles with your post. Two things

  • cotton and linen are your best friends here. Polyester, rayon and satin, pls avoid
  • try and get these two products that almost all locals buy and keep to manage sweat; The Ordinary Glycolic acid toner, works wonders in your armpits when you use cotton pad and dab them under after showers, and Alum Rock salt bars (chinatown sells loads of these), just rub after showers, it kills bacteria and you will smell like nothing, which is what you want. Feel free to write back if you need more help. Welcome to Sg!

Another vote for the ordinary glycolic and a crystal deodorant for neutralising smell.

In south East Asia I also found Coal Tar soap and Sure Strong to be a brilliant combo.

My daughter swears by this, she sweats excessively and has meds for it, this is the one which works for her.

Is it the fact it’s sport strength why you get from Amazon? Sorry if this is a silly question but I get the normal one from Tesco and recently it’s not working as well….maybe this would work. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve had this too!! I hadn’t realised they’d changed the ingredients. I thought they had to say if they’d changed them? So annoying as the cream had been working well for years.

WildDenimDuck · 11/04/2026 21:45

Mitchum stick deodorant… not roll on or spray, apply once dry after a shower with bar soap (not dove bar soap as it’s not technically a soap and doesn’t work same way).
I’m naturally a big sweaty stinker and this is amazing!! 😁
I agree Mitchum products are the most superior of ones I’ve tried, but the stick deodorant is by far the best. Just make sure you’re not already a bit sweaty / use a towel if needed when you apply.

It’s frustrating, isn’t it? I have a lot of allergies and was always sensitive to deodorants. I found I was fine with the Dove original spray version though, and have used it for at least 15 years without a problem.

The new stuff has “Advanced Care” on it, but apart from that the packaging looks very similar until you squint at the ingredients list. I wish companies wouldn’t do this!

Lotsofsnacks · 11/04/2026 22:08

Driclor, and wash smelly armpits with an Antibac handwash, really gets rid of any smells. A nice smelling spray anti perspirant as a final touch. Clean cotton/natural fibre clothes.

So annoying. Although I realised I got mine muddled. I use sure but it’s very simple but they’ve both updated their formula apparently.

going to need to find a new one. Maybe a Mitchum as that seems popular

seasaltjar · 11/04/2026 22:30

The inkey list glycolic stick is great for this, even my son and his friends use this now 😅

And if you don't like it for that reason it has plenty of other uses, makes your legs so smooth, cracked heels etc.

Supersimkin7 · 11/04/2026 22:33

Hibiscrub (pharmacy) for bits & pits kills the bacteria. Add anti-perspirant.

Clothes washed at 60.

Job done.

Bristolandlazy · 11/04/2026 22:37

Daughter had this problem working in hospitality.. She bought a type of washing product that is used before operations and used that, followed by driclor antiperspirant.. That's the best combination she found. Don't use driclor immediately after shaving, you put it on in the evening then wash it off in the morning, she swears by it. Good luck.

Bristolandlazy · 11/04/2026 22:41

Do you have a neck or hand fan, wear natural fabrics. Some fans have a water bottle built in, no clue if they're any good but worth a look maybe. We've got a few of these and they're used a lot in the summer.

Help! I stink!
Talkwhilstyouwalk · 11/04/2026 22:42

Mitchum is good at stopping you swear but it gave me an allergic reaction and boils under my armpits. so I’d say use wipes and reapply your normal deo a few times a days. And don’t worry about it too much….everyone must be the same, we are all human.

VimtoDemon · 11/04/2026 22:44

Secret outlast gel deodorant is what I use in America when it's crazy hot. Also use antibacterial shower gel or soap under your arms and other sweaty areas. If your pits still smell, use hand sanitizer on them for a few mins before showering. The alcohol will kill the smelly bacteria of any stale sweat. Fresh sweat doesn't smell but can refresh any bacteria left and be pongy quickly so thorough is your best bet!

BeebeeBoyle · 11/04/2026 23:06

You won't be smelly if you are washing your body and changing your clothes every day. You just assume you must be because of the sweat.
Sweat doesn't smell for a long time, as long as you don't re-wear your clothes the next day you won't smell bad.

BeebeeBoyle · 11/04/2026 23:10

But potassium alum (pit rock) on the arm pits is the only thing that stops arm pits getting whiffy by the end of the day. It kills the bacteria. You'll still sweat but it won't start to smell late at night.
And drinking lots of water means your sweat is less concentrated so, again, less likely to smell before bedtime.

Interesting, I started using Make Waves about two months ago (anti-perspirant cotton one) after recs on here and I really like it! I was using Wild before and that was OK but not game-changing.

Switch to natural fibre clothes.

Wow thanks everyone. I have just woken up to all these replies.

I will have a look for the various recommended products, and hopefully one will do the trick!

I tried Dove deodorant a couple of years ago. I lasted less than a week. I could smell myself, and this was UK spring time. Never again. I switched back to Sure, and haven’t had a problem since. My daughter uses and recommends Mitchum. I always use a soap bar in the shower in Summer too, otherwise again, I smell my own BO 👃

Sure Maximum Protection Stick deodorants are superb. Trust me.
