Negotiating car from dealer - help!!

Puddleduck2013 · 10/04/2026 16:09

So as a middle aged, post divorce woman I am buying my first car solo.

I have done my research and want a used hybrid Yaris. Seen one with a Toyota dealer, list price £13900 (2023 model) with 50k miles. I have a 2015 Punto to exchange .
After preliminary call dealer has offered £13k including px on my car.

Does this sound reasonable? He went down to £13k without any major pushing on my part after initially saying £13.800. I really don’t know how to negotiate further

It's entirely up to you if you are happy with the price offered?
Your part exchange is worth nothing to them sadly, it will just get taken straight to auction.
Good luck with it, exciting times getting a new to you car :)

Puddleduck2013 · 10/04/2026 16:15

Thank you! I am very excited. I just feel vulnerable and unsure if that’s a sensible price to pay

Check it's been serviced every 10k miles with Toyota to take advantage of the 100k / 10 year warranty (if serviced annually at 10k miles intervals)

That's quite high miles for a 3 year old yaris.

Have you put your car reg in to Webuyanycar? (Top tip - you can put in a fake email address so you don't get loads of messages from them).

That'll give you a rough idea of how much it's worth - although I've heard that they seldom give you the price quoted initially because they find a little stone chip that you didn't mention or something 🙄. Anyway it'd maybe give you a negotiating point with the dealer - or you could even sell it to Webuy if it's substantially more. Good luck!

therockingbird · 10/04/2026 16:23

Was just going to say the same! Very high mileage for a 2023 model way above the 10k per year.. I’d keep looking if I was you!

Namechange568899542 · 10/04/2026 16:24

Are you cash buying or financing the new car?

If cash, have you looked into what you could sell your current car for not part exchange? Idk what it’d be worth but if the new car is listed as £13900 but you could get 3 grand selling your current car privately for example, I’d do that first and just put the money towards the new car (or use like for like examples of your current car model with similar age & mileage you find online a bargaining chip with the current dealer)

Ncforthis2267 · 10/04/2026 16:25

50k on a 3 year old car really isn't that high! 16500k a year is well within the realms of normal.

If your mileage is going to be low it'll 'catch up' with the low milers which will reduce the depreciation when you sell it.

If you intend to do high mileage I'd aim for a lower mileage car to start though.

Do check the servicing has been carried out to schedule though else your warranty is buggered.

clary · 10/04/2026 16:26

So £900 for your 11yo car? Seems low - does it have high mileage? Have you tried selling it with any of the online places?

50k miles is a lot for three years yes. 10k pa is low. Or average. Depends if you are selling or buying haha.

What prices have you found online for a similar Yaris? I love my Aygo btw. We also have a Yaris which is great.

Puddleduck2013 · 10/04/2026 16:21

Oh God, is that high?

Average is 12k miles per annum

reenon · 10/04/2026 16:28

As long as its serviced within the Toyota relax warranty terms the mileage will be fine. So check carefully!

I bought a 3 year old car last year with 46k on the clock. The above average mileage for age meant I got all the modern features I required for significantly less than I would’ve paid for lower mileage, it had full service history. I do an extremely below avg mileage myself (less than 2k a year) so figured it’d even out after a couple years of ownership. So it can be a good choice, but totally depends how much driving you’re then going to do once it’s yours.

WappityWabbit · 10/04/2026 16:33

Definitely a high mileage for a small car! I’d be looking at under 10k miles annually so 25-30k absolute max., although if it’s got a very good spec and you generally drive less than 9k a year, then it could be worth considering.

Carry on looking (online too) and see what other vehicles might meet your requirements before agreeing to buy this one.

Also, if you find a potentially great vehicle at a Toyota dealership further away, they might be prepared to drive it to your local dealership.

Walk away for now and say you’ll think about it and wait for them to call you with a better offer.

You can do this!

I’ve been buying my own cars since I was 18 and I’m in my 60’s now. Weirdly, none of my partners were much into cars or technology so it was always down to me to sort things out. 😁

Pollpoll · 10/04/2026 16:33

The days of getting a discount for cash are gone. Car dealers make money by selling finance and they push it hard. Once you agree the sale they will also start pushing extras to which I always say no.
I'm afraid I've never had the courage to sell or buy privately though people who know about cars save money that way.
I don't know what your normal mileage is but mine is about 7000 a year maximum and I would not buy a three year old car with 50k on the clock. But I am no car expert so am cautious.

Ilikewinter · 10/04/2026 16:36

As others have said. Put your car into we buy any car to get an idea of price. Regardless, 50k on a 3 year old small car is incredibly high. I would expect that kinda of mileage on a reps type car - not a Yaris! I would keep looking. What else is there in autotrader in comparison?

ChaliceinWonderland · 10/04/2026 16:38

I'm same as you, last month sold my car with webuyanycar for 1.5k and bought secondhand mini for 11 k from a dealer, you are much better off selling old car for cash , we buy any car we're brilliant ... it took 20 mins and cash was in my account in 15 mins!!

Look around dealers and do yourhomework on warranties. Im 55 divorced, did it all by myself, like you.

Likely an ex hire car which is why the mileage is high. They always get rid at 3 years old.

Puddleduck2013 · 10/04/2026 16:41

It’s had one owner but yes assume it could be rep or hire car

Seeingadistance · 10/04/2026 16:44

Buying towards the end of the month gives you the best chance of negotiating the price down as they want to get it into their end of month sales targets.

Also, if you're funding all or part of the purchase in cash - look at getting a zero interest credit card to pay for it, and put the cash into a high interest account.

Glittertwins · 10/04/2026 16:49

Puddleduck2013 · 10/04/2026 16:21

Oh God, is that high?

Yes, we got a 10yr old Toyota with just under 50k miles.
The average mileage for a Yaris would be 8-10k a year so that car is nearly double. What’s the service history?

clary · 10/04/2026 16:49

Just to say - yes 50k in three years is high mileage, but yes, that’s not high mileage overall if yours is low, as a pp says.

I don’t think it’s incredibly high tho. I do about 20k a year which I appreciate is high (luckily the Aygo was v low when bought) but that’s just my 25 mile each way commute (not that unusual) plus a number of hobbies that see me driving quite a long way at the weekend (theatre trips to London, sports officiating in various locations). So 16k a year is believable and not necessarily a deal breaker.

needapokerface · 10/04/2026 16:55

You have been given some good advice, about using we buy any car to get a base price for your car.

The general rule when I worked in the Motor Industry was 12k miles per year was average, so I would expect a 23 model to have about 36k on it.

I would also check on autotrader using the car you want to buy and see if any other dealerships are offering same car for lower etc that should give you a bit of bargaining power. Once you have a base price then you can go to the dealership and speak to the sales team, its easier face to face than on the phone.

Test drive the car, check the tyres, service history, mot etc and make sure the service history and mot are either done before you buy or have just been done in the last month. Anything you are not sure about ask, if the tyres look worn in ask for new ones. If you don't ask you won't get.

On my last car purchase I asked for 2 new front tyres, machine polished valet, and because the sales guy had a sense of humour a full tank of fuel. What I got was 4 new tyres, full valet with machine polish, 1/2 tank of fuel and a small bunch of flowers 😃I wasn't forward or pushy just a wee bit cheeky and got away with it.

I am and have always been called the negotiator when it comes to friends and family getting new cars (always used) but new to them.

Hope you manage to find what you want and happy motoring 😁

Gleanzer · 10/04/2026 17:52

I have never px'd a car so I have no idea, but we find Motorway gave better prices than We buy any car and is pretty easy to use, whether just to get a price or as a genuine alternative to px.

As long as the price reflects the mileage it doesn’t matter. You can get yourself a better car than you could otherwise afford if you’re not scared of mileage.
