Negotiating car from dealer - help!!

So as a middle aged, post divorce woman I am buying my first car solo.

I have done my research and want a used hybrid Yaris. Seen one with a Toyota dealer, list price £13900 (2023 model) with 50k miles. I have a 2015 Punto to exchange .
After preliminary call dealer has offered £13k including px on my car.

Does this sound reasonable? He went down to £13k without any major pushing on my part after initially saying £13.800. I really don’t know how to negotiate further

So I have found another Yaris. Less miles and better spec.
was £13900, got it to £13500, free delivery (200 miles) and a full tank.

paying cash and I’ll sell my car privately.
A petrolhead friend has spoken to dealer and viewed the car thoroughly online/video (also 14 day return policy) - he is satisfied it’s a good car.

Will do the deal today - are there are cheeky extras I can get them to throw in? MOT due September.

No harm in asking, they can only say no! Would they not px your car?, save you the hassle of selling it privatley?

You have to be bold! - not to say cheeky. They always have leeway to allow for cheeky offers ... they need your money!

I once set out to buy a new VW Polo. I looked online and found one at a good price but at a distance. Went to my local dealers and showed it to them and said I would buy from them if they would match it... I showed them the deal. They blagged a bit but I stood firm ... I got the deal and save a grand!

Also be aware that they treat women differently. I once went in to look at a car and was checking out various things and the dealer said would I like to have my husband come and look at it ...... enter withering look from me!

And on another occasion I set out on a test drive, with the dealer driving ( I had injured foot) and I directed him to drive to the workshop of another local dealer where I messaged my son in law to come and look at it ... he runs the workshop there!

There is always room for negotiation and they will move a long way to get your custom! You just have to refuse to be intimidated.

I avoid dealing with dealers by selling through We Buy Any Car, who I have always found to be very fair, and buying through CarWow or Drive the Deal.

Does that mean you are buying a car unseen? Interested as lots of auto trader are not local and I haven't considered them.

Good second hand cars are very desirable now. Prices are really holding.

i bought one a few months ago for ds and absolutely could not get them to budge. Even the usual, throw in a service, 6 months tax, years warranty type of “extras” you used to be able to negotiate weren’t flying.

it was a great car though and exactly what he wanted, and the price was fair compared to other dealers.

so I think your only realistic option is to get the best price you can for your car.

Yes, but they always have warranties and I don't know what I'm looking at to find any problems anyway.

I'm on my 6th car purchased this way, and have always had excellent service and no problems (touch wood).

I judt bought a car, virtually alone. It is high mileage. Look for similar cars with lower mileage. Go on price comparison sites. Most dealers will match a good deal you find. I just negotiated a deal. Ended up with a pre reg small car for a little more than I was going to pay for a 74 plate.

Are you cash buying or financing the new car?

If cash, have you looked into what you could sell your current car for not part exchange? Idk what it’d be worth but if the new car is listed as £13900 but you could get 3 grand selling your current car privately for example, I’d do that first and just put the money towards the new car (or use like for like examples of your current car model with similar age & mileage you find online a bargaining chip with the current dealer)

You won't get much for a 2015 Punto via a dealer giving you part exchange. He has effectively offered £900 if you ar paying £13k for the Yaris.
I would see if he comes back to you, or try to sell your Punto privately

So glad you are going to look more as the first one isn’t a good deal. Have you looked on Toyotas website for used cars and compared mileage/spec and price?

Also you can but from a retailer from thr usual used car websites such as autotrader so it isn’t just private sales.

negotiation on a used car is pretty small but I would do full research and ‘safer’ to buy from a retailer. Good luck.
