Does hot chocolate before bed help anyone else sleep better?

I am convinced I sleep better after having a hot chocolate before bed. I don't think there's any science behind it.... Anyone wanna prove me right? 😁😁😀

Anecdata will be perfectly acceptable in this case.

I got myself a velvetiser after much deliberation and an enjoying my better sleep since, as making hot chocolate had become easier than before ( I was a saucepan of milk, cocoa and sugar person before)

I know that if I go to bed a bit hungry I end up waking in the night and not being able to get back to sleep as my bloody sugar dips too low...but if I have a hot chocolate (or something similar) I definitely sleep better and longer :) x

Caffeine makes my ADHD self sleepy, so cocoa before bed is all good, and since peri I’m up every night to wee several times anyway! Will look into the velvetiser though, I’d assumed it was marketing guff but maybe not?

I couldn't sleep at all if I had hot chocolate because I would know the oxalates content would be wrecking my joints and tissues.

People are largely unaware of the damage they are doing when they ingest high oxalate stuff like cocoa, spinach, sweet potato etc. It is ruinous to your health.

Is this true? I eat spinach at least 3 times a week!
Are oxalates worse that alcohol, seed oils, caffeine and trans fats?
my joints are indeed buggered. I cannot tell a lie: I thought it was the fatness (osteo) the auto immune disease (rheumatoid) and the gout (uric acid crystals: no more prawns for me!). Was it the green veg all along? Bugger!

No.

Ignore her.

Unless you're consuming a lot of it AND there's a history of kidney stones in your family... You'll be fine.

Just to confuse things......lol...,..I saw a private functional doctor (also qualified GP) for my worsening and decades long chronic fatigue....turns out I was B12 deficient along with being gluten intolerant (not coeliac but sensitive to gluten). The doctor suggested I come off gluten for a month and then to eat some. OMG - I couldn't believe how much improved my (also buggered) joints felt after coming off gluten (prior to that I presumed my stiffness and pain was related to my age, weight)....and similarly I couldn't believe how stiff and inflamed my joints felt within minutes of eating some gluten. I never made the connection before. So I would suggest you try not eating gluten for a couple of weeks and then indulge in a large baguette 😄 and see what you think.........worth a try x

I do most nights. Warm milk, collagen powder, a little bit of organic cocoa powder, a tiny bit or horlicks.

It's a wonder I'm not in an oxalate-induced coma by now.

@ThePollutedShadesOfPemberley
We have lost the ability to detect antinutrients in our food.

I think some of us have lost the ability to detect the bullshit in theories people want to sell you.

How do you (and she) explain the hundreds of millions of people walking around with perfectly fine joints and highly functional kidneys who have spent lifetimes consuming foods with oxalates?

tiredmummasita · 12/04/2026 22:36

I’d be more awake.
i take magnesium glycinate before bed.

also I read that having chocolate cravings is linked to magnesium deficiency not sure of the truth in that but magnesium helps me sleep.

maybe it’s the fat in chocolate that keeps you satiated .. yum 😋

Moon30 · 12/04/2026 23:40

Hot chocolate, no it keeps me awake, kinda gives me heart palpitations 🤷‍♀️

Horlicks helps though

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/04/2026 23:46

I hate milk now and couldn’t drink hot chocolate, but as a teen/young adult living at home my dad and I always had it before bedtime. I
wonder if some of it was the routine/ritual for me as I have quite a set bedtime routine now.

BeBesideTheSea · 13/04/2026 00:00

Chai latte for me - the instant powder in hot milk.
