Does hot chocolate before bed help anyone else sleep better?

tnorfotkcab · 09/04/2026 21:36

I am convinced I sleep better after having a hot chocolate before bed. I don't think there's any science behind it.... Anyone wanna prove me right? 😁😁😀

Anecdata will be perfectly acceptable in this case.

I got myself a velvetiser after much deliberation and an enjoying my better sleep since, as making hot chocolate had become easier than before ( I was a saucepan of milk, cocoa and sugar person before)

Nonsense. If you have a tendency to kidney stones you should moderate your oxalate intake or take other measures to bind it in the gut, but otherwise, healthy people have no need to be concerned about them. There’s no good scientific evidence for these foods ‘wrecking your body’. Don’t spread misinformation.

You can't help some people.

Totally agree. Annoys me when people call spinach a superfood when it’s one of the worst you can eat for your body

You're right. I stick to lard and crack cocaine.

That’s very rude to the poster who was correct. Oxalates are not something to be worried about unless you have kidney stones and if you ensure you consume calcium can be benefitical. I think maybe you’ve misunderstood.

There is no mechanism to 'bind' it in the gut. The effects of primary oxalosis is really really bad and people often don't know they have it until it's destroyed their kidneys. If that poster doesn't believe me, that's OK but to make shizz up to justify her wrong position is a bit much.

My adult DS loves a hot chocolate before bed; he swears it makes him sleepy.

MJFEB2026 · 10/04/2026 14:31

I’d be weeing all night 🙈

Highonmyownsupply · 10/04/2026 14:40

I think it’s the carbs. I read recently that we all tend to wake out of deep sleep at some point in the night because our blood sugar falls. Maybe the chocolate milk prevents that? I’m going to try it!

LEDantlers · 10/04/2026 14:42

I haven't slept for four nights. I'll try this tonight. I had magnesium before bed last night which didn't help either 😭

Greybeardy · 10/04/2026 15:00

postprandial somnolence is a normal, largely parasympathetically mediated response to high fat/carb meals. Hope you have time to brush your teeth before you fall asleep.

greymalkin71 · 12/04/2026 08:11

Yes I find it helps. I also find a bowl of cheerios with milk before bed helps, or eating anything really. Conflicts wildly with the not eating to close to bed advice but noticeably helps me to sleep better. I sleep terribly so do do the eating thing when it gets bad.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 12/04/2026 08:26

Filling my bladder with anything at bedtime wouldn’t work for me.

400rider · 12/04/2026 10:07

My husband’s top beverage when we come in from a motorbike ride.
He often drinks it before bed, last night good example, so joined him on this occasion.

You have highlighted this must be the nights I don’t sleep and he gets out of bed more frequently than usual for that middle of the night pee.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 12/04/2026 10:52

No. It doesn’t work for me. I just need a wee about 4am.

Greentrilby · 12/04/2026 11:51

I’m going to try this as I’m a terrible sleeper. Any advice re machines or is the HC velvetiser really the bees knees?

It does the job nicely, and looks pretty. But I am fairly sure a milk frother from an alternative brand would would do the job just as well.

Research it. Watch a vid by Sally K Norton and you will dump that velvetiser. Cocoa products are full of oxalate that forms crystals in your body. We used to have a gut bacteria that could break it down but one dose of antibiotics as a kid and that's gone!

Once I recognised the issue, I decided to dump my stored oxalate as I was in constant bodily pain. It took me 18 months start to finish and it was bloody brutal. It came out of every orifice and made a few of it's own but I am two years on from all that now and no pain. No more constant UTIs either.

We have lost the ability to detect antinutrients in our food.

I did... And if you have it with dairy... such as milk it's fine.
If you cook the spinach, it's fine...

No-one is killing themselves eating a bit of spinach and having a hot chocolate..

Show us the evidence that eating some spinach in a curry for example, or having a hot chocolate made with a teaspoon of cocoa, mil and some sugar is hugely detrimental to our health.

Primary oxalosis is a rare and inherited disorder, of you and your family don't have a history of kidney stones etc ... I'm not sure what's dangerous about a hor chocolate...

I'll wait....

I can drink a strong cup of tea before bed and still sleep like a log!!

begonefoulclutter · 12/04/2026 14:14

I am a serious chocoholic, but have never been fussed about hot chocolate for some reason. However... I do find that a Horlicks before bed helps me sleep well.

If you have calcium with your chocolate (in milk) then you’re fine unless you have a kidney issue, in which case you should be moderate in your consumption. I haven’t made anything up.

Don’t you think that if there was scientific evidence to support your extreme view that the NHS would be telling us all to stop eating those foods, and that spinach would be banned instead of called a superfood? Come off it. If you’ve scientifically proven that millions of people are ill from consuming very common and safe foodstuffs, have you published it in peer-reviewed scientific journals? You should be up for a Nobel prize at the least.

She'll be the same as anti-vaxxers who have "done their research" but oddly can't provide any actual evidence apart from one video from one person... And even then she did the classic "go and find it yourself" approach... because it's so easy...

I couldn't sleep at all if I had hot chocolate because I would know the oxalates content would be wrecking my joints and tissues.

People are largely unaware of the damage they are doing when they ingest high oxalate stuff like cocoa, spinach, sweet potato etc. It is ruinous to your health.

Pissing myself laughing at the thought of you lying awake, distraught having eaten a bit of sweet potato, Pemberley 😂

JenniferJupiterr · 12/04/2026 16:00

God, these weirdos walk among us don’t they? <hard stare at @ThePollutedShadesOfPemberley>

Horlicks before bed and a magnesium gummy really helps me drift off and have a good night's sleep.
