Why are we not being encouraged to take in Iranian refugees?

Pretty much as soon as the Ukraine war started we were encouraged by the government to take Ukrainian refugees into our homes. Why has this not been mentioned in regard to the war on Iran?

It makes much more sense for people to go to neighbouring and allied countries than to random places all over the world. It’s not a radical or racist idea that you should help your neighbours first.

That’s what happens. Despite what far right propogandists claim most refugees go to neighbouring (safe) countries.

Ukraine is a European country, why wouldn’t European refugees be prioritised in Europe?
Have you explained to people in the Middle East how racist and ignorant they are for not making an effort to take in Ukrainian refugees?

Its also common sense that people who are experiencing the trauma of being displaced from their homes would be better off being housed in neighbouring countries with at least some cultural/language similarity, as opposed to crossing continents and facing a huge culture shock.

And you know what, it’s actually also ok for European countries to make that decision regardless of all that. European people are people too, we don’t deserve to be labelled negatively every time we do something you don’t like. Leave people alone.

“Its also common sense that people who are experiencing the trauma of being displaced from their homes would be better off being housed in neighbouring countries with at least some cultural/language similarity, as opposed to crossing continents and facing a huge culture shock.”

I don’t share language or cultural similarities with Ukranians.

Because they’re mostly brown and Muslim

Literally this. Ukrainians are white Europeans and largely Christian so seen as culturally closer to Brits than brown Muslims from an Asian country. Deny away but I’m 100% sure this is why.

Having said that, stats show Brits are moving away from the intense support for Ukraine. Some stats show Reform voters are more likely to side with Putin. I think there’s been a real rise in Russian propaganda and conspiracy theories.

RosaMundi27 · 07/04/2026 17:03

Iranians are not fleeing their home atm. And the whole country is locked down by the insane Islamist terrorists who run the show.

Iran hasn’t been evacuated so how can it be “that”?!

Nonsense their neighbours won't take them in! Many gulf States don't even acknowledge refugee status. They are concerned about political instabilities. Yet it's OK for us to take people in who have a totally different and sometimes dangerous mindsets. By the way we have already taken thousands from Iran before this war started, they are number 2 on the list.

Top 10 UK refugees, (we are certainly not the nearest and safest country) :

1Albania
2Iran
3Afghanistan
4 Iraq
5 Syria
6 Pakistan
7 Bangladesh
8 Eritrea
9 Sudan
10 Yemen

But we can’t be asked to support Palestinian refugees from Gaza - they haven’t been able to leave the country for a very long time.

We weren’t an ally of Ukraine until the day they were invaded. Taking in Iranian citizens would make more sense due to our historical ties to the country.

Yes, UK wasn't an ally of Ukraine. UK was one of guarantors of Ukraine's safety based on Budapest memorandum.

It means the UK, France and US signed a promise of protection for Ukraine...

When you can't take everyone, would it be wrong to accept primarily refugees from the same region and similar culture?

I only ever heard Ukraine being described as “the most corrupt country in Europe”, never as an ally.

You were listening to the wrong people then, weren't you? Check your history.

Iran takes in more refugees itself than any other country.

would be nice of you to provide details.

I haven't seen a single evidence of crimes/rapes/assaults committed by Ukrainian refugees.

I worked with a couple of them - this community was very keen on ensuring they don't cause any issues and are seen as loyal and hard workers so not to lose public support

I dont believe I mentioned crimes, rapes assaults so why have you mentioned them?

I clearly said I recall reading about people not being able to get rid of them, not just on here, on other forums too.

No I cant remember the details, I already said that

Its like you replied to a completely different post

It was reported and widely accepted that the Ukraine was very corrupt and full of neo nazis before the war kicked off. Now they are the hero's. Propaganda it's always there, depends who's side your on. Much like the left who call anyone racist and nazi if anyone dares to question who is coming into our country and how it's going to be funded. Propaganda to get people to shut up and stop asking questions, only it doesn't work anymore. People have woken up to it.

So where do you propose to house these hypothetical refugees? All the council housing is full, there are no more under occupied three or four star hotels, private rentals are scarcer than hen’s teeth….tents are right out.

we are full……

Why would I

I made a simple comment about why some people may not wish to take refugees in, because I recall reading about non success stories thats all

It would be weird to say 'oh people dont really want to take refugees in because,,, well it was very successful last time'

I’m still not sure why the Govt fell over itself to specifically welcome the Ukrainians tbh. All while people were kicking off about the small boats.

Particularly as many go back and forth to Ukraine visiting relatives now.

Was it a temp measure or are they granted indefinite leave to remain?

Pollpoll · 07/04/2026 18:44

We have a long history of taking refugees from Ukraine. In the late 1940s and early 50s thousands came to the UK and settled here. There were several second generation Ukrainian children at my school in the 1960s.

I just don’t get why they were handed school places, free rail travel, people were sponsored to take them in when it’s not seemed to be the case for other Nationalities.

I don’t particularly care but I’m curious

I don’t really understand why people compare them To the citizens of other wars tbh.

ukraines government organised the evacuation of citizens- forget this- they go back and forth and get free train travel rubbish, one day they woke up and the government put them on a train to Poland to flee. This is an established part of war, when invaded, that citizens should be evacuated.

of course, Poland hungry etc couldn’t take everyone so other nations stepped in to ease the strain- the uk less than many, since its further away.

this is in no way comparable to Gaza or Iran whose governments have not evacuated its citizens, usually because they want human shields.
