Is there a time limit to report someone to the police for purposely shoving you hard in the shoulder, and is that actually a crime ?

It happned at a party 7 years ago now and the person that did it was also a party guest

he is some sort of police commissioner. Or high up in the police
and it worries me someone abusive is in such a position
but also guess he’s well protected

i mean is this even a crime
He fully put his hand hard onto my shoulder and shoved me hard
more like a hit than a shove

no the ribbons are on the chest

the shoulder things I think rank as inspector

it was more of a hit that a shove
hard and fast
and put and almost knocked me back
I guess even that shows he probably knows how to hit someone in a way that can make it seem less
it was worse that a slap
it was so hard an fast

You could log it as it's unlikely to be the only time he's assaulted someone and it could help build up a picture. He sounds like a thoroughly unpleasant person. If he's happy to assault a stranger with so little provocative he's probably doing worse behind closed doors.

No it doesn't but its worrying someone who behaves like that is in a position of authority and high up in the police. But it's too late to do anything about it now.

Thanks for explaining why it’s bothering me better than I can

appreciate that 💐

I know he won’t get done for it

but he must be capable of bad things esp in a position of power
to do that to me for no reason
as an equal at a party

dread to think he he behaves where he’s in a position of power against someone below him in status

Thank you 💐thanks for the understanding
that’s what I guess been worrying me

Have you sought counselling?

inspector is only middle rank. Not really “high up”

not that it makes much difference.

do you know his name? Which area? As you seem really vague on the details.

20thCenturyFecks · 07/04/2026 12:30

Sounds like you want to try and scupper this person's career.

So he shoved you 7 years ago. He shoved you, he didn't hurt you. Noone ever said policemen had to be nice people.

mugglewump · 07/04/2026 12:32

It was at a party. Perhaps alcohol played a part? Perhaps he lost his balance a bit, or at least was in high spirits and unaware of his strength? Did he say anything that might substantiate that the shove was done with any malice? I think you need to move on.

sesquipedalian · 07/04/2026 12:32

So in the moment, he shoves you out of the way to take a photo (rude, but I assume there were other people there who saw what happened) and now, seven years after the event, you are thinking about reporting him to the police? And you’re still fretting about it seven years on? Give it up, OP, both for your sanity and the fact that in the vanishingly unlikely event you could get anyone to take a scintilla of notice, it would simply mean more grief for you. I take it you’ve never been to court - it’s to be avoided if at all possible, not just for the eye-watering expense, but also for the toll it would take on you personally.

Badballerina · 07/04/2026 12:39

oh do go ahead and waste police time in the administration of deciding nothing can be done about this ridiculously after the event complaint. Are you a tax payer - as one I say catch yourself on and move on ( if this is genuine which I doubt)

BarMonaco · 07/04/2026 12:40

Ignore the assault apologists OP

Lilifer · 07/04/2026 12:40

.

KilkennyCats · 07/04/2026 12:42

If you were asked why you waited seven years to say anything, op, how would you explain it?

KilkennyCats · 07/04/2026 12:45

The police are not building up pictures of people shoving other people at parties which are only reported seven years later.

tigger1001 · 07/04/2026 12:48

Did it leave a mark? Do you have evidence of any injury?

I think you need to look at why this is still bothering you after 7 years.

Suppose as well if he’s high up he will get protected
on his uniform he wears a yellow and red ribbon,
then a burgundy one with two white strips
then a blue one with two white stripes

no idea what the ribbons mean but I guess that must mean something
some sort of award I guess

guess it’s maybe worrying me as I think someone like that could be upto all sorts and maybe I should have reported it at the time but I was genuinely upset

saying shove makes it sounds less worse than it was
it was really hard and fast like a hit

Yes but even if he'd knocked you to the ground he could claim it was an accident.

The same as anyone could so it has nothing to do with his job etc.

This, was he in uniform at the time? If not how do you know so much about what he wears and does?
do you actually know him?

Okay so there is clearly something else going on as you describe him being able to hit so it looks less serious.

Also if it happened 7 years ago, you seem to recall every detail so either it was serious at the time or it wasn’t and your mind has blown it up.

Not sure what the police can do but they aren’t likely to be able to do much. Was he drunk? Were you?

Are you in a bad place mentally right now? If so taking it further is unlikely to make you feel any easier as they won’t take you seriously which will make you feel worse

Highlighta · 07/04/2026 13:19

Has something happened to trigger this now OP?

It seems a very random thing to want to report after all this time.

BillieWiper · 07/04/2026 13:20

UpDownAllAround1 · 07/04/2026 12:21

Thought 6 years was usual statute of limitations to bring a case

Yeah this is true. I did think of reporting something from over a decade ago but realised there's little point sadly. It was a bit more than a shove at a party though.

GreenWheat · 07/04/2026 13:21

Just forget it and focus on your life now. It's far too long ago for anyone to remember or care.

Claudiasfringebenefits · 07/04/2026 13:25

I think it is too late now.

It is ok to wish you had done something around the time but I'd just be trying to remember that by being hit, you didn't do anything wrong and by not reporting you also haven't done anything wrong.
