Help me find somewhere to sit in my cold garden.

I am looking for a clever idea and Google is sending me in circles so I thought I would ask here.

I want somewhere to sit outside and read my book when it is chilly/wet.

I have looked at tents and sheds, I can't afford a conservatory.

It just needs to hold a deck chair with room for me to get in and be waterproof so I can leave the chair outside.

If anyone can help I would be eternally grateful.

A garden pod, no idea of cost though

fiorentina · 05/04/2026 20:33

A garden pod? Or a summerhouse. If you don’t want four sides then a covered arbor?

During Covid those Perspex igloos were popular in pub gardens, a small one of those?!

What's your budget? What about this sort of thing?

Tents are shit in the rain. You don’t actually get wet (unless you are touching the sides) but it isn’t a pleasant experience.

i am exploring the same ideas.

3beesinmybonnet · 05/04/2026 20:39

How about a greenhouse? Either a proper glass one, or a plastic one like a
see-through tent

PottingBench · 05/04/2026 20:45

Have you rejected the idea of a shed?

I have a she shed in a 7-x-5-overlap-pent-shed that cost me about £500 fully installed. It has an opening window and a stable door. I've put an armchair and little table in there and have a storm lantern, candles and bunting. I listen to the radio, read, knit and watch the birds come and go to the feeders.

Dox9 · 05/04/2026 20:47

Try googling potting shed. Lots of light and could be lovely.

Shedmistress · 05/04/2026 21:01

What is your budget?

And how often do you plan to go out and read in the garden?

LockdownGardener · 05/04/2026 21:28

Oh my, I wasn't expecting so many responses.

The arbour looks amazing, and also like the tent for right now.

Off to Google potting shed.

Budget around £1,000 but could increase a bit, but that or less would be amazing.

If it was dry I think I would use it every day, there would be a possibility of having electric so I could use a heated blanket. Our house is small and I am craving some space.

A second hand greenhouse? Or a diy one made from plastic bottles?

I've googled that, it sounds lovely, do you find it dark? My house is dark and that is another thing I am keen to escape.

@Pinkginwithice DIY with bottles??

I second greenhouse, often available used for free. You could surround yourself with flowers or tomatoes

Diversion · 05/04/2026 21:37

We have a wood shed for logs, we partitioned it off so that there is space for my chair. I take my first mug of tea of the day in there each morning at 5.30am and also at the weekend (not at 5.30). I have a nice view of the garden and can hear the birds singing and always keep the door open even when it is raining. It is an important, quiet start to my day.

DuracellbunnyAPlus · 05/04/2026 21:38

I have a shed, with a double glass door on the front. Came with the house, but I put in electricity and I have an old armchair there. I sit there every day.

In my old house, I had a greenhouse, with a deckchair. Lots of plants and got loads of sun.

No it's nice and bright. It has two windows on one of the longest sides and that faces west so it gets the afternoon and evening sun.

I'd thought of a greenhouse but worried it would be too bright and hot on sunny days.

DuracellbunnyAPlus · 06/04/2026 07:47

Was just thinking about you, op, as I'm sitting in my shed with a cup of tea, listening to the bird song. I spend more time in my shed, than un the house!

BewareoftheLambs · 06/04/2026 07:49

My grandma used to have one of those big comfy swing seats, it came with a shade and a waterproof cover. If it rained in the summer we would put the cover over the top and tie it to three sides, then I would sit there reading while it rained around me. I loved it, it's one of my favourite memories.

WinterFrogs · 06/04/2026 07:54

I love this thread! I sit and read or just sit and gaze at my surroundings on my shady patio in the summer, but I love all these ideas. Thank you for starting the thread @LockdownGardener and everyone for their ideas

I lived in a small house with an unsuitable partner in lockdown so I made myself an outside shelter. I got a small outdoor settee and a temporary marquee like you'd have over a bbq. But I put it into a corner and lashed it very tightly with cable ties to the fence so it was very solid. Then I bought sailcloth and put a stronger top on it. Eventually I added sailclorh to the side so it looked like a corner yurt really and I put fairylights in. With my duvet out there on cold but dry days it was awesome!
