Does anyone else do this? Or know of anyone who does?

My son’s lovely girlfriend puts glasses on the top rack of the dishwasher lying down! I’ve never seen it done like that.

And no, I’m not complaining and I haven’t, and won’t say anything - I love that she wants to help out. I’m just curious!

I don't do that, and I've never seen it done.

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 04/04/2026 14:02

No not heard of that before. Can’t see how the inside of the glasses would get cleaned properly either

ILoveDaffodills · 04/04/2026 14:05

No never seen that. No way would they get clean!

just put them in properly & say you do it that way 'as you fit more in' tactful & nit a lie,

actually why didn't your son do that?

Lizzbear · 04/04/2026 14:06

I have done it! But I’m strange anyway 😄

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/04/2026 14:12

Nowhere else to put them in my dishwasher. Glasses, mugs and small bowls on top, everything else crammed in the bottom.

Snorlaxo · 04/04/2026 14:13

I’d be concerned about coating like anti-glare being damaged.

I think she means wine glasses not specs.

Oh this has made me giggle!

getthewetdogoffthesofa · 04/04/2026 14:18

Surely if you lie them sideways, the dirty water gets trapped in them. That happened to my glasses when they accidentally fall over during the cycle.

begonefoulclutter · 04/04/2026 14:48

Dishwashers can give glassware a cloudy sheen after a lot of washes, so I'd wash them by hand.

Ferryl · 04/04/2026 15:30

I did mean drinking glasses, yes!

I guess she’s always done it that way but it doesn’t make sense to me - as you say, the glasses would fill up with dirty water.

All my dc do it the way I do.

Oh also I’ve just remembered she puts cutlery in the opposite way to us too. I put sharp knives pointing downwards, everything else pointing up.

What do other folks do?

Pointing down. The spray for the bottom rack is underneath so easier to clean when downwards.

worldsgonemadnow · 04/04/2026 15:38

Sharp knives pointing downwards, always. A woman from my hometown died when she tripped and fell on a knife that was in the dishwasher

DinoLil · 04/04/2026 15:40

NO ONE is allowed to put anything in my dishwasher. I have a system 😁

gottakeeponmoving · 04/04/2026 15:42

I would think that she doesn’t know how to fill a dishwasher.

Or like my DH - does know but a) thinks her way is better b) does it wrong on purpose.

As for knives. Common sense and safety says put big sharp ones facing down and the everyday cutlery knives facing up.

Edited

I'm not a fun sponge but what kind of idiot does the wrong things on purpose? Especially if it makes extra work which I'm guessing ends up with you

Notmyreality · 04/04/2026 15:51

Illogical and won’t clean properly.

As for knives I have a top cutlery drawer so they go in there horizontal. Wouldn’t have a dishwasher without one.

LoppyDoppySoppy · 04/04/2026 15:53

Ohhh wait a second

My DH is very heavy handed with the dishwasher to mugs and glasses we put in the top rack throughout the day would fall over when he yanks it open to add something else. Maybe she’s just doing it until it’s time to set off the dishwasher?

Oh, God. I was thinking about the old public information films when I was on an escalator the other day. That feels like it could be part of a new updated series.

Is that the incident where the husband was suspected of stabbing her?

Pineapplewaves · 04/04/2026 16:02

No - she’s either not been shown how to stack a dishwasher or she puts it on half empty and does that to fill up the space?

Ferryl · 04/04/2026 16:10

I don’t think she’d be doing it wrong on purpose, it must just be the way she does it at home. I get the impression that she’s the one at home who does the majority of cooking and cleaning for her siblings. It’s no big deal really, I was just curious and suddenly thought “oh maybe it’s me doing it wrong!”

Re someone tripping and stabbing herself on a knife, I remember hearing a story years ago of a child who ran into a room, tripped, fell on some knitting needles and died :(.

Or perhaps she’s never had a dishwasher and grew up in a house without a dishwasher… believe it or not MN, it could happen… 🙄
