Jamie Lang is there to try to appeal to a younger audience however it’s not working on DC at home with us.

Is that why you think they had him? I thought it was deeply bizarre. As far as I know he has no connection to rowing, and in an afternoon where they had the Youth Boat Race to try to broaden access to rowing get children from state schools that don’t usually row involved, having someone whose main claim to fame is being ‘posh’ as well as witless seemed like a mixed message.

Crwysmam · 04/04/2026 16:12

Ex-rower so always watch. A friend of mine rowed for Cambridge in the 80s he made the blues boat 3 times. Also, more recently, one of the lads in the year above DS at school has made the blues boat twice and this year is in the reserve boat.
The rowing club I rowed for has always had a strong association with Cambridge so we traditionally support the light blues.
Having rowed and coxed the course, albeit the opposite way round, it is not easy.
When you watch the race it’s often difficult to appreciate just how much work goes into the training needed to reach the standard you can see.

get in! 🩵

Oh, it’s a brutal race, and in today’s conditions even harder than usual.

To be fair, I thought he did the announcement to the presentation quite well. However, the interview with the cox earlier was more slapdash. His podcast, though, is actually quite good.

fussychica · 04/04/2026 16:17

I think it's a shame that the teams aren't made up of undergraduates rather than lots of people who are brought in from all over the world to "do a Masters or similar" but actually totally on their ability to row.
I was always a Cambridge girl as a child but switched to Oxford when DS went to Keble as a post graduate.
I thought we might get a sinking this year.

Silverbirchleaf · 04/04/2026 16:18

A sinking crossed my mind as well.

Glittertwins · 04/04/2026 16:19

This idiot can’t even understand a mistake - did he not even watch the race!??

NorthSouthEast · 04/04/2026 16:19

Could Jamie Laing have got that any more wrong. Saying the wrong name for the losing side ! Just embarrassing!

Silverbirchleaf · 04/04/2026 16:20

Oops!

FoolOfShips · 04/04/2026 16:22

I'm cringing at that! What an embarrassing cock up.

FoolOfShips · 04/04/2026 16:26

Clare being tactful signing off there. Good old Clare.

Booooooooom · 04/04/2026 16:31

All Jamie could say was ‘how are you feeling’ - he seemed to have no facts or knowledge to contribute at all!

Boutonnière · 04/04/2026 16:32

I’m now recovering from my DH’s annual helpful instructions bellowed to the crews - on TV, not in person. He gets very involved ! He was a club rower on the Thames, not a college rower, and knows every piece of vulnerability and advantage on that course. We both gasped when a log floated into view, which Oxford had to skirt ( they weren’t going to win at that point, anyway)

Strange collection of presenters.

I know, he only had two to choose from! Blimey.

Safe pair of hands. Though to my 14 year old she will always be the woman who made a big error in the Trojan Horse task in Celebrity Traitors…😀

harriethoyle · 04/04/2026 16:37

Jamie Laing was an utterly bizarre choice as co-host… I know he’s a channel 4 product but really?!

Netcurtainnelly · 04/04/2026 17:22

usually do. Had no idea it was on though. Didn't check what was on today I've been out. Got back and saw it was on. Never mind.

Aww, that made me lol - as she comes from Harlow, Essex, same as me - and it’s not often said about us Essex girls tbh 😁. Hoping I sound similar now, though I doubt the things I say sound quite as intelligent or interesting as Dr Fry.

I’m also from Essex, and Hannah Fry ‘ain’t got an Essex accent babes.😉

Her voice is gorgeous because it’s refined RP but without any sneering, upper class drawl. Stephen Fry has a lovely voice as well.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 05/04/2026 06:39

Both races were incredibly exciting yesterday. I think the choppy conditions added such a sense of drama.

EasternStandard · 05/04/2026 06:59

I love it when anyone breaks a losing streak so the women’s was brilliant for me. The men’s was good too.

i was listening to the radio and someone said it’s 100 years next year for the women’s race and suggested the men should go first and women second next year.

The fact a boat could’ve sunk made it exciting too.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 05/04/2026 07:21

We watched, both teens are rowers so it kind of dominates. By all accounts there are 'better' events, but we all love the pomp and tradition of this one.

I googled yesterday and the Americans and other tourists love it! No equivalent in USA. Plus stallgilders bar owners get away with serving crepes and Bollinger for ridiculous prices.

When I went a few times and in Putney (00s) it was nuts but a lot of fun. My Irish male platonic friend adored it!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/04/2026 07:30

Stall holders not holders!
