Help! Which foods resemble cardboard!?

I promise there’s a reasonable reason to ask this question..

DD (3 next week) has suspected autism/delay whatever else. She is currently not speaking and has no understanding to go along with this.

she also has pica, one of her favourites is she likes to eat cardboard. We’ve obviously tried to remove all cardboard like things but sometimes you forget and she’s bloody quick!

the HV has said about trying to find a food that resembles the feel and look of cardboard. 🤢 she also likes paper, for that one I’m going to get some edible rice paper!

So low iron is a symptom, you need to find out the underlying cause. There is a blood test to check for coeliac disease which would be worth getting. Some symptoms of coeliac are neurological and there is research to suggest a link between coeliac and autism.

GP said cause was likely restricted died

Are they providing support with nutritional deficiencies and emotional needs, and not just recommending replicating cardboard-like foods?

Yes sort of, as everything it’s an incredibly long wait, we were referred to paediatrics last July… waiting on appt hopefully May/June time.

HV is OK but sometimes I feel her suggestion are not really applicable to DD. I just take little bits from it. I do still message her portage worker from time to time who is lovely and helpful.

Aldi's own-brand version of bite-sized shredded wheats - I ate a lot of cardboard when I was pregnant, and these give me the same comforting feeling. Real shredded wheat has too much of a taste to it, but the Aldi ones are much more neutral. Wholewheat pasta, cooked and left to go cold, could work too. I'll try to think of other things I ate and come back!

It’s 100% these that you need. All the other suggestions like ryvita are crispy which is not what you need. These left out for a short time are EXACTLY like cardboard and are loved by a child I know with PICA!

I think they're called Crackerbread, in a yellow box.

Undercook a pizza (or just pizza base) and then let go cold.
Ice cream cones, the thicker brown wrap type softened as cardboard and the thinner type as paper.

There is a sort of crisp bread from whole food shops which makes robots seem like white bread. It’s really cardboard-like.

Most cereals and most sliced bread.
