Help! Which foods resemble cardboard!?

I promise there’s a reasonable reason to ask this question..

DD (3 next week) has suspected autism/delay whatever else. She is currently not speaking and has no understanding to go along with this.

she also has pica, one of her favourites is she likes to eat cardboard. We’ve obviously tried to remove all cardboard like things but sometimes you forget and she’s bloody quick!

the HV has said about trying to find a food that resembles the feel and look of cardboard. 🤢 she also likes paper, for that one I’m going to get some edible rice paper!

Gluten free pizza bases.

That is a great suggestion! I'm coeliac and I honestly wished I'd packed my gerbils in my handbag last time I ate at Pizza Express.

Has anyone suggested Ryvita yet?

Needlenardlenoo · 03/04/2026 17:48

These maybe.

Those are fairly decent crunchy matzos and not available all year round. Nope, you need Rakusens, OP. They are truly cardboardy. And they’re available all year.

Ryvita cracker bread left in the fridge or out of the packet in a tin fit a couple of weeks so it loses its crispiness is one of my favourite foods of all time, and is often compared to cardboard by anyone else who eats it…

Tonissister · 03/04/2026 22:13

Wholemeal flatbreads or pita. Maybe left out overnight to go a bit hard and stale.

Does she drink anything? If she does, can you add Abidec or other vitamin and mineral supplements to her drink that may take away the pica craving. It's often triggered by lack of essential minerals.

eyespartyparty · 03/04/2026 22:14

Sorry haven’t RTFT so maybe already mentioned but if you leave wraps out to air for a while they 100% have the same cardboard effect!

Ineffable23 · 03/04/2026 22:18

Leave ricecakes out the packet for a bit, like a few to twenty four hours. Very cardboardy.

Aoap78 · 03/04/2026 22:18

My first thought was rice cakes &co too. If you make them at home, you can add neutral tasting elements like seeds, some flours, which should help digestion also.

ThemUnsYouseUns · 03/04/2026 22:28

Wholewheat lasagna sheets?

goingtotown · 03/04/2026 23:18

Ryvita Crackerbread.

massinsaln · 03/04/2026 23:21

Are they providing support with nutritional deficiencies and emotional needs, and not just recommending replicating cardboard-like foods?

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 03/04/2026 23:24

Chappatis

Ohthatsabitshit · 03/04/2026 23:27

I think you need to scoot over to the SNchat board and ask this again. There are lots of us who have been where you are. Don’t assume she doesn’t understand or listen just because she’s not talking or reacting. You CAN learn to eat more things and more appropriate things so keep going.

Thank you for all the suggestions, she has actually had a blood test for iron and it did come back low. Of course we can’t get the lovely iron liquid down her! She tolerates some iron gummies, it’s not equivalent exactly to the liquid but I figure anything is better than nothing!

So low iron is a symptom, you need to find out the underlying cause. There is a blood test to check for coeliac disease which would be worth getting. Some symptoms of coeliac are neurological and there is research to suggest a link between coeliac and autism.

hahabahbag · 04/04/2026 08:43

Ryevita, revolting stuff, even the same colour.

hahabahbag · 04/04/2026 08:45

Actually most gluten free bread isn’t much better

namechange62 · 04/04/2026 08:51

I was eating a large Moroccan/Turkish? round flat bread only yesterday which I had in the freezer. I thought it tasted just like cardboard. Especially as it was quite dry.
I hope you find something for her. Good luck

Iwouldrathernot · 04/04/2026 09:28

If you have a Polish shop nearby, Flipsy or Tygryski are very good for that sort of texture experience and are perfect for babies/kids

I’m not really assuming it, it’s glaringly obvious unfortunately. Surely to understand something you need to have some sort of two way interaction? She will try new food but I don’t think it’s because she wants to or understands it’s because she mouths everything anyway. 🙈
