Storming off! When did you last 'storm off'?

Such a MN thing, storming off. DH 'stormed off slamming the door behind him' etc.

I actually went a bit stormy today, it was a double whammy MN parking issue too. I told the stormee he needed to get some driving lessons and properly stormed off with a flourish. It felt great 😉

I don’t think I have since I was a teenager

Never. It's a ridiculous phrase, and I have also known any sensible adult do it.

You should try it, it's empowering 😉

Annoying colleague - ignore
Demanding family members - block
Needy friend - ghost
Parking twats - storm off

I had a boyfriend once who didn’t like it that I was so calm and reasonable during disagreements, and finally told me he needed me to storm off, so he could come running after me like in the movies.

I tried to oblige once but it was so awkward. I had to stop and collect my purse, and wasn’t able to suppress the instinct to tuck my chair neatly back under the table, and it’s hard to do that while maintaining the appearance of passionate fury.

Flouncing is more elegant, with possibly a withering look over my shoulder

And so much more effective and in control than ‘storming off’.

Rightly or wrongly, I think of a flounce as a more female and refined version of storming off. The latter is somehow more masculine, out of control and trying - unsuccessfully - to assert dominance.

That's very Ross and Rachel 🤣

I've not had a good storm off for ages.

My best one was back in A-levels when my foul teacher ranted at me for missing one stage out of his convoluted multi-stage homeworks and was blathering on about how I'd be lucky to scrape an E, and I just got up and walked out. I remember looking for my form tutor but then feeling a bit lost because I couldn't find her or somewhere to go while I was still upset.

My other one I can recall clearly was also in response to irate, unfair criticism.

My favourite ones are when teenagers are stropping about a consequence being issued, try to slam the door, but are thwarted by slow motion door closures (or having to stick their head back in to ask where to go) Grin

We have an electric reclining chair that is the slowest moving thing ever seen. We all sit in it as it’s comfy and in a good spot. Whenever the sitter gets up, someone else has to say “Storming off are ya?” As they slowly slowly slowly make it back to sitting position…

danglethedingle · 31/03/2026 20:14

I don't think I have ever stormed off...I am more of a stand and argue person, or on one or two occasions, run away in terror.

I have chucked a plate full of dinner against the wall, and a mug full of apple juice, on reflection storming off would have been a better response because I ended up have to clean up the mess and replace the crockery.

ainsleysanob · 31/03/2026 20:16

Never! I stand and argue like my life depends on it! I am the causer of others ‘storming off’ but have never done the storming myself.

What is the difference between a storm and a flounce?

A storm is a flounce with attitude.

Pebbles16 · 31/03/2026 20:33

Once. About 20 years ago when the father of my godchildren told me I was "letting down humanity" because I had not yet had a (living) child - "living" is my addition because I'd had a very late miscarriage and he knew that.

We were in a pub. I said nothing just got up and walked out. He then called DH to say I was mentally unstable which caused all sorts of unnecessary drama. It was definitely a storm not a flounce.

Looking back - not sure if it was a compliment or criticism. Thankfully I now have independent relationships with his children and his lovely and long-suffering wife. DH has never spoken to him since. I am not that petty and that "storm out" got a lot of the anger out so I mostly just feel he is a numpty.

OrdinaryGirl · 31/03/2026 20:35

I long to storm off. The closest I’ve got is replacing my pen lid really quite firmly.

CurlewKate · 31/03/2026 20:39

There are loads of things Mumsnetters seem to do that never happen in real life to grown ups.

YerMotherWasAHamster · 31/03/2026 20:42

It was in 2006 or 7 i think.
My husband had been out all night drinking with his friends without letting me know he wasnt coming home and when he got home the next day I grabbed my keys and fucked off out in my car for the day.

Sparkles1212 · 31/03/2026 20:46

I'm not sure that I've ever stormed or flounced. I'm disappointed in myself !

AnniesMother · 31/03/2026 20:46

I’ve found it a more male trait than female, although I had a female colleague in a previous job who stropped off out the building several times a week. Among many of the reasons I don’t work there any more

Meetmeunderthemoonlight · 31/03/2026 20:50

I've not stormed off since my younger teenage years.

Not flounced since covid times, I think.

These days as I am more older, wiser and mature... its more a head tilt and tinkling laugh Grin

BoarBrush · 31/03/2026 21:46

After a rather good argument and a lot of home truths, I stormed off last year, it was either that or punch the utter coke headed alcoholic twat. It was outside the school after school club (not in front of the kids). The longtime chilled out school helper lady tried to call me back, "brush cmon, we can try sort it out", the teacher who knows me very well said "no, don't. She's done".

I spoke to that teacher that night on the phone, she was actually worried I was on CCTV and I would attack her and not stop. That cctv footage actually did indeed cause a lot of change, for the twat parent and child.

And now everyone lives in peace.

Are we supposed to be impressed people were concerned that you might lose control to the extent you would assault somebody?
