Storming off! When did you last 'storm off'?

Such a MN thing, storming off. DH 'stormed off slamming the door behind him' etc.

I actually went a bit stormy today, it was a double whammy MN parking issue too. I told the stormee he needed to get some driving lessons and properly stormed off with a flourish. It felt great 😉

I honestly can’t think of a time, not in recent years anyway. Maybe I should do a bit more storming, I’m too mellow these days 😂

It's difficult to storm off when you are unsteady on your feet and use a rollater.

These days I settle for walking off in a huff.

shellyleppard · 31/03/2026 19:19

I don't always storm off but I do give the doors a good slam.... makes me feel better!!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 31/03/2026 19:20

I did a bit of storming when I was married. Since I divorced him I've only done a wee bit when the kids were all teenagers and extra obnoxious. So, no storming in the last ten years or more!

I feel virtuous.

SunnieShine · 31/03/2026 19:20

I can do a pretty good flounce in a pinch.

I ‘wheelchair-off’, at the max speed it does of about 4mph…. Solidarity ♥️

I have only ever stormed off once in my life.
We go on group holidays with SIL and their family. SIL is lovely but BIL has anxiety about eating out and rather than just avoiding the group meal, he just becomes a complete arse at bill time. This time he was right at the other end of the table. I worked out how much DH,DS and I owed and let him know, he wasn’t happy because by his reckoning we owed £3.50 or similar less than what I had said. It was a hot evening, we had been there a while, I said leave it and if it’s extra it can go towards the tip ( he doesn’t tip). He then got irate and tried to beckon me down to his end of the table using a hand signal that you would use on a dog. I felt pure and utter rage ( this wasn’t the first time he had been a pain at bill payment time) and without really thinking about it, I got up and went for a walk outside until it was time to go home.

Still don’t know what came over me but it was very satisfying.
Nowadays we either go to Wetherspoons and each get our own on the app, or one of the other adults pays the bill then lets everyone know what they owe.

I'm pretty mellow too or was until menopause

However, a twat in a Porsche 4x4 telling me not to park within 5m of him....

The hand signal would have finished me off!

I limp off, slowly, but with purpose 😊

Enrichetta · 31/03/2026 19:31

I’d call this a flounce, @rookiemere rather than a storming off. And a justified flounce at that.

I have flounced off a few times during my long life but i don’t think I’ve stormed off since i was about 7…

😂

That made me laugh.

Years since I had a good storm, like someone else said...I think I am getting too mellow nowadays.

hazelberry · 31/03/2026 19:36

I got huffily out of the car today after DP annoyed me. I don't think he even noticed though.

Miranda65 · 31/03/2026 19:38

Never. It's a ridiculous phrase, and I have also known any sensible adult do it.

Who wants to be sensible all the time?😏

BrickProblems · 31/03/2026 19:40

My DP thought I’d stormed off yesterday. I’d actually gone to buy an emergency creme egg.

Shodan · 31/03/2026 19:47

I can't remember the last time I stormed off- or even if I ever have, tbh.

I do a fine line in sharp, outraged sniffs though. Accompanied sometimes by a Hard Stare for emphasis.

YelramBob · 31/03/2026 19:48

Yep. Told him I pay road tax, I'm not blocking him in or obstructing him in any way. Just another entitled dick with a huge car 🙄

What is the difference between a storm and a flounce?

HeddaGarbled · 31/03/2026 19:51

Not since my 30s, I don’t think. Can’t be bothered these days. I just carry on reading or mumsnetting or whatever.

Fgfgfg · 31/03/2026 19:53

For me, storming is a bit more aggressive than flouncing; maybe a bit of door slamming or swearing. Flouncing is more elegant, with possibly a withering look over my shoulder.

Doggymummar · 31/03/2026 19:54

At school I imagine, in the 80s

I remember a boy at primary school who was on crutches, who managed to storm off from an argument at quite a high speed.

BogRollBOGOF · 31/03/2026 19:58

I've not had a good storm off for ages.

My best one was back in A-levels when my foul teacher ranted at me for missing one stage out of his convoluted multi-stage homeworks and was blathering on about how I'd be lucky to scrape an E, and I just got up and walked out. I remember looking for my form tutor but then feeling a bit lost because I couldn't find her or somewhere to go while I was still upset.

My other one I can recall clearly was also in response to irate, unfair criticism.

My favourite ones are when teenagers are stropping about a consequence being issued, try to slam the door, but are thwarted by slow motion door closures (or having to stick their head back in to ask where to go) Grin
