Perimenopause- have supplements actually helped?

burntfingerss · 30/03/2026 12:00

I’m worried about sinking a ton of money on supplements that ultimately make no difference to how I’m feeling!

There also seems to be such a hierarchy of brands, and cheapies from the supermarket just not cutting the mustard. Does how much you spend really make a difference?

Has anyone found that supplements really did help, and if so how long it took to see the effects?

thanks!

Magnesium helps me sleep.

That's about the only one I actually notice a difference with.

Missymarple · 30/03/2026 12:21

I'd say yes to magnesium, it's improved my sleep but not stopped the wakings entirely. Probably collagen too, I took it for my hair but my skin is definitely showing the benefits.

Lottapianos · 30/03/2026 12:59

My specialist menopause doctor (Newson Health) said the only supplements that make any difference are
Vitamin D3
Vitamin K2 (helps absorption of vit D)
Omega 3
Calcium - only if your diet is deficient

She was fine with me taking magnesium glycinate because it helps with restless legs at night. She said to avoid collagen supplements - eat more protein instead

Are you interested in / can you take HRT?

Magnesium for sleep. I had to try a few before I found which works. Magnesium threonate in my case.

Vitamin B for energy but I've been taking tamoxifen for years, so I probably need it because of that.

Delatron · 30/03/2026 14:41

I’d be wary of spending money on any supplements that claim to help with the perimenopause.

Magnesium can help with sleep but for me HRT was the only thing that solved my sleep issues.

You just need to make sure your diet is healthy and balalnced. I take Omega 3 and vitamin D.
But that’s more for general health.

Exercise and lifestyle changes can help with symptoms. Not enough for me but for some they can be enough.

I take a Woman 50+ multivitamin and mineral supplement and an ashwagandha supplement and felt much better for it quite quickly. I have a tendency to be anaemic, so the iron in the multivit will have helped. The ashwagandha seemed to knock my anxiery on the head completely. I've been taking it for a couple of years and am currently seeing if I'm now fine if I wean myself off it.

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 30/03/2026 14:50

I take Menopace which has stopped completely the hot flushes and night sweats I was getting and all round has just made me feel more human.

I also take a general multivitamin with iron, and magnesium glycinate which has massively helped with my sleep and restlessness at night.

I also swear by ashwaganda for my anxiety. I used to constantly feel on edge and wired and on the verge of panic and taking this stopped it in its tracks very quickly.

Melarus · 30/03/2026 15:09

Menopace wiped out my hot flushes, so I'm grateful to it for that. It also appears to have stopped my hair from constantly falling out. But it didn't help with sleep until I added in extra magnesium.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 30/03/2026 15:10

I didn’t take magnesium but did take menopace max and sage, both of which didn’t do that much good to be honest.

henlake7 · 30/03/2026 15:46

I take collagen and it did seem to make my skin look better.
Although I was already taking a multivitamin and omega 3 anyways as my diet is about 95% vegan.

A friend of mine, who is not at all a 'woo' sort, says she has found lions mane mushroom really helpful, she keeps dried mushrooms and sprinkles a bit onto salads etc. But it looks like one can buy it as a supplement.

bombish · 30/03/2026 16:10

Sage for night sweats works perfectly for me

mylittleyumyum · 30/03/2026 16:17

Menopace completely stopped my blind rage which I was very pleasantly surprised about.

Delatron · 30/03/2026 16:47

I do like Lions Mane but that’s because I can’t focus! So it helps with that. Think it’s quite individual what supplements you may need or find helpful/

I did also find Aswaghanda helped with stress

teileen276 · 08/04/2026 11:19

I take a supplement targeted at menopause and I can definitely say that my mood swings and hot flushes have decreased which is apparently from the red clover ingredient.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/04/2026 11:24

J S health my friend takes the mood and emotional balance one which she says is very good and she’s bought the menopause one too. Neals yard has a tea which is good and they can make you a blend of oils. Origins peace of mind sensory therapy peppermint helped me too. Plus Cath Kidston with space pillow mist and sleep mask, for insomnia. Helped Both in Peri and in menopause.

Yeah my symptoms were still there a lot, especially hot flushes. Maybe the alternatives just didn’t work, I wanted them to and took them for 2 years. Plus healthy diet. And exercise especially vinyasa flow yoga. But I have a medicated underactive thyroid too plus was in a stressful job. HRT only really helped me but considering coming off it and going natural.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/04/2026 11:28

Friend who takes JS health has had appalling Peri symptoms despite taking supplements but her work place is toxic and she’s trying to leave. They’re not paying staff on time but are paying her. Really affects her applying for other jobs and she’s an excellent tri lingual candidate with 13-14 years experience.

Delatron · 08/04/2026 11:36

Personally I do need the HRT along with all the healthy eating/ lifestyle changes and supplements.

The benefits of HRT are huge so happy to stay on it for as long as I need to.

PotatoBreadForTheWin · 08/04/2026 11:45

I don’t take anything apart from magnesium, was surprised how much it helps my sleep. Took collagen for about a year but didn’t notice anything apart from (maybe) slightly stronger nails, and I don’t feel any different now I’ve stopped it.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 08/04/2026 11:48

I took 5htp in perimenopause and I think it helped my anxiety a little.

I'm now on HRT all symptoms are gone except lack of motivation. I take Lions Mane and I really notice the difference when I stop taking it.

Lottapianos · 08/04/2026 12:19

'I'm now on HRT all symptoms are gone except lack of motivation'

Can I ask if you're on testosterone as part of your HRT? It has massively helped me with motivation, focus and confidence

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/04/2026 12:39

Can you all tell me if you suffered from PMT/S or the severe form? And underactive thyroid? As am sure this meant most supplements didn’t help me but HRT did.

I think I need testosterone as only on everol conti. Doctors didn’t offer me anything else, also on fluoxetine Prozac for mental health issues (psychosis anxiety severe insomnia) which I am positive was to do with peri menopause and menopause. Was hospitalised.

Dinnerplan · 08/04/2026 12:53

Check iron/ferritin and supplement appropriately.
