Do you still enjoy shopping on the high street or mostly online?

I tend to do more & more online shopping, which is great as far as it goes, although it’s a bit too easy! But I used to love going out round all the clothes shops etc for a day, treating myself to a nice lunch, then home with all the carrier bags & I do miss that. Really can’t remember the last time I did it. Are you the same or do you still shop “ in real life” rather than virtually?

I would LOVE to go back to shopping noughties style-but I can't because it's just not like that. I still love going to places like Liverpool to shop, because it seems like a bit like a noughties shop, as in busy and lots to look at.
My kids love it too, and keep saying how amazing it is that we had that, so it's not just that I'm old!

Like @Twoshoesnewshoes I'm very specific about what I want to buy and know that - usually - I'll be able to find it online. For example, today I needed to buy a lampshade and knew there would be nothing suitable in any shop locally, so it was off to Pooky's website where I found what I wanted immediately. I make lots of soft furnishings and again, there are no fabric shops near me, so online is the only option - and far easier/more satisfying than traipsing around in vain!

DH much prefers shopping in real high street shops, so occasionally I'll go with him for a mooch, but I get panicky in big stores and rarely buy anything except books (and tbh, I'd rather get those from World of Books).

I've hated high street clothes shopping for years and even when I did, rarely tried stuff on - probably not since my twenties. Now I buy clothes online (often on eBay, but not always) and know the brands/styles I like so have never needed to return anything. For shoes, I will venture to the nearest market town which has a couple of good independent shoe shops plus TK Maxx.

For stuff for the home, we've bought on eBay for 20+ years - everything from sofas and antiques to reels of cotton. I'm not an Amazon shopper - think I've only bought a handful of books and a dog crate there.

Food shopping is either an Ocado delivery or DH pops in on his way home - he enjoys the supermaket experience, I don't, but I make the lists or he'd get the wrong stuff! Today he came home with two bottles of tomato juice (which neither of us drink) instead of pink grapefruit juice 😅

I shop online now. In my town we have far too many pickpockets, gangs of feral people. It’s frightening and not worth it.

TheChosenTwo · 28/03/2026 06:37

Ideally in person for bottoms because i struggle with knowing my size and it’s not always very clear online as to how the fit will be - if a waistband is round my actual waist I will need a smaller size but longer length, if it fits round my hips a regular length is usually fine but often saggy around the bum.
Cba when ordering multiple sizes and sending back (mostly because I hate the process of returning stuff and often don’t bother).
But I dislike shopping in person,
the hassle of trying things on in changing rooms and the limited stock carried. Rarely have the sizes I want to try on in various leg lengths. As a result I just buy less clothes which is no bad thing really.

I’m going to a wedding. It occurred to me that years ago I would have gone shopping in the city and bought everything new. Made a day of it.

As things stand I have bought the dress from a nearby charity shop, shoes on Vinted and I already have a bag and hat that matches. It’s partly the cost of everything, and we are also out of the habit of in person shopping trips. The last time I tried, I found some jeans in M&S but they didn’t hold any stock in my size so I had to order online anyway!

clarrylove · 28/03/2026 06:50

I tend to buy most of my clothing from my local High Street charity shops. They are great and I walk up there most days in my lunch break for a mooch/to visit the Post Office/small supermarket etc. I don't buy clothing online as I think I'm an odd shape so need to try things on. Plus it's v expensive to buy brand new now if you want decent material/quality.

Thriftygal · 28/03/2026 07:10

I get most of clothes via Vinted or Charity shops but I like to go shopping for a few bits like jeans in person.
Shopping wise I'm quite lucky as I live 15 mins drive from the second biggest M&S store in the world at Cheshire Oaks.
I also live less than a 2 min walk away from a bus stop that has buses every 15 mins to Liverpool which is a 20 min journey for £2.

I'm off the Liverpool this morning for a mooch as I'm going to a Baptism in a couple of weeks. The shopping is fantastic in the city centre with most of the well known brands and it is all pedestrianised and close together.

I hate hate hate shopping and going into town. I avoid it like the plague.

crackofdoom · 30/03/2026 16:54

People.....enjoy clothes shopping??

I've always seen it as an occasional necessary evil- when I need jeans, basically. They have to be tried on, there's no way round it.

Braved the county town on Saturday for just that purpose. Hot, crowded, soulless, stressful. Especially Primark- which did not have my perfect pair of jeans. Eventually found some in M&S, which was calmer but has the world's worst mirrors in the changing rooms. Bumped into a couple of friends, all agreed how awful it was.

Never mind, that's that done for a year or so now. Back to charity shops and Vinted for everything else.

purplecorkheart · 30/03/2026 18:40

I used to enjoy going into the local city and having a walk around the shops, have a nice lunch, pick up a book in a little bookshop.

Post COVID much of the highstreet shut down so I got in the habit of online shopping.

Although the high street is picking up again but I am still not going in as the City has got quite rundown. There is a lot of aggressive begging and petty crime.

Badbadbunny · 30/03/2026 18:50

Our town's High Street doesn't have any normal shops anymore - it's all vape shops, turkish barbers, charity shops, bookies and a huge Wetherspoons. I couldn't buy any clothes there if I wanted to (except second hand charity stuff), nor any electrical goods, nor household goods, nor homeware goods nor any fresh foods. The nearest we've got to a "proper" shop is a B&M Bargains!!

We used to have a M&S, Woolworths, Dorothy Perkins, Richards, Hepworths, Greenwoods, Burtons, and several small independents for clothes, an electronic/electrical goods shop, a couple of hardware stores, various fruit & veg, butchers, newsagents, fishmongers, etc., and a few medium sized supermarkets.

The rot started when we got a huge out of town Asda back in the early 90s, closely followed by a huge out of town Morrisons, closely followed by a huge out of town Tesco. The town centre shops slowly closed down and as footfall dropped due to the closures, particularly M&S which caused a knock on effect of more closing due to M&S shoppers going elsewhere. A sparse few remained, but they were hit when internet shopping took off.

I actually enjoy going to big city centres once or twice a year where they still have shops. Just been to Newcastle and spent the day browsing M&S, Fenwicks, Next, John Lewis, etc., but still sad to see lots of vacant units, even in such a vibrant city centre.

Didntask · 30/03/2026 18:53

Clothes wise, I have no choice but to shop online. I'm over 6ft with a 37" inside leg and there is not one single physical store that holds stock of Tall clothes anymore.

shiningstar2 · 30/03/2026 18:59

I prefer to go into town, shop in person, try on and have nothing to return.
Online I invariably have to buy two sizes because I can never be sure of the exact size I need until I try on.
Also in town I can look around a range of shops, see and feel the fabrics and choose from a wide choice.
I would try 6 dresses on in a shop or range of shops before choosing one of them but I wouldn't buy 6 on line to choose between knowing I would need to send 5 of them back.
