Do you still enjoy shopping on the high street or mostly online?

I tend to do more & more online shopping, which is great as far as it goes, although it’s a bit too easy! But I used to love going out round all the clothes shops etc for a day, treating myself to a nice lunch, then home with all the carrier bags & I do miss that. Really can’t remember the last time I did it. Are you the same or do you still shop “ in real life” rather than virtually?

Can’t afford to buy clothes new even on the high street. Used to love a mooch but no point now if i can’t justify buying anything.
Now my equivalent is to have a cold can of Diet Coke at home on an evening whilst having a scroll through Vinted for some bargains for me and the kids.

Arlanymor · 27/03/2026 12:37

I'm not generally much of a shopper and I live in Swansea so we pretty much don't have a high street anymore. If I wanted to do a proper clothes shop I would go to Cardiff or one of the outlet villages.

All of that said, I genuinely cannot remember the last time I bought anything new. And we have extremely good charity shops here - so it's either that or eBay for me. And actually it was lovely when my godgoblins visited me last and I gave them each £20 to go around the charity shops - they were in hog's heaven - we had a really nice day (just as well as it was raining old ladies and walking sticks!) and then had a little fashion show when we got back home!

DalmationalAnthem · 27/03/2026 12:37

Only online and in supermarkets. High streets have absolutely nothing that appeals.

Limited stock
No viable parking- obviously I'm not paying to park when I can choose to get what I want delivered to my doorstep.

High streets should have been repurposed into something actually useful within the last 2 decades.

JugglingMyNuts · 27/03/2026 12:40

Every time I have gone to a physical store their stock was terrible and I ended up getting what I wanted online instead. I know it’s a viscous circle as less footfall means less shops and stock but I now don’t bother going into town unless food shopping or for service industries like hairdressers.

Pancakeflipper · 27/03/2026 12:40

Hate both.
There's little choice on the highstreet. All very samey. Limited stock in store (its all on their online sites)
Online - I dont want Shein, Temu and similiar types of business model.. I try to buy ethically and feel I am stuck with only a few trusted sites.
I need some new clothes and putting it off as it isn't fun.

TurnipsAndParsnips · 27/03/2026 12:41

I work on Oxford Street and think it has improved in the past year - more proper shops are replacing the suitcase/vape/American candy shops. But I do miss department stores. There’s only really Selfridges and John Lewis now.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 27/03/2026 12:41

I would love to shop in person but my high street is now all vape shops, nail bars and Turkish barbers. The rest is empty units.

I miss Topshop, Athena, La Senza, Our Price, Wollies and Debenhams, to name but a few.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 27/03/2026 12:42

Only online but that's because I have weight to lose. Once I shift it, you'll see me strutting down bond street

Friendlygingercat · 27/03/2026 12:46

Due to increasing mobility issues I have not enjoyed high street shopping for over two decades. First there is the journey into the city and waiting for buses (I dont drive). Then trekking from shop to shop, finding what I want and queuing up. It all seems like far too much hard work when I can buy anything I want online and it comes by courier. I used to enjoy physical shopping but times change and I changed with them. I now run several vintage websites and my business is mostly international.

Notsosweetcaroline · 27/03/2026 12:51

Hate shopping in person, much prefer on line, I know the brands I like and the size I am in those brands, so am pretty much guaranteed they will fit. Sometimes I just don’t like it, and yes it’s a ballache to return, but not enough to put me off.

in shops, I feel too many people, flash decisions to be made, hassle of changing rooms, queuing to pay etc, just can’t be arsed, rather have it delivered and try it on in the comfort of my own home,

muddyford · 27/03/2026 13:13

I can't remember the last time I went shopping for clothes in our local city. I know what I like and sizing so online is brilliant. And I can't remember the last time I had to return anything.

Meadowfinch · 27/03/2026 13:18

I'm taller than the standard 5'4" that the UK fashion industry cuts for, so I prefer to shop in person if I can, to check the length, the placing of the waist, the length of sleeves, the quality of the material etc.

Shopping on-line invariably means I send a lot back which is tedious and time consuming.

Thankfully I live near a market town that still has a department store, some boutiques, and a few chains like Jigsaw.

MabelRoyds · 27/03/2026 13:24

I never go shopping now, really. It’s too crowded, but more that that, the music is too loud and the lighting is too bright and people broadcast rather than talk quietly. It’s just not enjoyable to me nowadays. I loathe harsh rap music and if that’s playing in a shop, I just leave immediately. I find it grating. I used to love charity shopping too, but now it’s absurdly expensive. I’m aware that I sound crotchety and hyper sensitive! Noise cancelling headphones and anti glare specs incoming…

I went into Bath last Saturday for a quick look around the shops before an appointment. It was too people-y for me (tourists, rugby fans, stag and hen dos, plus locals like me). I couldn't wait to get my train home. I was reminded why I only try and enjoy a bit of high street shopping if I have a day off midweek.

It was the same for us when we had a day out in Bath last November; lovely sunny autumn day, just right for a train journey through the picturesque Hampshire and Wiltshire countryside.

We'd envisaged a stroll round the shops and arcades, with a nice lunch somewhere interesting. In the event, the streets were crowded and the restaurants we'd enjoyed in the past had either ceased trading or changed hands - replaced by burger bars and trendy fast food places.

And to top it off, Jolly's was closed for refurbishment - not due to open until next month.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 27/03/2026 13:46

I prefer to shop in person so I can look at and feel the clothes. I always try them on too.
The lady thing I ordered online was ok but not the same colour as it showed in the website.
I don’t like grocery shopping but does all that.

Jellycatspyjamas · 27/03/2026 14:07

I much prefer shopping in person but shops seem to carry so little stock now, and usually odd sizes left that I feel driven to online shopping. I still do go in person but invariably end up ordering online.

Nothungrycat · 27/03/2026 14:38

Mostly real-life. For clothes I quite often add a bit of shopping onto a visit to London for either work or to see art/a play, or I visit Bath which - unlike a few others - I find pretty good - especially since the new M&S has opened. I'm also lucky enough to live in a town with a lot of independent shops so I can buy presents, homewares, that sort of thing, relatively easily. I do buy a few things online, including walking gear, some clothes and shoes, but not very much.

Janesput · 27/03/2026 14:46

After lazily keeping far too many "OK" online orders, I have now resolved to only buy in shops. It's not as easy as it used to be because some shops don't stock much of a range, especially in smaller towns, but I figure if i cba to travel to shop, I don't really need/want it.

Edited

I don't think they do cut for 5'4" anymore? I'm 5'7" and all my life trousers have been too short, until the last few years when I often have to buy petite!

henlake7 · 27/03/2026 14:52

Barely anywhere in my high st to shop (unless you are a teenage girl) but I do still like a mooch around Primark and a fair bit of my wardrobe comes from there.
TBH alot of my favourite shops seem to be on line only anyways.

Emmz1510 · 27/03/2026 14:55

I prefer online shopping, but then I never was much of a shopper. At least not for browsing in the vague hope of getting something! If I know exactly what I want and where to get it then I like to go to a shop.

Girlwithavibe · 27/03/2026 15:15

I've reverted back to going shopping on the high street and big shopping centres !!
I've always loved doing this and making it a day out with snacks coffee lunch dinner and wine 🍷!!
I did then go to online because of choice but then I realised I hate staying home for deliveries and hate having to return things when they don't fit and that is bad for the environment so I got to thinking no I'm boycotting online shopping unless I can't find the size I want but have actually seen it in the physical sense then I'm sticking to high street and the more people that do this there will end up being more stock in stores eventually ,!! I get not everyone loves this but people that do love shopping for a day out BOYCOTT ONLINE shopping 🛍️ x

@DancingFerret Jollys isn't reopening until the autumn (BANES Council who owns the site is doing repairs).

Thank you. So much for the April re-opening notice that was in their window last autumn. The extended closure must be costing them a small fortune in lost trade.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 27/03/2026 23:30

Online
i really don’t enjoy just browsing and do t shop like that.
I’m rather ‘oh I need a grey v neck boxy cardigan, waist length, chunky’ then I search online got exactly what I want.
im ridiculously specific!
