What to watch after Home Fires for a similar period drama feel?

I found Home Fires on U and watched both series over the weekend. Had a Google and was disappointed to see they cancelled it after two seasons. What could I watch that's along the same lines?

Another recommendation for Foyles War

Campion also good with Peter Davidson

I’ve name changed but I was involved in HF. It was cancelled because a new head of itv drama arrived and wanted to put her own stamp on the chan el - happens more than you realise.
Everyone involved was gutted, so thank you for enjoying it still.

I loved home fires! Don’t know anyone in real life who’s watched it!

I just recommended on another thread Tenko which is also on U. It’s quite strong meat in many parts though. I also recommended the old series of Upstairs, Downstairs on ITV X which I binged last year.

Tenko is fabulous, I watched it many years ago when it was originally made. It is very upsetting though.
Can’t bring myself to watch it again.

Home Fires was a stunning drama. Great cast and script, what a huge mistake to axe it.
World on Fire is the closest I can think of to Home Fires. I loved it but I think it's another that was culled too soon after two seasons.
I would also recommend Foyles War - it is a crime series but very gentle and thoughtful and similar era.
Anyone who loved Tenko might like Anzak Girls. It's a bit grittier than Home Fires but covers an aspect of WWI that's not so well known here.
Crimson Fields was a WWI series about British nurses.
I second A Place to Call Home

DameProfessorIDareSay · 27/03/2026 18:50

Thirding ‘A Place To Call Home’. It’s on my rewatch list. David Berry is brilliant in it.

I know this is a German series but Generation War was good when I watched it. Also Das Boot the series

Also in terms of France there's the series Un Village Francis www.justwatch.com/uk/tv-series/a-french-village I really must watch that one as it takes place over several decades, not just the war years.

I really enjoyed Home Fires and was really sad that it wasn't continued.

Yes, Foyle's War is about crime but also lots of interest about the period and attitudes and expectations. The crime is not gory or graphic in any way. Bletchley Circle suggested by another poster also a good call.

Another vote for foyles war

also perhaps Poldark - again interesting about attitudes and historical about impact of French Revolution and uk parliament developments

The French Village is really good but quite a commitment as there are over 70 episodes. It's worth pursuing though as it goes into the repercussions going on even into the 1970s.

Thanks for the heads up - I knew it was long but not that long!
Seaside Hotel (from Denmark) also covers the WW2 years - that's on Channel 4 Walter Presents

Thanks for telling us what happened. I really hope that women is happy with herself 😪 I will probably watch it again in the future and then have another moan about it being cancelled again Grin we can live in hope that maybe one day they bring it back. Thanks for making a great show.

I’ve watched HomeFires twice and agree it’s one of the best.

Yourangduckie · 27/03/2026 20:33

Lots of fab suggestions here to keep me busy this year. Thanks again everyone and I agree with pp Joan Hickson is brilliant at Jane Marple, she's one of my comfort watches.

If you like that kind of social commentary thing, the whole “Back in time for …” series is great, based on family food and home life across the decades, branching out into corner shops and factories. I think it might still be on iPlayer, there were several series, all fascinating.

I’ve looked to find this on streaming or YouTube or anything but it’s not available. I think the company haven’t made the rights available for whatever reason.

tobee · 27/03/2026 23:30

Having said that I’ve just checked on YouTube and I think a few random episodes are available. Last time I looked they had distorting effects on the videos.

I also liked the 1940s House and the reality series set in an Edwardian country house.

Defiantly41 · 27/03/2026 23:33

aaah, what a shame. Looks like Back in time for Tea is on Amazon Prime if you have it

LBFseBrom · 27/03/2026 23:54

Foyle's War is great.

LBFseBrom · 27/03/2026 23:56

I watched A Place to Call Home twice, it was marvellous.

Father Brown is an easy watch.

No Bananas is set during war

I haven't heard of that one. Where can you watch it?

I caught a few episodes of Shine on Harvey Moon while babysitting but haven't got whatever platform it's on at home. It's about a man coming home after WW2 and finding everyone has moved on. I think it was on in the 90s.

Silly stories but great aesthetic.
