What to watch after Home Fires for a similar period drama feel?

I found Home Fires on U and watched both series over the weekend. Had a Google and was disappointed to see they cancelled it after two seasons. What could I watch that's along the same lines?

I just recommended on another thread Tenko which is also on U. It’s quite strong meat in many parts though. I also recommended the old series of Upstairs, Downstairs on ITV X which I binged last year.

Thanks. Tenko looks interesting will give it a try. I also watched the old Upstairs Downstairs last year much preferable to Downtown Abbey in my opinion although I do like Downtown.

The Cazalets is set in the same time period.

I was very disappointed they didn’t make a third series of Home Fires too. I was hoping for a happy ending for Pat. Claire Rushbrook’s characters always seem to be unlucky in love.

Ooh just remembered another one. Wish Me Luck. I think it was shown on Rewind TV recently but I think it’s only available on dvd now. Kate Buffery, Suzanna Hamilton and Jane Asher and Julian Glover. Jane Asher recruiting Kate Buffery and Suzanna Hamilton to become secret agents behind enemy lines in WW II

DisplayPurposesOnly · 26/03/2026 23:26

The Bletchley Circle

Defiantly41 · 27/03/2026 08:16

Yes, Foyle's War is about crime but also lots of interest about the period and attitudes and expectations. The crime is not gory or graphic in any way. Bletchley Circle suggested by another poster also a good call.

Some of the scenes with Pat and Bob 😱 he was vile! I can't believe they cancelled it 😭 I wonder why as the ratings were good. Cazalets now on my watch list, thanks.

@Defiantly41 that's great, thanks. I like gentle things to watch not heavy or programs that raise my anxiety. Think along the lines of Piorot or Marple that kind of thing.

All Creature Great and Small is very feel good. Same era. Channel 5

cheapskatemum · 27/03/2026 11:07

@YourangduckieI know, it made me so sad for Pat, as it was obviously much more difficult to get a divorce in those days. Her friends were beginning to cotton on to what was going on, so that would have been a great storyline for series 3. The leads are all fabulous actors, maybe they got too busy doing other things?

Have you watched Call the Midwife? There’s going to be a prequel set in WW2: the Blitz in Poplar. Might be gritty, but I’m sure there’ll be some happy endings!

Yourangduckie · 27/03/2026 12:48

@cheapskatemum the scene where she went to pack her case and realised she had no where to go was just heartbreaking. Your right the cast were fantastic and I think the series could have gone on for a long time, up past WW2 and beyond. I used to watch call the midwife when it first started and fell away from it for some reason. Oh didn't know about a prequel need to keep an eye out for that.

Ooh. Thanks for that. There was something on R4 about the Warb in Japan yesterday and I was thinking I'd like to watch Tenko again. It's very different from Home Fires though.

All Creatures Great and Small.

I couldn't believe how Home Fires ended - just left us all hanging. So sad it didn't get renewed.

Poirot and Marple are on Netflix although the Marple is an odd adaptation imo and an absolute luvvie fest. Any British actor who didn't get a part in it should feel very peeved.

I watched it during lock down and was in shock when it left such a cliff hanger.

Yourangduckie · 27/03/2026 13:20

@CaptainMyCaptain that's true. Everyone is in them 🤣

@MyOtherProfile it is really sad and that cliff edge ending.... well we will never know now unfortunately because some twit cancelled it.

I've no idea if it's available anywhere, but Housewife, 49 would probably be of interest.

From Wikipedia: Housewife, 49 is a 2006 television film based on the wartime diaries of Nella Last. Written by and starring English actress and comedian Victoria Wood, it follows the experiences of an ordinary housewife and mother in the northern English town of Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, during the Second World War. It was first broadcast in the UK by ITV on 10 December 2006.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/03/2026 13:29

Re 'Marple', I couldn't watch this, as calling Miss Jane Marple 'Marple' was an abomination and for me didn't suggest that they were going to be very faithful to the source. We watched all the older BBC Miss Marple adapations when they were repeated last year. I thought they stood up reasonably well. Joan Hickson was absolutely marvellous.

tobee · 27/03/2026 13:34

The Joan Hickson Miss Marple’s are on ITVX even though they were originally on BBC because ITVX was originally BritBox which was an ITV and BBC archive collaboration. Particularly like The Murder at the Vicarage with Paul Eddington.

Wallabyone · 27/03/2026 13:50

Have you watched A Place to Call
Home?
It’s very good!

Rictasmorticia · 27/03/2026 14:00

A family at War was excellent. It had several seasons

Defiantly41 · 27/03/2026 14:05

If you like that kind of social commentary thing, the whole “Back in time for …” series is great, based on family food and home life across the decades, branching out into corner shops and factories. I think it might still be on iPlayer, there were several series, all fascinating.
