What do you do on Easter Sunday with older children?

I was wondering what others do on Easter Sunday? We have always done a roast dinner and egg hunt but my 10 and 11 year olds no longer want to do this!
we’d like to start some new traditions and wondered what others do with older children?!

I wouldn’t consider those to be older children. It’s not like they’re 20 and hungover on Easter. Mine are 8 & 13 and we do an egg hunt and a roast dinner. 😂 I can’t imagine 10 & 11 year olds not being thrilled about chocolate! Mine are ridiculously competitive about the egg hunt. Our roast is more a BBQ though (lamb cooked on the smoker) so unless it’s completely pissing it down, it’s usually an outside day for us. They might play with friends who come over. They’ll go on the trampoline. We have our lunch outside usually unless weather is terrible and probably go for a walk.

SecretBather · 25/03/2026 14:27

We still do an Easter egg hunt with 20yos 😂

Nice lunch and go for a walk?

Go to church?

BrieAndChilli · 25/03/2026 14:29

At that age it was a clue based egg hunt so they had to think about it a bit. Last year I had my niece and nephew too and so a 11 year old, 2x 14 year olds, 16 year old andn an 18 year old. I created an escape room type thing with the chocolate all locked up with a coded padlock.

ThirtysomethingMummy · 25/03/2026 14:29

Sorry should have been clearer. Our DC have said they don’t want an egg hunt as they are apparently “too grown up” for this.

The kids hid the eggs.
And hidden around the house so it’s much harder. NB. Count the eggs before you start, otherwise some turn up months later.

MaturingCheeseball · 25/03/2026 14:31

Make it a treasure hunt with clues. My dcs loved (still love!) treasure hunts; clues related to a film we’d seen/book read/the dog, and got them off their arses and charging up and down stairs, in garden in pursuit of prize.

MiddleAgedDread · 25/03/2026 14:31

pretty much the same as any other Sunday!

EasterlyDirection · 25/03/2026 14:31

We just stopped when the DCs said they didn't want to do it any more, it's just a normal Sunday for us now. Neither of them are big fans of chocolate but we do usually have a few bags of mini eggs. Neither like roast lamb so we never started that tradition.

AppleKatie · 25/03/2026 14:39

Id tell them not to be so joyless and hide the eggs tbh.

The teens in my extended family still love an Easter egg hunt; what’s not to like 😂

I certainly wouldn’t be offering alternatives, if they don’t want to do an egg hunt/eat a roast /go to church I’d assume they’ve opted out of Easter and do those things without them

elliejjtiny · 25/03/2026 14:42

It's a normal Sunday but with a bit more chocolate for us

DeQuin · 25/03/2026 14:47

If you like your extended family invite them all over for a buffet and an egg hunt. Even if your kids don't want to others will. (They can hide the eggs?).

Easter is better than Christmas in our house. Much less stress, nicer weather, only one day, chocolate not presents.

Cupcakegirl13 · 25/03/2026 14:49

If they don’t want to do it then just don’t do it , no need to replace with something else . A nice roast and a family day .

DespairMode · 25/03/2026 14:54

My 18 year old will still do an egg hunt

OsmanthusRose · 25/03/2026 14:56

Mine are 16 and 18 and we will still do a roast dinner and egg hunt. I asked them if they wanted the egg hunt, they said they didn't care, I said if they didn't have the egg hunt they would have their main egg but not the little ones as I am not just handing over a bunch of tiny eggs, I just won't get them, and they suddenly decided they did, in fact, want the egg hunt. Who knows when it will ever stop. The roast is non negotiable because family come round.

RoyalPenguin · 25/03/2026 14:58

They don't want to do an egg hunt?? I find this surprising. It doesn't take long and they get chocolate at the end of it! But if they really don't want to, then I guess I wouldn't do anything particular to replace it.

Here we'll have grandparents visiting for the day, an egg hunt in the garden (my DC are 16 and older), roast lunch and a walk after lunch.

So carry on as normal minus the egg hunt. Try again next year if the egg hunt is important to you.

Easter Eggs for breakfast here on Easter Sunday. We've never bothered hiding them!

Denim4ever · 25/03/2026 15:11

Church and a normal Sunday with more chocolate in the mix. When DS was younger and still had grand parents we'd plan on seeing them over the Easter break

Talkinpeace · 25/03/2026 15:13

Do an Egg hunt.
But use the tiny solid chocolate eggs from Lidl
and make them HARD to find.

My kids are both adults.
I hide the eggs early in the morning
the search is in the afternoon
it can take WEEKS to find them all

green eggs hidden in bushes is my skill set !

FusionChefGeoff · 25/03/2026 15:40

Nothing I’m afraid Easter is just another day but with chocolate here!

Cleanthecoffeemachine · 25/03/2026 15:44

We do a clue based hunt, each clue leading to the next one, then all the eggs at the end. Some clues are inside, some outside, a couple down the road. Including using What3words, clues in other languages that need translating, and family in-jokes.

GrillaMilla · 25/03/2026 15:49

If they don't want to do the egg hunt, I'd just give them the eggs. I'm not sure what else you'd replace it with!
I'd be telling mine not to be so miserable and do it anyway, we did it well into the teen years.
