What do you do on Easter Sunday with older children?

I was wondering what others do on Easter Sunday? We have always done a roast dinner and egg hunt but my 10 and 11 year olds no longer want to do this!
we’d like to start some new traditions and wondered what others do with older children?!

We're another that has never done anything on Easter Sunday. Even when the kids were little there has never been an Easter bunny, egg hunts, etc. TBH DH has often been working so it's just another day for us.

I'm not a total bore and love all things Christmassy, but Easter isn't anything special here (apart from a nice long weekend off work!)

Spinningnewbie · 25/03/2026 16:15

No one needs to force 'traditions' on kids that will soon be teenagers.

FurForksSake · 25/03/2026 16:17

Kids are 10 and 13, we will do an egg hunt and usually an escape room in a box. This year we might do a cold case. Roast and a walk. Then they can please themselves. So that will be VR and Xbox.

Mine don’t like lamb so I will cook them steaks.

My adult children love an egg hunt but definitely now more fun with the grandchildren.
@Cleanthecoffeemachine has some brilliant ideas !

PurpleThistle7 · 25/03/2026 16:24

I think a scavenger hunt sounds fun and might copy that idea next year. Mine are 9 and 13 and show no signs of losing enthusiasm though!

Clementine12 · 25/03/2026 16:42

My 14 yo DS is very teenagery and cynical about an egg hunt. Yet he still jumps out of bed and runs around the garden when I tell him it is set up!

Agamede · 25/03/2026 16:47

4 teens here. We are normally away for the Easter weekend but go to church wherever we are and always do an egg hunt. We normally eat out or DH cooks lamb if we are home. This year, we are home so will have our breakfast and egg hunt, go to church and then we have a picnic in Regents Park planned with family but will eat indoors then have a walk in the park if it’s rainy,

I think being too old for an egg hunt might be just a phase. Either that or my family is all very immature!

EatSleepDreamRepeat · 29/03/2026 11:16

I've never done an egg hunt. Never known this to be a big thing in my friend circle. We go for a nice walk and an ice cream/coffee.

FurForksSake · 29/03/2026 11:20

Interestingly my youngest son still has a swimming lesson on Easter Sunday, I assumed the leisure centre would be closed.

We’ve done Easter egg hunts since I was a child in the 1980s. They were originally in my granny’s large and sprawling garden, but my kids have always done indoors ones. We usually find an egg or two when we move furniture throughout the year.

WaitingForMojo · 29/03/2026 11:21

We still do a treasure hunt style egg hunt and a roast, with teens, and my eldest is an adult. They write the clues for each other now then I do the hiding of the eggs. They can pitch in with the roast as they get older, make a starter / pudding / side dish etc?

Dr13Hadley · 29/03/2026 11:23

We’re on a flight to Spain this Easter Sunday all being well. However, normally we’d do an egg hunt (outside if dry) and probably a roast dinner (lamb) then relax and watch a film. Kids are 12 and 9.

whomadethatmess · 29/03/2026 11:57

My DC are young adults, they all still come back at Easter if they can, sometimes with boy/girl friends in tow. We do a treasure hunt for the eggs (DH puts a lot of effort into the clues), go for a really long walk with the dogs then home for a lamb roast.
I love Easter as a family time.

dinbin · 29/03/2026 12:03

Our Easter Sunday hasn’t changed with the dc growing up.

Im not sure why you need to introduce new traditions just because.

Neolara · 29/03/2026 12:05

My 16, 19 and 21 yos are still adamant that the Easter egg hunt continues.

reluctantbrit · 29/03/2026 12:08

I think DD was 17 when she stopped searching for eggs. And that was only because we were away over Easter.

We moved the hand indoors to avoid embarrassing herself outside. But it was hunt or no eggs.

We normally do a roast, lamp for the adults and something else for DD who hates it. We then have hat cross buns in the afternoon or some other cake and ideally if the weather is good, we try to get out for a small stroll.

Clearinguptheclutter · 29/03/2026 12:09

Mine still want an egg hunt but I’m not sure we have any other specific things we do at Easter other than try and catch up with family but not always possibly.
this year we are mixing things up a bit and heading to airport for a short break late afternoon

SapatSea · 29/03/2026 12:11

Nice lunch, a family walk, watch a family movie? - star wars,HP, LOTR - whatever your family like! eat the eggs and chill

MeganM3 · 29/03/2026 12:12

Slow morning, unless DC wants to do kids park run. Normal lunch as kids don’t particularly like a roast so I won’t bother. Then we get together with the wider family for the afternoon. The big kids (cousins) usually put on an Easter egg hunt for the little ones. Easter Monday we always do a long bike ride with another family with older kids, involving a pub stop off or two. They seem to like it but it’s quite hard to keep up as moods change very frequently. For us the key is to do stuff with other people their age be it cousins or family friends. Then they sort of make their own fun.

midnights92 · 29/03/2026 12:12

Can they take over the hiding of the eggs from you? You can do the finding

Iizzyb · 29/03/2026 22:30

Easter egg hunt with clues around the house and garden (or wherever we are staying). Haven’t started the clues yet. Confused Anyone seen anything Harry Potter or Stranger Things related?!

Tumbleweed101 · 02/04/2026 02:01

I've stopped doing the easter egg hunt the last couple of years but only because my older teens stopped wanting to do it. I'd still be happy to hide eggs for them lol. I've been doing it over 20 years now - if they don't want to then they better bring a grandchild into the mix lol. My children are all 16 and above so they aren;t interested, but it means we can have a nice roast and chill. I'm not buying easter eggs for any except the 16yo this year, partly because of cost and partly because i won't see some of them.

likewhatyoudo · 05/04/2026 01:12

Pancake flipping; and make attractive fruit platters sprinkled with small chocolate eggs.

DDs 14 and 16

Acunningruse · 05/04/2026 02:17

9 yo and 13 yo and its still an egg hunt, roast dinner and walk. You could make the egg hunt more challenging? Really surprised 10 and 11 yos are turning down chocolate?!

piscofrisco · 05/04/2026 05:19

Egg rolling. I did it as a child and we still do it now (boil eggs, pain then, roll them down the nearest grassy hill to see whose goes farthest). Other than that I will go to church, we will got for a walk around the nearest NT garden and parkland and a fancy roast (normal roast but with more side dishes) and a few games later if anyone is up for it.
