Well done that fella. Next level communication skills, cool under pressure, courage in the face of mortal danger. Chapeau.

A man in his 30s looks straight at the camera. He is wearing an outdoor jacket, hooded top and is wearing a baseball cap branded 'Zavetti'. He has a neat ginger beard and goatee. His hair is shaved short.

Nathan Newby, who used kindness to persuade the "lone-wolf terrorist" to abandon his plan, is being awarded the George Medal.

I read that and was going to start a thread. Amazing story, so impressive. Not just the talking him down, but noticing in the first place that something wasn’t right.

Jacopo · 25/03/2026 10:36

This is a real man. Not the tanned, svelte, self-obsessed influencers. This.

Whosthetabbynow · 25/03/2026 10:46

Bless his kind heart and thank God for him xx

sittingonabeach · 25/03/2026 10:48

Can you imagine giving someone a hug not knowing whether he could have blown you up? He really deserves his medal

NancyMeyers · 25/03/2026 10:49

Wow, just wow. Was just going to say the same thing about this man being the opposite of toxic masculinity, as has already been said. What a role model. I'm so moved by what he did.

NancyMeyers · 25/03/2026 10:53

Can you imagine if people like this ruled the world?

FadedRed · 25/03/2026 10:54

Amazing person.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/03/2026 10:56

Just brilliant 👏 💕

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 25/03/2026 10:57

So glad there's a thread on this!

What a guy. He deserves every bit of the praise coming his way.

Kind, empathetic, selfless.

canklesmctacotits · 25/03/2026 11:52

He was with him for hours and hours. Amazing.

He said if the thing blew up further from the hospital doors it would be just the two of them who died - that’s bravery. He did also say he was struggling with his own mental health and something flippant about how he was going that way himself anyway. So to recognize yourself in someone else and THEN say it would just be the two of us rather than the entire ward” is double bravery imo. He was fully, totally prepared to give his life to save others.

I cried actual tears when I got to the bit when he said the fellow was probably a decent guy just having a bad day at a terrible time. We never get to hear that side of things.

Megsdaughter · 25/03/2026 12:14

What a wonderful lad. Having his own difficulties, but noticing somebody else was.

Then to realise what the other one was going to do and to stay and talk him down.

A gentle soul with a heart so brave. If tgere were only more in the world like him, it wouldnt be in the state it is.

You deserve so much young man, and other men need to pay attention to him.

PuppyMonkey · 25/03/2026 12:18

I suspect some big movie studio is already eyeing up the rights to tell this fantastic story. Brilliant.

Ilovesshopping · 25/03/2026 12:27

What a guy, truly deserved.

scrivette · 25/03/2026 12:30

I read this earlier - what a brave man. It’s so nice to see something positive in the news.

He was there for so long - I can’t imagine how he felt.

Kdobelda · 25/03/2026 12:41

Outstanding. Glad he is being recognised

CurlewKate · 25/03/2026 12:43

I’d like to see Samir Zitouni getting some sort of award too….

Nibbits · 25/03/2026 12:52

Wow, what a man, so selfless and brave beyond belief. And such a good, kind soul.

^I agree, what an extraordinary story. So deserving of the George Medal.

MrsMitford3 · 25/03/2026 13:57

Wow.

Am in floods after reading the link that @powershowerforanhour posted of their conversation.

This is incredibly heroic and I hope that Nathan has a long and happy life.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/03/2026 14:01

gannett · 25/03/2026 12:56

Thanks.
What an extraordinary story - true strength and courage.

MikeRafone · 25/03/2026 14:04

That is what bravery is about and that man is extremely brave

GoodThingsAlways · 25/03/2026 14:31

What a remarkable human being. I noted he has cystic fibrosis 😢 He has not spoken publicly about the event - utterly selfless. And what a great way to understand the disturbed mind of the terrorist. I can’t believe what I’ve just read.
