Phone number when you don't wish to give it?

Does anyone know please, if there might be a fake number to give on those forms where you have to give it, to receive insurance quotes etc? Not official forms of course. Happy to be contacted by email but I really do not wish to give my number every time! It's private, plus I have a slight speech impediment too and rarely speak by phone.

just Change the last few numbers

49mumof6 · 24/03/2026 10:58

Put 07123456789 the 07 will register it as a mobile number and a very small chance this is actually someone’s number

NoisyMonster678 · 24/03/2026 10:58

Yeah its Truecall38 033388888888

examadmin · 24/03/2026 10:59

I just change it slightly. Or if you dont want to do that, put something that meets the "criteria" such as 07123456789.

Parsleyforme · 24/03/2026 11:09

I also change mine slightly, usually the last number or two. But then feel bad for the person who will probably keep getting calls asking for me!

PennySweeet · 24/03/2026 11:12

I've always given a very old mobile number I had years ago.

just Change the last few numbers

But then some other poor bugger gets all your unwanted phone calls.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/03/2026 11:19

Just make one up, simple as that. The 07xxx part of the number I’ll use from my mobile number, the other 6 numbers are random.

If it ends up being a real number, we’ll, very sad, never mind, at least it’s not mine.

dailyconniptions · 24/03/2026 11:22

I wish there was a standard one that when they rang it, it said "this person does not wish to leave their number." Rather than bother some other bugger!

Oh no, Truecall didn't work. 😞

07777777777 always works for me. This is definitely not someone's number!

Ofcom have a range of numbers ( land and mobile)that are fake, for use in fiction and TV priductions. Google:

A cafe I use asks for a phone number. I just make one up. This is not for bookings, just if you turn up,

It reminds me of the old "track and trace"

Please don't give my number out - I'm fed up getting so many random callers.

😂😂😂

Tillow4ever · 24/03/2026 12:40

Maybe I should start a business where I “buy” a phone number and basically sell the right for people to use it this way - maybe £1 one off cost. I reckon enough people would be happy to pay a quid to have a genuine number that could be used and know that no-one else is going to be pestered (it will be on a PAYG sim that’s never activated or something).

I often try that and it won't accept it. 😞

I'd love someone to set it up. So there'd be a recorded message when it's rung saying caller prefers not to give out number. Please email instead.

I just switch out the last two digits. Sorry to whoever has that phone number 😅

Don't do this. I keep getting calls and texts for a woman who has done this with my number. I've even had debt collectors ringing for her. I actually tracked her down on Facebook piecing together bits of information and contacted her. I was very polite and I said I was concerned she may not receive important correspondence. She told me her number which is 1 digit different to mine. When the debt collectors rang I had no qualms giving them the correct number. It's really annoying so don't do it.

itsthetea · 24/03/2026 15:09

A valid starting area code and then 000000 usually works

begonefoulclutter · 24/03/2026 15:31

Don't most of these forms have a section near the end where you can specify how you want to be contacted, whether by phone, email, post etc? Usually there's a list and you can tick or untick the relevant boxes. There's normally another one where you can also specify that you don't want to be added to their marketing database.

TheDandyLion · 24/03/2026 16:31

Veepn.com gives you a random phone number and 10minutemail.com gives you a random email address inbox which is active for 10 minutes.

Both are free and give you 10 mins free to receive emails or SMS for verification codes when you don't want to sign up to websites with your actual email or phone number.

Somersetbaker · 24/03/2026 17:20

I just give the number of my spare phone, which is on a different network, as it's turned off 99.9999% of the time, people calling it is not an issue.

igelkott2026 · 24/03/2026 17:33

There used to be a number you could use and when you called it there was a recorded message saying that you wanted to be contacted by email. I don't know what happened to it though. Maybe it broke some sort of regulatory rule.
