So is Botox just no big deal now? Like getting a spray tan?

I'm 32 and have been stressing over fine lines and aging recently. I know it's complete 1st world problems and aging is a privilege etc, but I suppose social media and other things have gotten into my head.

I see people on here, and Instagram and even a couple of people at work talk about botox and how amazing it is, so I booked a consultation at a beauty clinic type place that a colleague recommended.

The consultation was yesterday evening and I was surprised at how casual it all seemed. I said I was a bit anxious about it going wrong and looking weird, side effects and things and the woman just seemed baffled that I'd even be thinking about these things. In the end I decided not to book in and said I was feeling apprehensive and would mull it over and she basically seemed to regard me as though I was panicking over a manicure or a spray tan?

So now I'm wondering if I'm just being OTT, it's no big deal and I should just go for it and get rid of an insecurity, or if actually it is a big deal and the world is just going a bit mad?!

Would love to hear thoughts.

It’s no big deal. Just get it done by a
licensed medical professional who has
specific training in aesthetic injectables, and not necessarily a high street beauty place.

Oblivionnnnn · 21/03/2026 09:36

I have been getting it for a few years and never really regarded it as a big deal 🤷‍♀️

It’s quick, painless, very localised. But if you need to think it over then do, it’s up to you. And for what it’s worth, I honestly doubt you need it at 32. I didn’t get it till 42.

Geminispark · 21/03/2026 09:36

I started when I was about 40, I was really scared and panicking I would look odd etc, it was fine and now I don’t think anything about it and wouldn’t want to stop because I look so much better. I had a really lined forehead and now it looks great, I’ve been ID’d a few times.

I go to London and pay £400 every 4 months. I didn’t want to use someone crappy.

I dont see why it should be "a big deal" as long as you go to someone qualified and legit.

Botox has been around since the 1970s to successfully treat various medical conditions (including children with limb spasticity etc) and has a very safe profile when used correctly. I think people assume its a recent discovery because its become trendy but its not- its been around for decades and is well known.

GloiredeDijon · 21/03/2026 09:39

I was always terrified by the thought of botox but even my nhs consultant dermatologist ( who I see for melanoma) says it is perfectly safe in qualified hands.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/03/2026 09:41

I’m much older (53) and just started last year - I go to a woman who’s very well regarded and was a medical/hospital nurse before moving into aesthetics. I’m not a big fan of needles so yes, I was apprehensive the first time, but it’s much less painful than getting a needle at the dentist!

I go every four months now and it just makes me look less knackered and menopausal.

beadystar · 21/03/2026 10:28

I started last summer at 42 and felt like you at first but it’s been great. I’ve had it twice now. I go to a proper clinic and a highly recommended practitioner though, wouldn’t have trusted someone random.

Lottapianos · 21/03/2026 10:34

I'm 46, very vain and invested in my appearance. I'm not interested in Botox, it feels like a step too far for me. I also have no idea how people afford it! I know plenty of other women who don't have Botox so it's certainly not something that 'everyone' is doing

XiCi · 21/03/2026 10:43

Yes, its no big deal. Ive been getting botox in my 11s for years now and think absolutely nothing of going for my annual top ups. Its quick, painless and no downtime.

I do think its natural to be hesitant on your first appointment though and its right that you ask questions. The practitioner doesn't sound professional at all to just bat your questions away and make you feel stupid for asking them. If you want to go ahead I'd find a recommendation for somewhere else.

kiki847 · 21/03/2026 10:47

It’s not quite like a spray tan, it does need to be prescribed. But yeah it’s no big deal. I started at 36.

Cakewon · 21/03/2026 11:04

I think it is a big deal. I have wondered if it’s worth it. I look at people on tv etc who have maybe overdone it and think they don’t look anywhere near their actual age which seems odd. I worry that it will make my looks worse when I am older. I know people who have it done and look better than they did when they were young!

decorationday · 21/03/2026 11:14

You're 32! If you think you need to get junk injected into your healthy face because of "ageing" then you're spending too much time either on social media or around people with unnatural, modified bodies.

I think it is a big deal and it is incredibly sad to me how many people have rushed to tell you it's totally fine - nay desirable - to inject junk into your face.

You are young and beautiful as you are. It is disturbing that women are led to believe they need to do stuff like this to themselves. You don't.

Of course the woman you went to see who sells this junk for a living was trying to make out it was normal and trivial. She wants your money and the long term income stream because once you start doing this you're going to give her thousands of pounds over the long term. All for what?

I think your gut instinct was right and it's sad that people are undermining that and manipulating you.

decorationday · 21/03/2026 11:16

Most women don't get junk injected into their faces.

Spinningnewbie · 21/03/2026 11:23

I've been having Botox since i was 38, now 50. It's worth it if you want to look fresher but 32 is too young in my opinion. At 50 i look 40 but nutrition is also key and oil your skin daily . My neck is tight and wrinkle free so the daily Almond oil has worked! I've haf a strict skin routine since i was 16.

You are better off making sure you drink at least 2 to 3 litres of water a day and keeping in tip top shape nutritionally and exercising to keep blood circulation to the max.

Shithotlawyer · 21/03/2026 11:23

I think a spray tan IS a big deal! And eyebrow threading and eyelash tinting and skin peels. Botox is ludicrous.

They are all utterly unnecessary, don't make a blind bit of difference to most people's overall appearance. Have a glass of water and a nap and go for a jog, slap on a bit of moisturiser then get on with your wild and precious life.

Oblivionnnnn · 21/03/2026 11:25

Junk 🤣

It’s a prescribed drug. They’ve not hoovered up the juice from the bottom of the bin with a tiny syringe.

Igiveyouthemoon · 21/03/2026 11:25

I do all of those things and still get Botox.

Having Botox doesn’t mean I am not enjoying my wild and precious life 🤭

Yes, people who want beauty treatments never drink water or go for a jog. It’s in all the medical studies.

Arlanymor · 21/03/2026 11:27

I mean putting a neurotoxin into your face is a big deal. Isn’t it? My best friend gets it done and acts like it’s nothing. I have never considered it. We’re all different. If I ever meet him on the same day he will text: “See you after my poison appointment! Probably around noon!”

kinkytoes · 21/03/2026 11:27

Each batch of botox is tested on mice OP, so you might want to consider that too.

I hate the idea of animal testing anyway but I really don't think this is a good use of mice 😔

Does it work and did you have deep lines before you started? Did you see a big difference? I heard you can get necrotising whatever and it freaked me out but I’ve have elevens since I was like 12 and I can’t stand them but am scared!

Oblivionnnnn · 21/03/2026 11:28

Necrotising whatever?! 🤣

love do a bit of reading of sensible research and make a decision.

EEHHH · 21/03/2026 11:29

Its not something I would want.
But if you want it get it done who cares what others think, if its going to make you feel better about yourself why not.
You dont need anyone's approval, input or permission.

franklymydearscarlett · 21/03/2026 11:37

This is really interesting. I am pretty sure most of my social circle are getting this or fillers and some of them look terrible (late 40s, attractive women).

I’m 48 and genuinely have great skin but have Asian skin and it does age differently. I haven’t felt the need to have Botox but I will definitely consider it in my 50s. I work in the city and unfortunately these things do make a difference.

on the other hand I spend a fortune on my hair - weekly blow dries and trying to keep greys away - so we all have our “thing”. I have no need to get a spray tan and I hate getting my nails done. I spend money on my clothes and hair.
