Has anyone successfully stopped snoring?

DH snores. It is really bad. He isn’t overweight. Has tried a few things - nose strips, a mouth guard type thing, a visit to the dr. Dentist suggests a £500 plate - but no guarantee it will work… we don’t want to sleep in separate beds (but to be fair to him, he will do that whenever I ask him to, if I have a big day ahead etc)

Anyone know what the silver bullet is?

My Dh started sleeping on 3 pillows to help with reflux, but a side bonus was it really reduced his snoring. Worth a try maybe - although it sounds like you’ve already tried a lot.

We haven’t tried pillows so will give that a go! Thanks

CPAP machine. The only thing that stopped my dh snoring.

Not a fix to the snoring... but have you tried sleeping with one of those eye masks with built in headphones and blocking out the snoring with white noise or brown noise? Ever since having DS I have become a really light sleeper and always sleep listening to brown noise in headphones now. I find it effective at blocking out external noises/internal thoughts.

Rockfordpeach · 20/03/2026 21:23

Yes, i used to snore so badly it would wake my children in other rooms. I tried mouth taping a year ago and DH says my snoring has almost completely stopped. I actually really enjoy mouth taping after the first week of getting used to it

Wildgoat · 20/03/2026 21:24

Ear plugs, as long as I’m asleep first I don’t hear him at all, and we were on the point of divorce,

Cazziebo · 20/03/2026 21:27

Mouth tapes work for me. Can’t say I like it.

So you literally tape your mouth, so you can only breathe through your nose?

Whosaywhatnow · 20/03/2026 21:32

Have a look at proper tongue position - apparently your tongue should be touching the roof of your mouth (you can Google how to do it), when it's done properly you can only breathe through your nose which should reduce snoring (barring medical causes). You have to train your tongue during the day so it will hold this position even when you're asleep. Worth a shot for a couple of weeks as it's free.....

LewisFerrux · 20/03/2026 21:38

Mouth taper here. First time I tried I discovered a hitherto unknown drooling issue but then tried another brand and get on well with them. The only issue is waking up thirsty and thne knowing I'll have to retape if I have some water.

RunMeOver · 20/03/2026 21:41

Surgery - uvuloplasty.

Worked for me, when all else failed.

Yeah. Use surgical tape of you can get specialist tape

Doggodoggo · 20/03/2026 21:46

My late DH snored SO loudly. Nothing worked, we tried everything. Even sleeping in separate rooms I could hear him. Nothing drowned him out. We eventually converted a downstairs room into a bedroom for him as otherwise I would have literally gone insane from lack of sleep. The lack of snoring is the only thing I now love about being on my own!

SquallyShowersLater · 20/03/2026 21:52

Yes, me. Was always a bad snorer. I can't quite pinpoint what changed but it could be one of several things, all of which happened roughly simultaneously.

I used to be quite overweight and now I am slim.

I had Invisilign moulded braces which I had to wear at night and now I wear a nighttime retainer long term.

I used to drink maybe two or three large glasses of wine per night, every night and now I have about four glasses per week and never more than one glass in an evening.

So, it could be that I've lost weight. It could be that I drink less. It could be the wearing of the mouthguard somehow changes how I breath and the position of my tongue in my mouth when I am sleeping. It could be a combination of any of those. But whatever it is, it's done the trick.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/03/2026 22:20

ENT consult. Possible deviated septum. Possible CPAP machine needed as well.

IHateAlzheimers · 20/03/2026 22:23

Really started going at it in the gym, focusing on building muscle rather than cardio, I am a little lighter but the difference is mostly in muscle mass and my snoring has markedly decreased (as reported by a very relieved DS who could hear me through the walls).

RudolphTheReindeer · 20/03/2026 22:25

My dh's snoring reduces dramatically when he exercises regularly and he sometimes uses a sinus clearing type spray which helps.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 20/03/2026 22:55

Yep, I was diagnosed diabetic and promptly lost 40lbs to try and sort it out. It worked, and as a nice side effect I no longer get elbowed in the ribs for snoring!

PennyLongLegs · 20/03/2026 23:00

Silver bullet is a separate bedroom. I love my DH but I can’t have constant broken sleep, it was breaking me! I’d wake up, either with his sleep machine blowing full blast in my face, or him snoring and me having to shove home over onto his back. Several times a night. Separate bedroom, we now both sleep much better!

taratill · 20/03/2026 23:09

For those who are saying mouthtape, can you recommend a product please?

MashThePatriarchy · 20/03/2026 23:13

I've not heard of mouth tape. My dd is desperate for me to stop and I've tried most things.

SkaterGrrrrl · 20/03/2026 23:14

I could have written your OP.

We were about to move into separate rooms, when he got one of those wedge pillows. They are about £70 but worth every penny. His snoring has stopped and I can sleep. You can also buy a travel version that folds up.

CloudsAreFluffy · 20/03/2026 23:14

Im a 5 feet tall chunky build female. I snored really badly (tbf even when i was skinny.) Later years I also stopped breathing in my sleep. A CPAP machine sorted that and i dont wake up with a headache. Not a sexy look though.....but i do wake up which is the main thing. Get a sleep study done.
