Ryanair 10kg priority cabin bag, what have you used?

Please help me find a suitcase or bag that you have personal experience of getting on to a Ryanair flight as the 10kg priority cabin bag without then making you pay more at the gate.

My 18 year old is traveling alone and despite having a rucksack of the correct dimensions I have visions of him over stuffing it and falling fowl or the sometimes overzealous Ryanair staff at the gate.

So ideally something that holds it shape and can't be outside the dimensions whatever DS does to it.

You have to check that the wheels are included in the measurement

I just use a big rucksack, like the sort you take trekking. I’ve never had any trouble or been asked to put my bag in the measuring thing.

Just measure it before you leave home. It’s very easy to do. Wear your bulkiest clothing, jumpers, walking boots or trainers, etc so doesn’t need to fit in the bag.

I’ve always complied with the rules but never been pulled over and told to check it against the dreaded box. I’ve never seen anyone get into an argument either. They def do happen but the vast majority of people comply with the rules and don’t get any aggro

I saw a woman kicking off because she couldn’t take her huge case in the cabin. She was bizarre, really didn’t get it! Poor staff were going around in circles trying to explain that it needed to go in the hold. I think she misunderstood ‘priority’.

Just to add, they can check the weight at the gate if they're suspicious. They have a hand held weight thing. I know because it happened to me! I think it's the wheels on cases that catch a lot of people out. Most luggage descriptions don't include wheels in the sizes I think.

Last year travelling with Ryanair, 1 staff member was going along the gate queue and pulling people out to check the size/weight of their bags on the checker thing. It seemed to be only hard cases they were checking though 🤔

Got one for £30 on Amazon from a brand called Lugg. Not super quality but perfect size (55x35x23cm). There are lots that size. I wouldn't mess with Ryanair since the bins are quite tight and if you do sneak on an oversized one it can be tricky to make it fit.

Ryanair 10kg priority bag sizes are 55x40x20 so that wouldn't work unfortunately.

You can check in a 10kg bag on Ryanair (for a fee). The check in scales is only interested in the weight, it doesn't care about size. So weigh before you go, check it in. No hassle. I always check my bags in. I couldn't be bothered with the stress of worrying whether the bag is the right size or not. It's worth the money for me.

Of course it might not suit your son, and he might want to leg it off the plane and straight out, but believe me by the time he gets through passport control the bag will be waiting for him.

I've also started checking a 10 kg bag (or occasionally a 20 kg one). In my experience, it's been cheaper to check the 10 kg bag than buy priority and the 20 kg one hasn't been much more (eg £35 for priority vs £30 and £40 for a checked bag).

So while I might have to wait a little while, but never more than a few minutes to collect my bag at the other end, there's no size limit, I don't need to worry about the liquids limits, don't have to drag a wheelie case through security, round the airport and on and off the plane and don't have to fight for space in the overhead locker. So well worth it IMO.

A lot of the time the people who have to pay extra have bags that are obviously too big, so only have themselves to blame. You'd have to have spent the last couple of decades under a rock to not know Ryanair's reputation about charging people who don't stick to their clearly stated rules.

Old Tripp I think or Samsonite small soft case. Burgundy. Can’t get it anymore.

I might get this as a back up, thanks!
