Ryanair 10kg priority cabin bag, what have you used?

Please help me find a suitcase or bag that you have personal experience of getting on to a Ryanair flight as the 10kg priority cabin bag without then making you pay more at the gate.

My 18 year old is traveling alone and despite having a rucksack of the correct dimensions I have visions of him over stuffing it and falling fowl or the sometimes overzealous Ryanair staff at the gate.

So ideally something that holds it shape and can't be outside the dimensions whatever DS does to it.

I’ve just used a cabin size suitcase that fitted their dimensions, but with fairly rigid sides. Mine is a Tripp one. Not had an issue yet, but I have seen people pulled up before with more holdall-style bags so I think you’re right to consider something more rigid.

KitsyWitsy · 19/03/2026 16:25

I got one on amazon recently. Just put the size in and 'ryanair' then picked one. It was only £30 but there were cheaper ones.

Yes that was my original plan but I have heard people getting caught out by this as despite the advertised dimensions being correct they don't quite fit. That's why I was looking for one that someone had actually reliably used.

A solid Trip suitcase on the limit of the size requirement - also, as it's hand luggage at no point is there scope for it to be weighed - I travel in and out of Luton short haul regularly and have NEVER had my hand luggage weighed, as the only scales (to my knowledge) are at the check-in desk which I don't go near - none at the gate or at security. Size checked absolutely, but not weight.

P.S the reason that people get pulled is because the over-all size has to include the wheels - a lot of the older case dimensions didn't allow for this and as such they are technically too big.

TryingAgain2026 · 19/03/2026 16:30

I've used one of these for a weeks holiday! i was picked to have my bag checked at boarding!! It passed the test - much to their disappointment . Mine was a black one and it looks like they have changed but dimensions still seem ok

A Tripp one that included 'right size for Ryanair' (or similar) and dimensions in the description. The staff were very zealous at boarding so I was glad I hadn't risked it

I hope that doesn't happen to me! It's a cheap girls trip I'm going on and I'd be happy to check a bag but I don't want to be the only one so I am just going with it. I do not know how I will manage to get everything in it.

Maybe look at the reviews on any you see.

KitsyWitsy · 19/03/2026 16:36

Isn't that Tripp one bigger than the specified dimensions? 40 30 20? does he definitely have the larger cabin bag on his ticket? I only have the small one for my trip.

DuckyLuck · 19/03/2026 16:37

I’m at Krakow airport right now, waiting to board a Ryanair flight home. I have a Tripp and we sailed through boarding the other end. No opportunity for them to weigh or measure my bag - quite surprised really. I have 10kg, Priority tickets and all is good.

Giddykiddy · 19/03/2026 16:39

i use a leather backpack that squishes down quite well - never had a problem and can manage a few days with it

Trumpisacunt · 19/03/2026 16:39

I got the 'it' one from argos when it was half price .its incredibly light and we'll made https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8796574?clickPR=plp:9:15
Think dunhelm currently have it on offer for £30

7238SM · 19/03/2026 16:46

I use this because its so incredibly light, only 1.9kg! https://www.argos.co.uk/product/2654454?clickPR=plp:22:56&_gl=13rb1ng_upMQ.._gaMTIxMzQzNzM4My4xNzczOTM4MzYz_ga_JWCPD5SJK1*czE3NzM5MzgzNjIkbzEkZzAkdDE3NzM5MzgzNjIkajYwJGwwJGgxNDUwNTI1MzQ3

  • Size H56, W34, D20cm and this includes the wheels

Just checking the Ryanair sizes it says:
55cm x 40cm x 20cm, so yes, mine above is 1cm too tall, but its also narrower. Touch wood, I've never had a problem thus far. 😬

stackhead · 19/03/2026 16:53

We use the solid Tripp small case, fits perfectly. The holdall, soft rucksack type of the bags are the ones that are usually pulled for checking.

ERthree · 19/03/2026 17:41

Lugg do a cabin case with removable wheels.

Oh Lord, please don't muddy the waters, threads on here are plagued with bad advice at the best of times. OP asked about the 10kg carry on. You are talking about the free underseat bag anyone can carry on, which is a different thing all together.

damelza · 19/03/2026 17:47

You can check in a 10kg bag on Ryanair (for a fee). The check in scales is only interested in the weight, it doesn't care about size. So weigh before you go, check it in. No hassle. I always check my bags in. I couldn't be bothered with the stress of worrying whether the bag is the right size or not. It's worth the money for me.

Of course it might not suit your son, and he might want to leg it off the plane and straight out, but believe me by the time he gets through passport control the bag will be waiting for him.

It's the check in part he is trying to avoid.

I use Modo Starlight by Roncato on 50+ flights each year, many with Ryanair and easyJet. It fits all hand luggage size requirements (10kg priority type). As PP said, no need for him to be too careful with the weight as they are never really checked.

Any rigid small case will do. Those people you see saying they had issues with the Amazon cases that had the “approved by Ryanair” label, have probably booked the wrong hand luggage option altogether.

The basic allowance is 40x30x20, this is included in all ticket fares. Additionally, you can add a 10kg case within 55x40x20, as your son has done. So he could take a small case on wheels, and a normal sized rucksack as long as it’s not overstuffed.

Littletreefrog · 19/03/2026 17:53

Any particular reason? I know people think that they will jump off the plane and straight onto a bus to destination. But as I said above, by the time you get through passport and walk the "five km" from plane to immigration, the bag is on the carousel waiting. It's worth the cost IMO, and in all the years I've been doing it this way I've never had a bag go missing.

But I get it that some prefer to keep their bags with them on board. I've no suggestions for luggage as it doesn't matter for me, but it's in or around the dimensions for cabin overhead cases anyway. FWIW I use Tripp brand.

Namechangeforthis88 · 19/03/2026 21:32

We went to a decent sized TK Maxx with a tape measure.

We had changes where there wasn't enough time for hold luggage.

But these are both recommendations for people looking to find a suitable 40x30x20 bag that they can put under the seat in front of them, for free.

OP’s son is allowed a case that’s almost double as large as the links you refer to.

It’s no wonder people get caught up in hand luggage confusion and get overcharged at the gate by Ryanair, when they are unable to simply read carefully what the rules or dimensions mentioned are (in this case, OP was very clear as are low-cost airlines on their websites).

We did Ryanair priority recently and went for the cabin max Metz backpacks. Really spacious, light and comfortable.

Edited

I've just purchased a couple of cabinmax bags after quite a few recommendations on here. Not used them on Ryanair yet but from previous thread I saw people didn't have issues.
You can buy them on amazon as well however I found them cheaper on cabinmax.com and they did a welcome discount. Delivery was quick and they look well made.
