Samphire

A totally waste of time post, but I've always wanted to try samphire. I ordered some with my grocery delivery and I've just cooked it for lunch with a fish cake and new potatoes.

Bleurgh! The disappointment! It is so, so salty! I thought it would be a bit like broccoli, I didn't think it through. Sea vegetable = sea = salt!

Anyway, I've got half a bag left if anyone wants it?!

I love samphire! It’s lovely in butter with poached or scrambled eggs. You don’t need to season the eggs as the salt from the samphire does that.

Yes this is how we like it.

I've only read your posts OP and not the entire thread.
I don't add salt to food and often find everyday things too salty to me. Somehow, I love samphire though, even without soaking!

I get it from Sainburys or my local fishmonger- which is always FAR fresher/nicer than the supermarkets. Peak UK season is Jun-Sep and other times of the year it comes from abroad. Sometimes of very 'sticky'. I mean a hard, central stick so you need to suck off the outer, softer leaves. Not the best and that is when I know its not in season.

I wash it off, and lightly fry with butter/garlic and serve as a side to fish. I've also made a few salads with it. I think its the iodine I like, because apparently veg in the UK is now very low in iodine and its an essential element we all need, especially for thyroid health.

I have samphire with steak and chips…it’s surf and turf!

DinoLil · 20/03/2026 02:40

@7238SMI'm not sure about sucking leaves but thanks for the season tip. It was a bit stick like.

Anyway, latest update. Its just after 2.30am and I was feeling hungry. I've given the remaining samphire a hard stare and had a nibble on it raw.

More bleurgh!!

I'm heading back to a custard cream which was my original target. Samphire will have to be patient for now.

Gotta love the menopause!!

It grows all over the coast in England, below/near the tide mark. We have it in Devon and Cornwall too, and I've picked it in the south of France as well, but Mediterranean samphire is extremely salty.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/03/2026 09:25

I’ve not had samphire for years other than very small amounts on posh food once or twice where they used it as a salty garnish like you might with olives rather than a pile of it. But we did used to eat it sometimes when DD was small - it was the first green vegetable she would eat.😂

DinoLil · 20/03/2026 13:38

This is just so fascinating. I've seen it growing as I live by the coast. I was tempted to pick some but looked at my dog and thought, maybe not!

So I don't like it raw. Now I have the last bit in the bag soaking for tea tonight.

Who knew that a green stalky thing could be so exciting?!

@ErrolTheDragon I did have a pile of it tbh. Maybe that's where I went wrong. But I'd happily eat my way through a pile of olives!

Just following up. Samphire is not for me!

So what do I do instead? Ah yes. That will be buy a bag of Korean seaweed snack stuff.

Nope. I don't like that either! 😆
