Samphire

A totally waste of time post, but I've always wanted to try samphire. I ordered some with my grocery delivery and I've just cooked it for lunch with a fish cake and new potatoes.

Bleurgh! The disappointment! It is so, so salty! I thought it would be a bit like broccoli, I didn't think it through. Sea vegetable = sea = salt!

Anyway, I've got half a bag left if anyone wants it?!

We all love it - when the girls were little we called it green twiglets. Is brilliant with a creamy dip...

Hehehe @MummaMummaJumma Tbh, get your tiny violins at the ready, I'm disabled and my carer was here when my shopping was delivered. She literally flagged down the Waitrose van!

Anyway, she wanted to put everything away (aka have a nose) and I said I'd rather do it because I like to look at the stuff and dates and all that. She said she'd get everything out on the worktop for me to sort. SAMPHIRE?!?! she said! She also thought it was a girls name!

Haha I’m very glad it’s not just me! If you ever hear someone shouting out for their child - “Samphire”, you’ll know I got the inspiration from this post lol

One of my favourite vegetables! I dry fry it and eat it as it is. Love the crunchy saltiness.

CrowsInMyGarden · 19/03/2026 17:21

Ha I thought you were going to suggest it as a baby girl’s name. I like it (to eat)

Picoloangel · 19/03/2026 17:25

It was a childhood staple for us in Norfolk. We used to eat it boiled a then covered it vinegar. I love it! Also blew my mind when I realised it was a foody treat. Occasionally treat myself to it in Waitrose.

Tintackedsea · 19/03/2026 17:26

I mix it with broccoli or green beans and it seasons them. Very tasty but quite salty on its own.

HelenaWilson · 19/03/2026 17:33

How fearful
And dizzy ‘tis to cast one’s eyes so low!
The crows and choughs that wing the midway air
Show scarce so gross as beetles. Halfway down
Hangs one that gathers samphire - dreadful trade;
Methinks he seems no bigger than his head.
The fishermen that walk upon the beach
Appear like mice.....

Princessofpumpkins · 19/03/2026 17:36

Love samphire. Fry very briefly in butter and eat with scallops, squeeze lemon over, fresh crusty bread to mop buttery juices.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 19/03/2026 17:38

Count me as another samphire lover. I will eat it in any format, with any food. Particularly love it with prawns - but I am a huge lover of salty food anyway.

begonefoulclutter · 19/03/2026 17:39

Ooh, now then. This is something I've always fancied trying, after a friend telling me years ago that he'd picked some on the north Norfolk coast and had it with his dinner. Seasonal delicacy apparently.

ExitPursuedByABare · 19/03/2026 17:40

Love Samphire. But then I love salt so 🤷‍♀️

elephantoverthehill · 19/03/2026 17:42

I like samphire but find it can be a bit woody at the ends, are you supposed to eat it like tiny asparagus? I remember a R4 afternoon play about a man and his wife on holiday, he was obsessed with foraging for samphire, his wife got so fed up with him going on and on about samphire she ended up pushing him down a cliff!

OntheupsoIam · 19/03/2026 17:44

Oooo samphire! Rinse well then cook gently in lots of butter. Add black pepper and lemon juice. Delicious!

daisychain01 · 19/03/2026 17:48

Love samphire. It's full of iodine for thyroid function and amino acids for muscle growth and repair.

its good in a stir fry with bean shoots mange tout, sugar snaps, tofu and mushrooms which are quite bland, so balance the saltiness of samphire.

They do seem to have a season, when they're juicy and tender then you get batches of them that are very sharp ended.

BreatheAndFocus · 19/03/2026 17:54

I love samphire! It’s lovely in butter with poached or scrambled eggs. You don’t need to season the eggs as the salt from the samphire does that.

BananaSkinShoes · 19/03/2026 17:54

Oh I bloody love samphire. We eat so much of it.

No idea how to make it delicious as I don’t cook, but my husband makes it perfectly.

LysistrataSusanCarter · 19/03/2026 18:05

It’s delicious! Best eaten on Morston marshes, with grilled sausages and warm white wine. Muddy feet essential.

DinoLil · 19/03/2026 18:22

Bloomin heck, look at you lot!!

I can't be dealing the rest of the half bag today but I might not sleep tonight in anticipation of tomorrow!

There's a lot of Norfolk references. Is it a local thing?

And @HelenaWilson that's beautiful

lol at the play! @elephantoverthehill growing up we discarded the tougher rough woodier bits at the bottom and kind of slipped it off the inside stems, a bit like taking gloves off

Love it. Our local fishmonger sells it.

Ditto here 😋

Villanellesproudmum · 19/03/2026 20:13

Love it, Waitrose sell it.
