I just caught the trailer for this on youtube, it looks wonderful! They've clearly spent millions.

I'm in Australia, it's out in cinemas 26 March, 27th in the UK.

But damn, I live in a small town and our local cinema is closed for renovations for months, I won't get to see it (sobs).

God I adore those books. Please if anyone sees the movie please come and give a review, please pretty please X

I’m taking my young niece and nephew to the cinema on Sunday with my Mum to watch it. Can’t wait - it was one of my favourite books as a kid!

Mummadeze · 25/03/2026 06:23

Am going on Saturday. Also couldn’t wait. I loved all the books so much.

HoraceCope · 25/03/2026 06:39

i loved these books but it has been a long time since i read them!
the trailer looks really good

HoraceCope · 25/03/2026 06:41

for some reason i never read them to my dc, completely forgot - i think they may still be in my dm's house so they may have read them there

I love Nicola Coughlan but she's not dinky enough to be Silky.. and Moon Face without a moon for a face.. and Dame Snap.. and the ladder to the lands looks ridiculously long.. and there's a wheel of lands (which makes it seem like there's a limit!!)

BUT - I adore Andrew Garfield.. its obviously got a great team behind it.. Saucepan Man is my favourite and looks great..

Wonder if I can persuade my teens to come with me 🤔

Oh but the lands are on a sort of rotation (in the books) but there are sometimes rogue lands that slip into the cycle (handy for plot twists and mild peril).

I will definitely see it, but may have to manage my expectations due to the crescent shaped moon face and my (40+ years on) fully-formed vision of the world.

I’ll be happy as long as the dastardly Dame Slap isn’t renamed to Dame Snap, like she is in the modern wordings.

This! I loved The Magic Faraway Tree but my gast was flabbered when I read one of the newer versions and read Dame Snap! She just tells off the kids crossly?!
She's supposed to be scary and give them a slap!
😡

Why would you even think they might’ve done that? 🤷‍♀️

Mumsnet, innit.
Absolutely bloody obsessed to the point it's all some can think of.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 25/03/2026 09:26

My mum disapproved of Enid Blyton so I had no childhood history with The Magic Faraway Tree, but after a bout of insomnia as an adult I bought the books on audible to listen to at night. I actually really enjoyed Jacqueline Wilson's updated version too, the Christmas one is my all time comfort read (The Land of Christmas....).

Because I don't have expectations formed in childhood I can more readily accept updated versions of things so I'm really looking forward to seeing the film!

I loved these books as a kid and still mentally reference them often- last night I felt sleepy when downstairs but by the time I’d shut up the house and gone to bed I’d woken up again, and I always think to myself “Ah rats, I’ll have to wait until the Land of Sleep comes round again” 😂

I don’t know if I want to see the movie, I loved those books so much. I need others to go see it for me. But I REALLY wish they’d made this film 30 odd years ago!

Edited

Ahhhh I’m going to start saying/thinking that, too. Lovely!

Jessica Gunning is playing Dame Washalot. I've thought she was brilliant since I saw her in the Victoria Wood film That Day We Sang.

Is That Day We Sang any good?

Anyone been to seen this yet?

Dr13Hadley · 28/03/2026 14:26

I loved these books so much I read them to my DSs when they were little and they listened to the audiobooks to help them sleep sometimes (recommended, Kate Winslet is the narrator). My nearly 13yo DS yesterday asked me if we could go and see the film! 😊

Dooodaaaaadooo · 28/03/2026 14:43

I loved these books as a child but completely forgot about them when mine were growing up! Am going to make sure I read these books again to my Grandchildren.

I’ve just been to watch it, I loved the books but I was disappointed so much could of been left out, it was only the angry pixie that was perfect,

Oh no! Hope this isn't a big disappointment!

It’s ALL different. I was a bit disappointed. I wish they kept these things simpler and more magical.

I wasnt too keen on the angry pixie. They tried too hard to be moral and make points. The teenage girl was very irritating (I just didnt feel they needed to do all that in this movie. They could have had a lovely trilogy but I feel they did this one film and that’s it.

I’m a big Tim burton fan maybe if it had been one of his it may of been better

I thought it was lovely and poignant but down to earth. Typical Victoria Wood really. Very well acted by Imelda Staunton and michael ball

I’m sad that moon face doesn’t look like a moon. Excited about the rest of it though

I pictured him as he looked on the cover of my books, big round full moon head 😩

VimtoDemon · 28/03/2026 19:49

That said, I still can't wait to see it! 😜

raxel · 29/03/2026 11:15

I saw it yesterday and absolutely loved it. These were some of my favourite books as a kid and I was worried the film couldn’t live up to them. It is different from the books, so best to treat it as something based on but separate from them, rather than expecting a faithful adaptation. I thought it was a charming, funny and warm-hearted movie in its own right though. Very nostalgic and managed to capture the books’ sense of magic while bringing the whole thing into a context that will actually be recognisable to kids now. Highly recommend!

I absolutely loved The Faraway Tree books when I was a little girl and re-read them many times. Visually it looks spectacular and must admit I'm massively relieved they haven't made one of the children in the process of 'transitioning.'

You’ve seen other mainstream children’s movies based on books where child characters have been trans? Of which movies are you thinking?

Surely you’re not one of those fools who mutters ‘woke’ about everything and thinks ‘you can’t say anything racist these days?’
