I just caught the trailer for this on youtube, it looks wonderful! They've clearly spent millions.

I'm in Australia, it's out in cinemas 26 March, 27th in the UK.

But damn, I live in a small town and our local cinema is closed for renovations for months, I won't get to see it (sobs).

God I adore those books. Please if anyone sees the movie please come and give a review, please pretty please X

I adored the book as a child and this looks magical, can’t wait to see it.

I actually like that they’ve updated the world to modern times, it looks wonderful 🥰

Arraminta · 19/03/2026 22:10

I absolutely loved The Faraway Tree books when I was a little girl and re-read them many times. Visually it looks spectacular and must admit I'm massively relieved they haven't made one of the children in the process of 'transitioning.'

Why would you even think they might’ve done that? 🤷‍♀️

usedtobeaylis · 19/03/2026 22:24

Oh my god I am desperately managing my expectations right now but I didn't know this was being made and I'm so excited! I LOVED The Faraway Tree and all the lands but Roundabout Land lived long in my memory. It was the first chapter book I read with/to my daughter too and we spent weeks making a big Faraway Tree picture with purple ribbon as the slide 😍

I agree Moonface not being a moon face is disappointing though!

SanFranBear · 19/03/2026 22:30

I love Nicola Coughlan but she's not dinky enough to be Silky.. and Moon Face without a moon for a face.. and Dame Snap.. and the ladder to the lands looks ridiculously long.. and there's a wheel of lands (which makes it seem like there's a limit!!)

BUT - I adore Andrew Garfield.. its obviously got a great team behind it.. Saucepan Man is my favourite and looks great..

Wonder if I can persuade my teens to come with me 🤔

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/03/2026 22:44

Dds loved the book - I never read it, but we’re having the Gdcs next weekend and have already booked to see it on the Sunday.

Please let this eventually turn up on Netflix 🙏

I am intrigued to watch it but in my head (and the book illustrations) Moonface is a tall skinny fellow with a moon for a face. And Silky is a dinky little fairy, not a small human size. So for me the casting is off.

Meredusoleil · 24/03/2026 07:31

My kids really want to see this as they loved the books when they were younger.

50nifty · 24/03/2026 07:35

I saw the trailer a couple of months ago.

I loved these books as a child. I'm so disappointed that anyone is brave enough to try and recreate in film. I don't think it can be done.

Nicola Coughlan is great in Derry girls and Bridgerton, but she's no Silky IMO.

MarchionessVonSausage · 24/03/2026 07:39

Yeah, I know!

There will be lots of things not true to the book. I have it on my lap and I want to see:

The Land of Dreams
The Land of Toys
A Shock for the Toys
The Land of Goodies (I think that one is in the movie)
The Land of the Old Woman
The Land of Magic Medicines
The Land of Tempers

The 1st book was The Enchanted Wood:

MoonFace gets in to trouble
Off to Dame Slap's School (yep, she is now Snap not Slap)
Silky's Clock is Very Clever
The Land of Birthdays (that was THE BEST)

Then the 3rd book was "The Folk of The Faraway Tree". I won't go on!

Looks good though!

Bad casting. Too knowing and modernised.
It looks awful

CrocsNotDocs · 18/03/2026 23:52

But Dame Slap was a bad guy and her slapping was part of her villain arc. Why water that down? The slapping was never approved in the original books- it was to show how mean she was.

Because by the time of the re-issues hitting children was illegal, rather than the painful but completely unsurprising punishment the children accepted it as in the original books? And it’s not just Dame Slap, the children are punished with ‘a good slapping’ by their parents, too. No film maker in 2026 is going to normalise adults hitting kids, whether or not the leave in a shoe or whatever.

I read this over and over as a child. 40yrs on, I'm not sure I'll remember all the characters, but I loved it at the time.

I recall asking the school librarian if they had any other books from Grid Blyton (as a 9yr old, her signature looked like Grid to me) and she said no, never heard of that author! 🙄

That’s hilarious and adorable!

I’m off to see it on Monday, using five year old ds as an excuse. Will report back.

AuntyAngela · 24/03/2026 07:46

I’m really looking forward to it—although I’m sure those of us raised on the original Enid Blyton (back before everything got a modern polish) will need to accept it will have a resemblance to the books.and not an accurate portrayal, otherwise we are setting ourselves up for disappointed.

That probably applies to the updated versions too (not read them) At this stage, I’ve accepted we’re never getting anything close to a fully accurate portrayal of any book. I’m still not over my sadness about the Fantastic Mr Fox film, it's a running joke at home how Im holding onto that grudge.

I’m sad that moon face doesn’t look like a moon. Excited about the rest of it though

Im sad about this too. I was a huge fan of these books as a child in the 80’s and still have them. I read them to all my kids. Moon face is on the covers and his face was indeed like a moon.

HuckleberryJam · 24/03/2026 07:51

I'm seeing it on Friday with adult dd, who I read the books to. I loved it as a child. Yes it won't be the same as the books, but judging by the amazing cast and who adapted it, it'll be great.

TulipsDaffsAndSunshine · 24/03/2026 07:53

Trying to persuade my 13yr old to come with me 🤣

MarchionessVonSausage · 24/03/2026 23:44

OK, I am stupidly excited. The cinema in my small town (in Australia) has completed its renovations and will be showing this for the easter school hols!

I just have to convince DS9 to come with me. He wasn't much fussed with the books. If not I will see it by myself.

I’ll be happy as long as the dastardly Dame Slap isn’t renamed to Dame Snap, like she is in the modern wordings.

My DC had some weird cartoon version on DVD (i think it came free with a newspaper) and she was called Dame Tickle. She tickled naughty children with her "big pink tickling feather"
I think I'd rather be slapped.

andIsaid · 25/03/2026 00:24

Gosh life is funny - this weekend I was telling dds about my favourite books (bar none) as a child - The Magic Wishing Chair. After that, it was the Famous Five all the way.

I spent hours sprawled on the floor reading Blyton. "Put that book down and go out and play" was commonly said - you would not hear that nowadays! 😁

Somehow though, I never read this one. I will definitely see the film.

canuckup · 25/03/2026 00:29

Crikey those royalties must be alright

BoredZelda · 25/03/2026 00:41

I read these books regularly as a child and 40 years later they were a staple of bedtime stories I read with my daughter. Safe to say, we’ve been waiting for this film since we first heard about it. We are enormously excited about the fact that it has been adapted by Simon Farnaby (of Horrible Histories, ghosts, yonderland fame). Our only disappointment is that it doesn’t also feature any/all of his mates Martha, Katy, Ben, Jim, Matt and Lawrence, but we love Claire Foy so that’s a bonus.

We are going to see it at the weekend.

Onemanwenttomo · 25/03/2026 05:17

I wonder if any of the elements of the Jacqueline Wilson remakes will be present?

In her books, the kids keep it all a secret and they sneak off there, conveniently time stops while they are there. All the lands are pleasant with very little anxiety about getting home or learning a lesson while there. She makes Moonface and Silky an item 🥴. Moonface is feckless and can't do magic properly without Silky's help. And at the end of one of them Moonface whines and persuades Silky to leave her true love (a Prince) in a land so she can return to the Faraway Tree and be "his" Silky and basically do all his cleaning forever more (this is after a pathetic show of fisticuffs) ... 0/10 do not recommend.

Hope the movie is better.
