DP stored petrol in conditioner bottle and it went in wash

I'm so angry with my DP.
I've just put a load of my washing in the washing machine, added washing gel and spotted the washing conditioner bottle. Grabbed it and started pouring the conditioner into the machine before instantly realising it wasn't conditioner as it was thin brown foul smelling liquid. I think probably around 3 tablespoons went in. Stopped immediately and took the bottle inside and said to my partner "what's wrong with this?" and my partner smelt it and started raising his voice saying it was petrol and oil mixed and he'd used the empty container to pour it into and it was my fault because he'd asked me out shopping yesterday if we had any fabric conditioner so my fault for not saying we were out!

Now he's stressing that the washing machine will be fuc*ed. And he's making it out that it's my fault. WTF??

Everyone knows you should never use old bottles for other items, I learned that in my COSHH training and told him so but it went down like a lead balloon!

How do we save the washing machine,? We've just taken all the clothes out and put it on a 30 degree 30 min wash. Will that be enough to dilute it so the next load of washing won't stink of petrol.

Think partner is upset due to it being Mothers Day and no Mum but even so, why are men so bloody moody??

Put it on a boil wash, the longest possible with the maxim of biological powder. You will need to do this multiple times 🫢

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 15/03/2026 13:45

Can’t comment on whether the machine is gone but your husband is totally in the wrong here and I cannot believe he’s trying to blame you. Who stores petrol in a household bottle? How could you know you were out of fabric conditioner when there was a seemingly a full bottle right there. Like why was it even in the kitchen???
Honestly I’m sat here livid for you.

KeeleyJ · 15/03/2026 13:48

Put it on a hot, long wash with double the usual amount of detergent.

Put a sacrificial old white towel in the wash and if it comes out clean, you're good to go otherwise repeat as necessary.

Castrate DH while final spin is going.....he is the reason we had public safety adverts on TV in the 1980's.

SparklyTwinkleGlitter · 15/03/2026 13:50

What sort of brain dead moron puts 2 stroke into a fabric conditioner bottle and leaves it near the washing machine???

Firstly, he should have bought the correct type of bottle to store flammable liquids in and if he uses something else in an emergency, he should have labelled it and put it somewhere out of reach, preferably in the garage or shed.

I’d be reading him the riot act to kingdom come if it was my DH.

NFPorterkeeponkeepingonNsoul · 15/03/2026 13:56

He's the idiot.
I still remember the 70s pif about storing random stuff in bottles labelled differently .

Pedallleur · 15/03/2026 13:59

Doubt it will damage the machine but a hot wash with a cleaner should flush everything out. His fault tho

Atatwalker · 15/03/2026 14:00

Long hot wash. Double detergent. Do this 3 or 4 times. Put a towel in and when it doesn’t stink you’re golden.

Acutissima · 15/03/2026 14:01

Is it safe to put in a dryer? I'm sure I read somewhere about oily rags spontaneously setting on fire. Double check first op. He's a massive sausage, that's so brainless to store it on that bottle!

persephonia · 15/03/2026 14:04

He knows he fucked up. That's why he is making a big fuss to redirect the fuck up.
I assume you took the clothes out of the machine? At least you (because you have a brain) noticed before turning the machine on as otherwise all the clothes would be ruined.

TheSlantedOwl · 15/03/2026 14:05

Totally his fault and he should apologise.

persephonia · 15/03/2026 14:06

Did you pour it into the little pour tray? If so before doing multiple boil washes I would take the pout tray out and clean it. Then put it back and do the boil wash with lots of washing powder. I guess most of the petrol will already have gone through the tray into the machine but at least that way you are getting rid of some before hand.

HangryBrickShark · 15/03/2026 14:07

Thanks everyone.

Yes I am annoyed that he's making it my fault. To say its my fault because I should have bought some out shopping takes the biscuit. 😤😡

When I was growing up if Mum and Dad had stuff in jam jars like terps for cleaning paint brushes for example, then they were clearly labelled with masking tape and written on what they were and stored high up in cupboards! ☠️

Sorry yes, we washed out the little tray but for some reason fabric conditioner dissapears as soon as it goes in there, whereas with our previous washing machine it used to stay there until such time it was 'sucked in'. Sorry not very technically worded there!

I've left him to deal with it I'm so frustrated lol

Why did he ask you whether there was any fabric conditioner? Surely he knew the answer was no as he used the empty bottle for the petrol mix.

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 15/03/2026 15:54

Putting petrol in a thin plastic bottle inside the house is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard - imagine if there was a fire in the house? The thing would go off like a bomb. Plus the petrol degrades that kind of plastic over time so you get flammable vapours indoors. He’s a complete idiot and even more infuriatingly he’s blaming you for his own stupidity.

Marmalade71 · 15/03/2026 16:08

Yes I admit my brain defaulted to the fire risk quite apart from the washing machine. He stored petrol in your kitchen???
Is he really, really thick?
And the audacity to blame you!
Arsehole!

CrocusesFlowering · 15/03/2026 16:14

The op says she took the bottle inside to ask her dp what was in it. I think that may mean the washing machine is in a shed or garage.

SpaceRaccoon · 15/03/2026 16:48

It might take a lot of washes to clear the smell. DH got a bit of petrol on a hoody and I swear I had to run about ten washes to get rid of that smell. Soda crystals helped.

gamerchick · 15/03/2026 16:50

I don't even think you can store petrol in just some random bottle can you? He's an idiot.
I can't imagine how much you'll have to run the machine to clear it. Petrol is bugger

gamerchick · 15/03/2026 16:53

Google says you shouldn't even run the machine. Leave it to air doe several days and wipe out to let vapours escape. It's a fire risk now apparently.

Might be worth getting some proper advice than just Google though.

user7538796538 · 15/03/2026 16:57

oh dear! Dh and Ds are always getting petrol/diesel/oil on clothes. The only way to get rid of the smell is to leave out on the line in all weathers till the smell is gone. It takes weeks. Not sure just running the machine a few times will be enough. Maybe try a washing machine cleaning product- Calgon? I think the adverts were!

ShakyBake · 15/03/2026 16:58

This happened to my late gran who stored polyfiller in a fixodent tub and glued her mouth together and we had to call the fire brigade because she had a panic attack

Never mix labeled containers of any kind, it's not worth the saving

MrsVBS · 15/03/2026 17:19

No one in their right mind would petrol in a household item bottle, store it in the house and not clearly mark it.

Oh god am I going to hell for laughing at this??? That is genuinely terrible and hilarious.
