Reusable toilet wipes and flannels instead of loo roll, any recommendations?

I'm currently looking at the Cheeky Wipes system but I can see there are quite a few brands.

I've (kind of) got over the Eeewww although I'm not sure what can be more Eeewww than dragging a piece of flimsy paper over one's arse.

I have a bidet bottle thingy and that works well - also hugely less expensive than a bidet loo. Wash with that, dry with flannel, flannel into wash.

Sorry OP, I don't have recommendations.

I suppose I wouldn't do this as I don't want to wash them! Somehow it feels more ick than reusable sanitary towels, which I do use.

Nomorevape · 12/03/2026 10:41

What are the advantages for you of doing this? Genuine question!
toilet paper isn’t a massive expense and probably comparable to the extra laundry.
I do try to be eco conscious in my choices but this is a step too far!

Wype gel?

@Nomorevape
Well, I don't know but it's something I've been considering. I live in an area which has been directly affected by water companies letting sewerage into the sea (indeed only last week!) and that includes huge wodges of toilet paper (and unflushable baby wipes).

It's not about cost, it's more about impact of the over development of land, with sewer systems not coping, increase strain on public systems i.e. sewers and me feeling like I want to do my bit, maybe.

But yes, I do feel a tad squeamish and it may be I stump up a not inconsiderable wad of cash to have a bidet loo installed. But I'd rather not really!

In some areas of Europe you're not allowed to flush loo roll. Would having a bin with a tight fitting lid solve your issues about paper down the loo?

Blorengia · 12/03/2026 12:00

I've seen quite a few adverts for the Wype but I felt it was rather expensive for what it is...
So I tried simple Aloe Vera gel instead.
Works perfectly and it's much cheaper.

Having used reusable wipes with cloth nappies for years, as an adult I would not. Partly eww but mostly because despite using all the mesh bags in the world the effect on the washing machine(s) was not worth it. When you have to collect actual poo out of the door seal on a regular basis, or had the repairman pull wipes out of the drainage pipe and/or wrapped around the heating coil - no. Just no. Never again.

You can buy bidet bottles from Amazon for less than a tenner- then you just need a small amount of toilet paper to dry with. You can get proper hose attachments for the toilet but try a plastic bottle for £8 for a bit first!

Liminal1975 · 12/03/2026 12:10

A friend of mine hemmed cloths for the toilet beautifully during the panic buying of 2020.

MannequinsArePeopleToo · 12/03/2026 12:24

Yes, I've got a bidet bottle and it's very good (and I just ordered another one for the downstairs loo). I use a flannel to wipe dry afterwards.
It's ok but a bit faffy.

smallglassbottle · 12/03/2026 12:28

I want to do this, but dh can't cope with the idea and I receive side eye if I mention it 😂 I have a hose wishy washy thing on the en suite and I use that then pat off dry with a bit of loo roll. I'd rather use washable cloths, but worry about being shamed by dh 😅

Jrisix · 12/03/2026 12:29

Can you get one of those water gun things installed? Maybe cheaper than a bidet?

Westfacing · 12/03/2026 12:36

Why do you need a wipe/flannel after you've washed using the bidet bottle?

I first use loo paper, then wash with warm soapy water using an old plastic measuring jug, Middle Eastern-style, then dry with a small towel

Westfacing · 12/03/2026 12:44

And you'd have to launder the wipes/flannels, so they're not necessarily better for the environment. Do you really want faeces-laden cloths sitting around waiting to be laundered?

They don't have faeces on because you wash yourself with the bottle or hose. The cloths are just to pat dry. If you're doing a wash anyway, they just go in with that (bedding and towels), so you're not doing an extra wash.

Simonjt · 12/03/2026 12:48

How about a shattaf? We have one on every toilet we then have a box of fresh flannels (for drying) and another box to chuck in wet flannels.

Well actually we have a Japanese loo seat on one toilet, so no flannels there.

Westfacing · 12/03/2026 12:53

But your thread title says Reusable toilet wipes and flannels instead of loo roll

And what would be Eeewww about the cloths just patting dry?

I'm confused!

MannequinsArePeopleToo · 12/03/2026 13:42

@Jrisix I've just been looking for approved plumbers who can properly install one as there are strict regulations about them. It might be the way.

OP posts:
MannequinsArePeopleToo · 12/03/2026 13:44

@Simonjt yes that's looking like a solution TY.

BillieWiper · 12/03/2026 13:47

So you'd have to hand or machine wash a pooey flannel each time you do a BM?

Adequate paper then through hand wash plus your fun gun (soz that's what me and pals called it when travelling in SE Asia) should be much better surely?

I know 😁I've gone a bit off piste! Its because someone upthread suggested a bidet bottle which I already have and that made me think maybe I do something more permanent.

I'm confused, how would squirting water at your arse get all the shit off? Surely the cloth has to do more than just pat dry?

Oh I see you use loo paper, first which I think defeats the whole purpose of what the OP is trying to do - ie not use loo paper.

I use this too. I bought Wype to begin with to get the containers- just a large one for the bathroom and a small handbag one, then when they were empty I refilled with Aloe Vera gel which I usually buy when on special offer. I have crohns so find this invaluable. Feel nice and clean after and nothing to damage the environment either

Theolittle · 12/03/2026 14:05

I would recommend a portable bidet instead - so much cleaner and kinder to your bum than any loo roll or wipes. They are hand held and would fit in a big bag or in your bathroom cupboard

Squirting with water does fully clean the poo off, then pat with loo roll to dry

lovecheesymash · 12/03/2026 14:22

Surely you would need to put washing machine on every couple of days on a boil or hot wash? That would work out expensive on electricity and water usage. I wouldn’t want to launder poo clothes with my bedding.

Allseeingallknowing · 12/03/2026 14:36

I don’t want piles of poo flannels building up. Imagine that with several children! Toilet paper plus spray cleaners for that purpose will do just fine! All these other methods described on here sound like a right faff
