What to buy mum when the obligatory flowers and chocolate have done their time?

I've done flowers, plants, chocolate and lunches out to death. Mum has serious eczema so skin stuff completely out the window. She has loads of jewellery but doesn't really wear it. Children have made her various bits and pieces over the years but they are 13 and 10 now.... looking for inspiration for mother's day/birthday please!

Does she have any hobbies or might she be interested in starting some?

I gave my mum a crochet starter kit once & showed her what to do. She said (privately) that it was a refreshing change from flowers & chocolate!

A photo album or photo book with photos of her and the children (and you of course!) over the years?

Sofado · 08/03/2026 17:52

I’m still v happy with flowers and chocolate for ever.

Gettingbysomehow · 08/03/2026 17:54

Mothers day is for flowers. It always has been. Its not christmas or a birthday. Flowers are enough.

Moshalot · 08/03/2026 17:54

Home baking?
Hobby kits, if she is crafty, to try something she hasn't done before.
A book.
Herbal tea selection.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 08/03/2026 17:54

Lunch out is the winner when everything else is exhausted. It doesn't matter how many times you've done it before, it's always a treat.

I like flowers and chocolate though, I'd never complain about getting those.

Gettingbysomehow · 08/03/2026 17:54

If you must get a gift look at etsy. It has everything.

CountryMouse22 · 08/03/2026 17:54

Maybe a small cross stitch kit?

CleanOurWater · 08/03/2026 17:56

Things I would like:

  • flowers are always lovely - or plants
  • books
  • beautiful scarves from liberty or similar
  • photos/photobook

I've decided to buy my mum a rose bush this year. She mentioned a while ago that hers were getting 'woody' and she has bought a few new ones. So I'll go to the garden centre and get her something nice.

CruCru · 08/03/2026 18:02

How much would you like to spend?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/03/2026 18:05

My mum’s last 2 presents from family have been a one off drawing/painting class at a local art gallery which she really enjoyed. Things which didn’t go down well were 2 Jigsaw tops which she then returned for a credit note as she couldn’t find anything she liked.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 08/03/2026 18:05

Flowers are timeless, I love flowers.

TheCountessofLocksley · 08/03/2026 18:06

Does she want “stuff”? Would she be happy with the money you would have spent being donated to a foodbank or charity close to her heart?

My two adult chidten are adopting a donkey from the local horse sanctuary for me.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 08/03/2026 18:09

Take her out somewhere nice for the day....spa, national trust, Theatre tickets, afternoon tea

WWomble · 08/03/2026 18:12

Personally I would always love flowers or chocolates, but the gift that means the most is time. As a mum what I love is time with my children. As a bereaved daughter what I would love most is more time with my mum.

babasaclover · 08/03/2026 18:16

Last year I bought my mum the raising Hare book she absolutely loved it

Buscobel · 08/03/2026 18:21

I’m always happy with flowers, or a plant for the garden, or even seeds that can be planted in the garden.

I’d love a voucher for afternoon tea, a meal out, a gift card for a wool shop, one for a cross stitch, one for a day out somewhere, one for a haircut.

I’d love a new photo of the grandchildren in a lovely frame.

sleepandcoffee · 08/03/2026 18:23

Art print , a nice ceramic flower pot for her garden , afternoon tea voucher for the two of you , little food hamper , a plant for the garden

Ohpleeeease · 08/03/2026 18:25

Flowers if delivered by the sender. A beautiful scented candle. But best of all, time with my DC. DS took me to a concert, so enjoyed doing something just the two of us.

FamingolosForDays · 08/03/2026 18:26

She is a sewer but its more a necessity rather than hobby. She works full time and has my dad to keep her on her toes at the weekend. Her hobby i guess is her garden! She likes to have her feet done but I paid for that last year 🙈

Afternoon tea. You could get it delivered.

I've seen some paper flowers online that look really nice and might be a bit different.

PixelDustMom · 08/03/2026 18:27

My mum loves to drink nice coffee. I’ve bought her a lovely gift set of different coffees from Whittard of Chelsea, they also do tea sets.

mrssunshinexxx · 08/03/2026 18:29

Afternoon tea voucher , a musical, spa day , an experience like escape rooms , indoor sky diving ?
