Should I have an H bar painted in front of my drop kerb?

Should I have an H bar painted in front of my drop kerb to prevent illegal parking issues? We're constantly facing almost nightly problems with vehicles parking over our kerb. Will having the H bar painted make a difference, or will people continue to ignore it? What if despite the markings, vehicles still block our access? How should we handle situations where people blatantly disregard the rules and show no consideration? Is it worth having one painted? Please let me know your views.

If you think it’s one of four neighbours can you ring the four doorbells to track down the owner?

MagpiePi · 06/03/2026 08:12

You can’t paint your own lines on a public highway. You’d need to contact the local highways office to arrange it.

Who do you call for parking enforcement?

My local borough in London has a number and I just call them them my address and the colour and brand of the car and licence plate.

So if you Google Croydon/ Bromley/ Enfield (or whatever) and parking enforcement into Google it pops up

You can but it’ll not stop them. I have a dropped kerb in front of my garage. The garage I park my car in. At least four times a week some hard of thinking idiot parks in front of it.

Sgcloset · 06/03/2026 09:03

They shouldn’t be doing it, but I doubt if they are consciously picking on you just because you are a "vulnerable mother and daughter". Is it the same car parking there every time?

Have you tried leaving a note on any car parked there? "Please don’t park here. It is illegal to park over a dropped kerb. You have blocked me in so that I could not get my car out when I needed to, to get to work/get my daughter to school etc. / blocked my access to my private parking space on my property. I have photographed your car parked here illegally and if it happens again I will have to contact the police." And do photograph it every time, showing the reg no., so you build up evidence.

How do the police do that then? They don't have people's phone numbers. They might get the address from DVLA and send a letter which will arrive two weeks later. But the person isn't at home anyway, they are parked over a driveway!

About 15 years ago I parked at my friends house and didn’t realise that I had blocked a rear drive way with a dropped kerb. I just thought it was a back garden with your typical 6ft fence. Ashurst? I went to my friends, had lots of drinks and got a taxi home. My mother called me absolutely furious at 7.45 the following morning. It was her cat and she was away with work, I don’t know how but the police absolutely DID get my mums number and called her up demanding that she move the car (that she didn’t know id borrowed and driven 120 miles away). The police have access to a lot of information, it’s hardly beyond the realms of sense that they would USE that information to contact people by phone 🤷🏼‍♀️

Is is completely blocking your car in?

HesarealJacquelineHigh · 06/03/2026 09:25

We've got a long H bar painted on the kerb opposite our driveway, because people parking there makes it impossible for us to get off our drive and also because it makes the road too narrow for people to pass. They aren't legally enforceable though so people still park there every day

Just an update: I've applied to the council to have a white line painted.

Good luck.

A lot of drivers just ignore them. If and when the council agree ask them who is responsible for enforcement.

The council offered to have a h line painted at back street at my parents house, they had a garage. There was already one there bug it was never enforced. Council said it was a police issue, police said it was a council issue. Gave after many years and late appointments.

Nonsense. The police do not have a list of everyone's phone numbers. And they'd have to get the name of the owner from DVLA first anyway.

Yes. I can confirm I have done this if a car is blocking the drive.
They have rung back and said they've made contact.

Then a few minutes later someone comes and sheepishly moves it.

They'd be the first to moan if someone did it to them.

We always make a point of looking round when we park to check all.is good. Don't people do that anymore?

Keroppi · 06/03/2026 20:49

Could you park on your drive overhanging at the front for a while to deter people parking there? Break the habit? Or park across your own drive for a while?

Alternatively you could just lay on your horn loudly until someone comes Grin that's one of my favourites.
Report to the police and council.
Call police if you needed to get out for a Dr's appt or something.. whether that was urgent or not they wouldn't know..

I once parked my car over my own driveway and ended up with a huge dent in it! Also, it costs more to insure parking it like that?

You must have struck lucky and the person was either an employee of the force, or a criminal.

Because there is zero way the police have people's phone numbers and car reg details linked together.
