Should I have an H bar painted in front of my drop kerb?

Should I have an H bar painted in front of my drop kerb to prevent illegal parking issues? We're constantly facing almost nightly problems with vehicles parking over our kerb. Will having the H bar painted make a difference, or will people continue to ignore it? What if despite the markings, vehicles still block our access? How should we handle situations where people blatantly disregard the rules and show no consideration? Is it worth having one painted? Please let me know your views.

I had one painted over the dropped kerb outside my garage it did help

You can get specific signs warning people about penalties for parking over dropped curbs, if you have a gatepost or similar it would be cheaper.
One of our neighbours has one that says something along the lines of "Every single vehicle that parks across this dropped curb will be photographed and reported to to the council to be fined" its remarkably effective whereas the H bars near the shops suffer quite badly from "I'll just be a minute"

GingerPants · 05/03/2026 22:22

A lot of people don’t want signs about parking and CCTV on their homes though. Like a 70’s shopping precinct. And it’s not illegal to park over a dropped kerb if there is no car on the drive.

No. I wouldn't bother. White lines are advisory only. You should put up signs but also ask the council to help - they can and should enforce against vehicles parked over the dropped kerb.

My car is in my drive though 🤷

You phone the police if anyone blocks it. You give them the car registration and they should contact the owner and get them to move it.
It's an offence to park over a dropped kerb.

There are so many people around who don't care or don't know what things mean though.
It's a bit of a battle.

How do they get back in, if your blocking. Abit of courtesy wouldn't go amiss.

They see a vulnerable mother and daughter living here and they think they can do what they want.

How do the police do that then? They don't have people's phone numbers. They might get the address from DVLA and send a letter which will arrive two weeks later. But the person isn't at home anyway, they are parked over a driveway!

BrownSharpie · 05/03/2026 23:57

I knew a lady who took a screwdriver to any and every car that blocked her driveway, it was remarkably effective. She was old and didn’t give a fuck.

They do it to anyone.
Selfish, be a different story if they were blocked in.

Mobile number.
Yes it does work. You give them the details, police can look.up number and try and call them.

Boughy · 06/03/2026 00:28

Police only have a record of the number if the owner has happened to call police previously with said number or the person is known on their local systems. They don’t have a special directory to look up for mobile numbers! 🤦🏻‍♀️

You do’t get back in if someone is blocking your drive, it’s happened to me a billion times though when I lived next to a school.

SheilaFentiman · 06/03/2026 06:28

Can’t hurt to paint the H line - it’s an extra visual clue to anyone doing it without thinking much.

Presumably if they know who lives there, you know who’s parking there. After all, a random stranger wouldn’t know who lives in a house they park outside would they?

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 06/03/2026 06:41

We have this problem
I call parking enforcement every time.
It isnt fixed but def improved.

we had a few cars towed...

Nonsense. The police do not have a list of everyone's phone numbers. And they'd have to get the name of the owner from DVLA first anyway.

I actually don't know for sure. It's a toss up between four houses I feel. Anyway, it's not the point. No one should be parked in front of my car in my driveway, over a dropped kerb - ever.

If you now need to get out for work or to do the school run or go to appointments then call the police and see what they say.
