Weekend in Glasgow - any recommendations?

ChloeCannotCanCan · 03/03/2026 12:16

Myself and DH have a weekend planned in Glasgow in Mid March - no kids <thanks grandparents!>

Any recommendations for things to do and places to eat?

We love art, history and nature, not very interested in visiting distilleries or anything sporty. We would like a cafe for quick lunch on Saturday, posh(ish!) meal out restaurant for Saturday night and then somewhere for a relaxed Sunday lunch before we drive home…

Any suggestions of great places to go and things to do?

Art and history = kelvingrove museum.
Nature = probably won't have time to go to the surrounding countryside, but maybe a walk along ther river Kelvin, botanic gardens or pollok park.
Posh(ish) meal = Margo in the city centre/ merchant city area.

Oh also, you're likely to get more responses in Scotsnet rather than chat!

There’s a Scotsnet? I shall go and investigate- thanks!

Art:
Kelvingrove Museum and Hunterian Museum are in the West End, or GoMA in the City Centre.

Lunch:
Brel or the Grosvenor Cafe on Ashton Lane (West End)
There are countless lovely Italian restaurants for lunch in the City Centre; Little Tuscany is great.

Dinner Restaurants:
Ubiquitous Chip on Ashton lane (West End)
or Ardnamurchan in the City Centre - both Scottish fare

Nature:
Botanic Gardens in the West End. A walk along Byres Road heading there is nice; some pretty shops etc. Oran Mor is a fantastic pub right across from the Gardena on byres Road and is a pleasant way to while away a couple of hours.

I'll add that the Glasgow Subway is a fantastic way to travel - it'll get you between the city centre and the West End within 10 minutes. It's £4.45 for an all day ticket.

The Burrell Collection. Excellent collection, beautifully displayed. Easy to get to by train from Glasgow Central (2 stops, short walk). Good cafe. Stands in a large park. Free!

Dinner
Ox and Finch
No 16
Madurai (not posh but gorgeous food!)
Saffron by Paradise (as above)
Swadish
Lobo (Southside)

Best Italian - Sarti on Bath Street

Brunch
Sorisso cafe
The Left Bank

Walk up to the Necropolis and Glasgow Catherdral. Up there you also have St Mungo’s / provost lordships house.
Kelvingrove Museum and a walk through Kelvingrove Park.
West End - Byres Road / Finnieston both good areas for cafes and restaurants.
Merchant City (east end) also vibrant with lots of nice spots to eat.
Soirée wine bar on the way to Merchant city.
Southside - Burrell Collection / Pollok Park.
Shawlands and Queen’s Park good to wander around.

I was going to suggest the same. Gorgeous walk around Pollock Park, see the highland cows , and a lovely, light filled cafe.

Also recommending Cafe Strange Brew in Shawlands for a glorious brunch and Lobo for ‘small plates’ at night.

Edinburgh? Joking aside, I don't really see Glasgow as a tourist city. But some of the things mentioned above are nice enough.

Literally thousands of tourists visit Glasgow 🙄

The transport museum is brilliant! Much more interesting than I expected!

ChloeCannotCanCan · 03/03/2026 19:49

Thanks everyone - some really great suggestions for me to find out more about!

Loads of great recommendations already. Restaurant wise, would just add Partick Duck Club and Paesano pizza (both west end).

sociableintrovert123 · 03/03/2026 20:10

What area of Glasgow are you staying? I love The Ivy in the city centre for dinner-that would fit the posh brief!

4.7 million overnight visitors in 2024!

House for a Music Lover is close to the Burrell Collection

Purplemoonboots · 03/03/2026 21:00

There are some stunning murals around the city centre.

Mind your head if you are tall on the Glasgow Subway- it's smaller than even the London Underground.

Ophir · 03/03/2026 21:08

Singl End or cafe gandolfi for brunch.

Number 16, or Glaschu, or Maison by Glaschu, Ox and Finch; Kelp, or Ka Pao for dinner. Unalome is fantastic if you’re feeling fancy

East End Fox for a Sunday roast en route south if you’re driving.

You should definitely go to Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre, it’s short but brilliant. The Gate for cocktails. See if there’s anything on at The Glue Factory art wise.

Ophir · 03/03/2026 21:11

oh! Or Five March

MedusasHead · 03/03/2026 21:23

Cail Bruich for a fancy meal - delicious food that’s Scottish and seasonal.

Ubiquitous Chip brassery is also lovely.

Glasgow has a great art scene, check out The Modern Institute, Tramway, Street Level, David Dale and Kendall Koppe.

The Burrell is great too. See the highland coos in Pollok Park.

I thought Cail Bruich closed down? I think the guys moved on. Possibly to Ten Eighty Two I. Finnieston but I am not totally sure!
