Telling you because I can't tell anyone else

I am just posting here because I can't tell anyone else and I am very proud of DS15. Just under a year ago he walked away from a sport that he was very good at (national level) due to bullying by his peers and to a certain extent by his coaches.

He decided to take up running to keep fit but because of his experiences refused to joing any group even the super casual adult groups that were willing to have him because the idea of organised training was too much.

Well without telling anyone and without training for it he decided to see if he could run a marathon as a personal challenge. And he did. Through sheer grit and determination he ran a marathon with no support, no crowds cheering him on, no reward of a medal and bragging rights at the end. Just him and his thoughts and 26.2 miles. He wasn't going to tell me but I found out as his Garmin is linked to my email address and I got a notification. He doesn't want to tell anyone, doesn't want me to tell anyone he just wanted to do it for himself so he knew he could do it.

Anyway I think that shows a remarkable level of self worth for a teenager and he's a better man than me because if I ever did anything like that I would need all the likes and congratulations going and would definitely be milking it for a while.

That is brilliant! And that sort of integrity and motivation will take him a very long way in life.

Catherine468 · 02/03/2026 21:47

Love this. Good for him!

Bearsdolovetrees · 02/03/2026 21:47

I mean, he just ran. Fair play but…I don’t think it’s worthy of ‘he’s a better man than me’ posts. Many things make a better man and running isn’t one of them

NotnowMildrid · 02/03/2026 21:57

An incredible boy.
You must be so proud (understatement).

SabrinaThwaite · 02/03/2026 21:58

I know a few athletes bullied out of your DC’s original sport, including one on the podium potential pathway. My own DS left it at age 16 for a completely different sport but has gone back 10 years later, and is finding it a completely different experience.

If he still enjoys it, then never say never.

Htcunya · 02/03/2026 21:58

To be bullied out of his sport then take up running and run that distance, with all the effort and commitment that requires, on his own, at the age of fifteen, is a great achievement. If he can apply that determination in other aspects of his life he will do very well.

I hope he continues to enjoy running or other sports in the future, maybe with groups of like-minded people.

Nurseposter123 · 02/03/2026 22:01

What an amazing young man.

I discovered running after a tricky time and it's been my saving grace. It is a sport in itself and perhaps this is his new strength!

Mildmanneredmum · 02/03/2026 22:17

I think I've got something in my eye xxx

Dollymylove · 02/03/2026 22:29

Worrieddancemum · 02/03/2026 23:01

Also, less than 1% of the global population will run a marathon, so he is absolutely brilliant to have done that

Firefly45 · 02/03/2026 23:01

I haven't even met him and I am bursting with pride

Landlubber2019 · 02/03/2026 23:05
