How do you clean your menstrual cup?

DoomCup · 02/03/2026 20:22

Just that really.

I know that during the day a quick rinse is fine before re-inserting, but wondering what the best option will be for a more thorough cleanse between uses.

I don't have a microwave and I don't want to boil it on the stove - has anyone bought one of the little steamer machines?

I also read elsewhere that soap and water is fine but the instructions on mine (Mooncup) say to sterilise.

I used to use Milton cold water sterilising tablets in a wee plastic pot before the joy of no periods 😄

PinotPinot · 02/03/2026 20:24

I don't really use mine anymore, but when I did I used special soap for menstrual cups day to day and then boiled it when period had ended. How come you don't want to boil it? I mean nobody wants to I suppose! But it is an easy way to sterilise it

DoomCup · 02/03/2026 20:29

Teenage DS at home, I'm all for normalising and not stigmatising periods but I do think that seeing me boiling my menstrual cup on the same stove I make the spag bol on would be a bit strange for him!

How about sterilising tablets?

😂

Is a microwave any better though? My kids are younger, but nobody has ever noticed what I am doing tbh. If he's likely to see the stove is he not equally likely to see it spinning round in the microwave?

Notdanishsusan · 02/03/2026 20:32

A Jar and half a Milton tablet.

InMySpareTime · 02/03/2026 20:34

In a small container with a denture tablet and warm water and leave it on a bright windowsill (usually my room) for a while.

firstofallimadelight · 02/03/2026 20:34

I’ve switch to period pants but I use to pour boiling water over it in a little plastic pot (which I kept separate to other pots)

Justploddingonandon · 02/03/2026 20:36

Can you not boil it on the stove while he’s not around? I don’t use mine much anymore, but when I did I boiled it in water while the kids were at school. I just stuck the pan in the dishwasher afterwards, but you could get a pan you don’t use for cooking if that bothers you.

I don't have a microwave!

I'd prefer not to clean it in the kitchen and was just wondering what the other options are.

I have been using a small pot on the stove so far which is fine, but I feel like something I can just keep in my bathroom/bedroom would be simpler.

I don't really bother with anything special. I give it a good wash with face wash while I'm in the shower and pop it away till next month. Never had any issues.

Myexhas6kids · 02/03/2026 20:56

I just use soap and water

This.

Putting it in isn't a sterile process. It's not stored in a sterile environment, nor handled in a sterile manner.

nuttyslackster · 02/03/2026 21:00

A splash of Milton in a cup of water

WiseMoose · 02/03/2026 21:01

I no longer need mine - but I used to just give it a good wash with shampoo or shower gel at the end of my period and put it back in its box in the bathroom.

I didn't really think it needs to be sterilised- it isn't like it's going to be sealed in an airtight space until next month.

OchreSwan · 02/03/2026 21:03

I just run it under very hot water from the tap for a minute or so and then chuck in the drawer. As a PP has said, I’m not handling it or storing it in a sterile environment so I can’t see that actually sterilising it makes much difference? I’ve been using one for probably 8 years and think I boiled it on the stove once in that whole time, no problems so far.

Ponderingwindow · 02/03/2026 21:06

I started with a small pot I kept just for the purpose of boiling it on the stove. I just preferred dedicated cookware. I eventually bought a steamer. So much less work. I’m for anything that saves effort and gets the job done.

YourNeedyTaupeCat · 02/03/2026 21:16

I use a cup (kept in the bathroom just for this purpose!) with Milton/generic equivalent and cold water. It does a good job cleaning it. Usually do it before the start and at the end of each period. Just wash after use during.

Keepstanding · 02/03/2026 21:16

I just wash it out with soap and water.

YourNeedyTaupeCat · 02/03/2026 21:17

Boiling it was such a pain...cold water sterilising is far easier

A splash of Milton in a cup of water

Yup, basically this, but I bought one of the collapsible silicone containers instead of a cup. Cost about 8 quid and the bottle of Milton I bought yonks ago is still going.

Reinventedblanket · 02/03/2026 21:22

Milton tablet in glass jar. Just store it in there till needed again.

tryinganothername · 02/03/2026 21:25

just a really good swish with hot water.

When I first got one, over 20 years ago i boiled it, but since having children, so about the past 12 years or so, I've only rinsed it (very well) under hot water and all's been fine for over a decade and counting..

Koalaslippers · 02/03/2026 21:26

I wash it off then stick it in a cup of boiling water for 5 min. Dry it on the window sill.

Plumbernightmare · 02/03/2026 21:46

No one has suggested dishwasher yet… 😂 Surely that’s Mumsnet bingo?
