How do you clean your menstrual cup?

Just that really.

I know that during the day a quick rinse is fine before re-inserting, but wondering what the best option will be for a more thorough cleanse between uses.

I don't have a microwave and I don't want to boil it on the stove - has anyone bought one of the little steamer machines?

I also read elsewhere that soap and water is fine but the instructions on mine (Mooncup) say to sterilise.

Just dip it in the toilet.

I used to boil the kettle and stick it in a little pot of boiling temp water. Then give it a once over with lunette cup wash and a good rinse.

Sterilising tablet in the mooncup washing up cup.

whats that now??

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 02/03/2026 21:53

I’d bring a mug of boiling water to bathroom then dunk it in there before storing

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 02/03/2026 21:55

Soap and water ,tampons aren't sterile and mooncuos don't need to be.

yumscrummy · 02/03/2026 21:56

I was it in the bathroom sink and put it on the windowsill for a few weeks.

Joking, right?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 02/03/2026 22:01

I stick it in warm water with one or two sterilising tablets.

There is an odour if you don’t sterilise.

Teenage DS at home, I'm all for normalising and not stigmatising periods but I do think that seeing me boiling my menstrual cup on the same stove I make the spag bol on would be a bit strange for him!

Both my sons have had the joy of seeing mine in the shower when I’ve left it there by accident.

In many years of use mine never did.

No one has suggested dishwasher yet… 😂 Surely that’s Mumsnet bingo?

I came here to say dishwasher!!!😂😂😂

yumscrummy · 02/03/2026 23:06

The windowsill method gets rid of the odour. Not sure how but it does. Recommended from another thread similar to this

I think this is fine though! I have an en suite so we don't use the same bathroom, but if we did I wouldn't go out of my way to keep things out of sight.

Point taken about it not needing to be sterile though.

I used one for 10 years and never had an odour.

My youngest nodded nonchalantly at mine at the age of about 6 when I was cleaning it in the bathroom and asked 'are you washing your star plug?'
