What’s your family’s favourite home-cooked meal?

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 01/03/2026 19:44

Just made my family their favourite, which is chicken breasts topped with homemade pesto, wrapped in pancetta and served on rice with a white wine and mushroom sauce and green veg.

If I’m honest, it’s not my favourite - it’s fine, but I prefer food with more kick to it - but DH, DD and DS all really love it, so I make it at least once a month.

What’s the smash hit in your house?

We had a tomato marscapone risotto yesterday that was declared to be very good by everyone. Risotto of any kind is always popular.
Lasagne
Roast chicken
Steak

PawMaw · 01/03/2026 20:42

Cajun Meatballs (pork)
Cajun dirty rice

Shrinkhole · 01/03/2026 20:43

Oh and definitely chilli and variations on that eg fajitas or enchiladas

Why rice and not pasta out of interest? Sounds delicious btw. Is the pesto olive oil/Parmesan/basil/pine nuts?

Edited

DH doesn’t like pasta. Actually I don’t much like rice - I had mine with a few garlicky roast potatoes tonight.

I make rocket pesto rather than basil. Everyone likes the peppery flavour and you can get it in larger quantities than you usually can basil.

Either “spaghetti lasagne” or home made chicken pad thai

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/03/2026 21:10

Jamie Oliver special chicken (think it’s called That) with prosciutto ham, thyme, butter, lemon and celeriac.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/03/2026 21:13

Another fave is leeks wrapped in honey roast ham with cheese sauce. Can’t recall if you put breadcrumbs on it but you do bake it.

The DC always ask for 'sausage pasta'.

Sausage meat fried with shallots, garlic and chopped coriander and a small sprinkle of chilli flakes.
Add mutti tinned tomatoes, bit of water to wash the tin out. Add your choice of cooked pasta.
I used to add a generous swirl of cream before adding the pasta as per the original recipe but I omit this now for cost and calorie reasons! It's just as nice.

It annoys me that I can't think where the recipe came from tbh. I'm guessing Good Housekeeping/ Woman & Home magazine.

Dirtydianaoh · 01/03/2026 21:19

Lasagna or homemade burgers

I do something similar but with Italian flavours - basil, oregano, fennel - rather than coriander. And lots of parmesan on top.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/03/2026 21:35

Dh and Gdcs love my ‘shepherd’s’ pie, but it’s not really shepherd’s, since I make it with beef mince and semi veggie with red lentils and lots of finely chopped veg. Plus baked beans mixed in, and masses of mash on top.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 01/03/2026 21:39

Cornish pasty, veg and gravy

MrsBeltane · 01/03/2026 21:39

Sweet and sour chicken is popular. DS loves grilled chicken, tomato salad and Delia Smith's pesto rice salad served hot.

Fajitas! My kids love these, chicken, steak, even mackerel and lots of red onion and peppers. They love homemade guacamole, sour cream and really hot sauce 🔥

They also love pork vindaloo, daal & homemade chapati, or aloo parathas.

Finally they love my lasagne, garlic bread and a big salad.

What’s marry me chicken???

murasaki · 02/03/2026 01:05

Marry me chicken, nigella's chicken and chorizo tray bake, or the moussaka i make post Easter with the left over roast lamb, rather than using mince. Hairy bikers moussaka recipe with aubergines and potatoes, it's a mission, but worth it and stocks the freezer.
