Would you eat it?

bought some frozen salmon fillets yesterday at the end of the afternoon and forgot to put them away when I got home so they were sitting at room temperature in my kitchen. They are packed in individual plastic packs. They were out for 24 hours. WWYD? (I know what official advice would be, I'm wondering whether there might be some slack)

Yeah, if they didn’t smell bad, I would

NewYearNewMee · 01/03/2026 18:30

I’m a no, not with fish!

MrsHaroldWilson · 01/03/2026 18:33

I'd try my cats with a bit, if it passed their sniff test, I'd eat it.

purpleheartsandroses · 01/03/2026 18:37

That's how I leave stuff to defrost...put it on a plate on the side for 12-24 hours. So yes, id cook and eat it.

hididdlyho · 01/03/2026 18:40

Depends what room temperature in your kitchen is. Mine doesn't have a radiator and it was a cold day yesterday, so there's a chance they'd have only just thawed 24 hours later. I think fish gets that rancid, sour smell pretty soon after it's spoiled so you'd know, like with rotten eggs.

sprigatito · 01/03/2026 18:42

I would definitely eat it. People are far too hysterical about food safety rules and it leads to a lot of unnecessary waste.

Nannydoodles · 01/03/2026 18:42

How warm is your kitchen? I would probably just sniff them and if they smell ok cook them, sure they will be fine.
Probably wouldn’t on a hot summers day though.

butimamonstersaidthemonster · 01/03/2026 18:46

If it was frozen when you left it out then it was simply left to defrost and will be fine.

ArcticSkua · 01/03/2026 18:48

As they were frozen not fresh these should be absolutely fine.

Keroppi · 01/03/2026 18:49

Yes just cook it today and eat it, its basically like you've just left it out to defrost.

MomoisGogo · 01/03/2026 18:50

Nope.

user2848502016 · 01/03/2026 18:53

I would eat them

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 01/03/2026 18:55

I would, just make sure they’re well cooked.

LuckyOliveDeer · 01/03/2026 18:57

Yeah

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/03/2026 19:49

Yes

stichguru · 01/03/2026 19:53

Bad fish smells like stinky... really stinky! Open it, if you gag don't eat it...!

MotherofMigraines · 01/03/2026 19:54

Happened to me recently.. I ate them without incident

Shinyhappyapple · 01/03/2026 20:20

Presumably it was cold in your house overnight and they would have been frozen before then ? I guess it depends on how long they’ve been sitting around today and if it was in a warm room. I normally leave stuff on the kitchen surface to defrost overnight - but would have refridgerated once I got up and put heating on.

cramptramp · 01/03/2026 20:23

Always. I’m currently eating home made paella that has been left out of the fridge since last night.

BigBrownBoogyingBear · 01/03/2026 20:27

I wouldn't - but I'm vegetarian and don't trust myself to know if meat or fish smells bad. It always smells bad to me, even when it's fresh 🤢

Allbymyself123 · 01/03/2026 20:28

I wouldn’t but i’m really paranoid about food. My husband would eat it without a 2nd thought & i wish i could be a bit more like him

This ^^
I eat all kinds of food I’ve overlooked on the side or in the fridge.
I’ve never ever suffered.

Sniff it out & away from the packaging because packaging can be aromatic whereas the food will be absolutely fine to eat.

PickledMuffin · 01/03/2026 20:32

I’d eat them if they smelt ok 👌

Quashsquash · 02/03/2026 23:51

Cooked them and they were perfectly fine.
