Something has gone wrong somewhere and I am being told I have to have this done

I live in a housing association flat. I'm disabled and two years ago I had a wet room fitted because I was unable to get in and out of a bath.. This is relevant..

Three months ago I got a letter saying they had to do a stock condition survey to see if anything in the flat needs done. As he was leaving he said I needed a KITCHEN. (Kitchen is about 35 years old and is practically falling apart, missing drawers, one drawer hanging off etc)

Got a call today from a firm saying they were coming out to fit a new BATHROOM. I told them the guy said I needed a kitchen not a bathroom then explained I only had my wet room put in a few years ago and I have been told that I have to have it done and there is nothing on the list for me getting a kitchen. I am being told I can't refuse it. so basically I am having my disabled wet room ripped out and a bath put in, which I couldn't get in and out of which is why I got my wet room in the first place. I don't want to sound ungrateful at all but I do not need a new bathroom at all as it still looks new and IS new. I don't know how I will cope with a bath at all.

Where do I go from here? Housing association is now closed until Tuesday and the building firm is calling Monday morning with an appointment..

Refuse an appointment and speak to your housing officer first thing on Monday. Escalate escalate continuously and do not let them in to rip out your bathroom. Someone has made a massive mistake and it’s not you

Translatethedog · 27/02/2026 19:27

Do you have any emails regarding the wet room from when it was installed?

I would probably just not answer until you’ve spoken to your housing association.

DeltaVariant · 27/02/2026 19:27

Fight it. A major fuck up has occurred somewhere.

Did you need/ get permission for the wet room
When they phone on Monday just say you need to speak to HA before arranging an appointment
Hopefully just a communication breakdown

SpringDreams26 · 27/02/2026 19:29

I’m sorry they’ve spoken to you like that OP when the issue is clearly theirs and theirs alone. Anyone with an ounce of comprehension could understand the basis on which you were refusing and make a phone call to their contact to check everything was right.

Thistooshallpsss · 27/02/2026 19:29

If you run into difficulties I think this is the sort of problem that needs a light shining on it so I would go for local publicity mp etc but only if you can’t get someone to see sense

EveryKneeShallBow · 27/02/2026 19:30

Oh dear, that must be very worrying. Do you have anyone who could come and be there with you on Monday morning? For support so you’re not dealing with the builder alone?

BillieWiper · 27/02/2026 19:32

Yeah email the housing officer now and ring them as soon as open. Don't allow the bathroom people in.

Have you got anything in writing confirming the need for a kitchen from their side? If so forward them that. Either way reiterate you definitely do not and cannot have a bathroom with bath as you can only use wet room.

You could also send them the paperwork from the wet room if you can find it? As further proof new BR is not required or appropriate.

It may delay things but I'm sure it will get sorted. Just make sure you don't allow anything to happen to bathroom. No matter what workmen say.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 27/02/2026 19:32

Tell them you're not available for whatever appointment they try to give you, if they insist on booking something then try and get them to book it for several weeks away so that you have time to speak to the housing association.

Get hold of the housing association as soon as they open. They'll have a record of fitting the wet room. The builder won't have access to those records.

Someone has pressed the wrong button / clicked bathroom instead of kitchen, I deal with these kind of systems and it will be simple to fix once you've spoken to the right person.

Do you have the details of the person who came out and said you need a new kitchen? Ask to speak to him.

pilates · 27/02/2026 19:35

Refuse the appointment until you speak to the HA. That is crazy.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 27/02/2026 19:35

Phone or, better, email your local councillor tonight.
Copy in your housing officer, the housing convenor and anybody else relevant that you can think of (their details will be on your local council website). Do you have a relative, friend or neighbour who can be with you on Monday to provide support?

What a ridiculous situation they've put you in, I hope it can be sorted out without any more stress.

BrizzleMaverick · 27/02/2026 19:35

Do you have any social services/adult social care or charity that you receive support from for you disability? Just forward thinking that they could help fight your corner if the housing association stand their ground.

Have you not had any written correspondence at all?

I used to project manage this type of work and this seems really odd.

Clearly don't let them rip out the wet room.speak to the housing association on Tuesday.

You definitely can refuse it for now.

Marieb19 · 27/02/2026 19:58

There has been a cock up! Leave messages verbally and email with both the contractors and housing association. Do not let the contractors into your property if they intend to change thd bathroom. You are within your rights.

AmandaBrotzman · 27/02/2026 19:59

You don't have to let them in. If they call for an appointment tell them they are not coming in to your property until you've sorted it out with the HA. They can't force you to let them in!

Soontobe60 · 27/02/2026 20:05

Don’t panic, no one’s going to turn up on Monday and rip out your bathroom. For a start, alternative living arrangements would have to be made for you whilst any work is being carried out.

cooperdoops · 27/02/2026 20:07

forgot to say I still have all the paperwork for the wet room, I got permission to get it done, they came out an inspected it when it was done and signed it off.

Don’t worry, a contractor cannot force you to have work done, only the HA & even at that it would be a lot of back & forth before enforcement & only for H&S.
Clearly you need your shower, they cannot take that away from you.
Speak to your HO, there’s been a mistake.
I’m a HO & would be horrified at a customer receiving this type of call from a contractor. They’re way overstepping.
just refuse entry on Monday or don’t open the door.

bluegreengold · 27/02/2026 20:30

I work for a company that fits loads of kitchens and bathrooms in social housing.

they cannot force you. It’s all optional. We don’t fit units all the time due to people declining the works.

speak to you housing association. It can be sorted.

if the contractors turn up, just don’t let them in. They won’t want to have guys standing around being unproductive. They will soon get moved on.

when we fit kitchens/ bathrooms the resident has so sign that they are happy for us to go ahead. They pick all their colour choices. We would never just do it without consent.

it’s your home!

I agree with this compeltely, and I work on the contractor side

notallymcbeal · 27/02/2026 21:04

Op they will have an emergency out of hours number for repairs etc. If you check their website you should be able to find it. They should be able to sort it for you. Good luck!

Frannieisnthappy · 27/02/2026 21:19

I think I would speak to housing officer but also get my MP on the case. Good luck

On this basis it is clearly just a mistake/miscommunication to the builder. Don’t let him in, ring the HA office and follow up with an email. Please don’t worry.

I work in housing.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that someone has messed up somewhere. This isn't your fault, and the firm is completely out of line.

Tell them you need to speak to your housing association yourself as there has clearly been a mistake. Aside from anything else, there is no way they will rip out a new wet room. Somebody has muddled something up somewhere along the line.

Please try not to panic 🤍 it will get sorted!
