Something has gone wrong somewhere and I am being told I have to have this done

I live in a housing association flat. I'm disabled and two years ago I had a wet room fitted because I was unable to get in and out of a bath.. This is relevant..

Three months ago I got a letter saying they had to do a stock condition survey to see if anything in the flat needs done. As he was leaving he said I needed a KITCHEN. (Kitchen is about 35 years old and is practically falling apart, missing drawers, one drawer hanging off etc)

Got a call today from a firm saying they were coming out to fit a new BATHROOM. I told them the guy said I needed a kitchen not a bathroom then explained I only had my wet room put in a few years ago and I have been told that I have to have it done and there is nothing on the list for me getting a kitchen. I am being told I can't refuse it. so basically I am having my disabled wet room ripped out and a bath put in, which I couldn't get in and out of which is why I got my wet room in the first place. I don't want to sound ungrateful at all but I do not need a new bathroom at all as it still looks new and IS new. I don't know how I will cope with a bath at all.

Where do I go from here? Housing association is now closed until Tuesday and the building firm is calling Monday morning with an appointment..

Thats completely ridiculous. You need to refuse any access until this is sorted. You were obviously assessed for a wet room when it was done. If you can't get hold of your HA tomorrow call Adult Social Care and explain the distress this is causing

Phone or, better, email your local councillor tonight.
Copy in your housing officer, the housing convenor and anybody else relevant that you can think of (their details will be on your local council website). Do you have a relative, friend or neighbour who can be with you on Monday to provide support?

What a ridiculous situation they've put you in, I hope it can be sorted out without any more stress.

Local councillor is an excellent call!

If no joy contact your MP. When we moved out of our HA flat they were impossible to contact to get our overpaid rent back. They sent a cheque to the flat we'd left 🤦🏻‍♀️. Eventually when I contacted the MP they listened and we got it back. This is obviously an error they need to sort. Definitely deny entry until resolved.

Refuse access to the builder if anyone turns up. They should not have a key and have no right to force themselves in. Call the police if they try. If they call to make an appointment tell them the situation and you will be contacting the HA asap but cannot commit to a date at this point. Call up the HA on Tuesday and ask them to escalate to a complaint because there has been a serious error and you will likely be fobbed off by idiots unless you make it formal.

JenniferBooth · 01/03/2026 19:43

Do not let them in on Monday morning. If they try to force it call the police

This is probably a mistake but going from personal experience and the experiences of other tenants there are ppl who work in housing who want tenants to know their place

JulieJo · 01/03/2026 21:16

This must be really worrying for you. It sounds like they have made an error. Try not to worry.
1st thing on Monday, phone the Housing Association main phoneline and explain what has happened. They should be able to contact the correct team to sort this out.
Someone has made an error, not you.

If the company phones before you speak to the Housing Association, explain what has happened, ask them to go back to whoever sent them the worksheet and that you won't make an appointment until they have done that.

It will get sorted. Try not to worry.

I’m an OT who assesses for adaptations. It sounds like they’ve mixed up your kitchen with your bathroom. Very frustrating. And yes, you can refuse them entry.
I’d advise you call your housing association and ask to speak to the adaptations dept. as they may be able to sort it for you. Rather than the improvements team who don’t seem to know what’s going on.
If you get no luck with them and your shower was funded via DFG then call the DFG team to discuss. They maybe able to step in. There’s no way they’d want to funded another shower if the HA puts a bath back in. And yes you would be entitled if they did.
Good luck

Contact your location manager or area manager and get them involved. What housing association manages your property ?

forgot to say I still have all the paperwork for the wet room, I got permission to get it done, they came out an inspected it when it was done and signed it off.

That's enough proof then. Don't stress, someone's messed up. No way will they be removing it. If need be ask the person who referred you for the wet room to contact the housing association.

Craycraycatbaby · 02/03/2026 07:11

I work for a HA and this is obviously a mistake and a really simple fix. They’ll be able to see on the system when you had your bathroom done and when your kitchen is due for renewal. Just call them on Tuesday and it’ll be sorted in no time!

stichguru · 02/03/2026 07:43

I am sorry you are in this mess. I don't think you would be punished for initially refusing access to the builders anyway, Not once. I mean maybe if the HA suspected there was something seriously wrong which could rapidly get worse and cause a much bigger job to need doing, then you could be fined for damage caused by turning the builder away, but your bathroom or your kitchen are not going to become seriously in more need of repair because you don't let them do something today.

Phone the HA this morning and sort this - hopefully some numpty has ticked the wrong box on the repairs inventory - good luck!

Whyiseveryusernametakengodhelpme · 02/03/2026 10:49

I imagine there would have been an occupational therapist involved who dealt with the housing association, id contact them. But outside of that, I wouldn't let anyone in, and I'd ring the HA once they're open, it's clearly just an oversight

Did the contractors try coming round this morning @cooperdoops

There is always someone on duty. Keep calling the manager of the site
