How much exercise do you do ?

TinaTwinkleToes · 26/02/2026 20:32

I do a 30 mins lifting weights class
1 hour of yoga
30 mins step
30 mins hit
30 mins stair master
I also walk a mile there and back to my child's school twice a week

The above is within a week

I see people doing loads more exercise. How do they fit it in?

Weight training 3 x a week for 45-60 minutes.

Other than that I walk twice a day, every day, for at least 40 minutes at a time (weather dependent) as I have 2 active dogs. This is come rain or shine. On nice days we go for an hour, less nice days we are back within 40 mins. I ALWAYS hit 10K steps.

I’m 61. I do 3 gym sessions a week (one HIIT, one weights - focussed on big lifts for the first half, one including boxing) and walk rescue dogs from the local home 2 or 3 times a week. I also go on periodic walks with friends, it that’s not regular. I walked the last 115k of the Camino Frances to Santiago de Compostela last May, so my stamina is ok.

I've been thinking about walking the Camino for a while now. What time of year did you go? I imagine it gets quite busy.

I do zero. Used to be a runner but have never been the same post Covid and I can’t exercise anymore so now I do nothing. Amazing how much more time I have 😂

We went in late May. We were told by lots of people it would be very busy and, yes, in places it was. We walked our own pace and did shorter legs than standard and there was lots of time when we were in woodland with nobody in sight at all. It was fantastic. Avoiding standard stage bottlenecks definitely helped though.

I’m early 40’s with one child and work FT. I do 2 x heavy weights sessions per week, and 3 short runs (no more than 5k, varied pace), and one yin yoga class which is delightful. Long walks at weekends. I’m fat regardless though.
I’m intrigued by people saying no one they know exercises. We’re not a fit family at all but my Mum swims / walks / does Pilates, Dad runs, my partner goes to gym, golf and padel.
I don’t know many people who don’t do anything but we do it so we can eat and drink too much as much as anything else!

IwanttoWFH · 27/02/2026 21:37

I thought I was good with my exercise but a lot of people on this thread put me to shame!

I go to one Bodypump class a week after work
I go to the gym on a Saturday morning and do about an hour and 20 mins of core exercises and weight training
Pilates on a Sunday

I walk around 7,000 steps a day (commuting and in the office).

I commute into London four times a week. I already get up at 5.30am. I don’t think I could fit anymore in, I’m knackered as it is!

DonnaHadDee · 27/02/2026 22:45

I have a fairly long commute, but can take a break midday when I go for a 5k run three days. I do another 10k run at weekend.

When younger I played a lot of hockey, and grew up with a lot of farm work, so I’m used to being active. I do make a conscious effort to be active. So many people just sitting around on their phones these days … it’s a choice I guess …

None.Other than afew walks to the school (5 mins away) afew times a week in the spring and summer.
It will probably catch up with me at some point, but I just hate exercise! I have never been good at sport, and also find the gym, swimming lengths, running etc so mind numbingly boring and repetitive (Which is also one of the reasons I don't have a dog, as I would get so bored constantly walking it around the same area again and again!)

The only thing I maybe wouldn't mind would be yoga (used to do it some years ago) or dance classes, but with 2 young kids, 1 on the way and limited money and time, attending clubs each week is difficult and also wouldn't want to go on my own.Maybe one day.

DH loves exercise and gets a real mental boost from going to the gym or lifting weights, which is great for him but i just can't relate to it personally!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/02/2026 23:47

I do about 13000 steps a day average. A dog walk every day, a run 3 x a week and a couple of classes. I work from home so other than this I am pretty sedentary. I would like to have time to stretch more, and do more strength training, but I always prioritise running.

AudTheDeepMinded · 28/02/2026 08:24

Walk to work and back about 50 mins total each day. Work in a very physical job with lots of manual handling. That's it!

Illbethereinaminute · 28/02/2026 09:19

I'm on my feet every day at work so I get at least 10,000 steps in just from that.

I try and do a 2 mile walk for the school run, time and weather dependent.

I do 3 cardio sessions a week, either at the gym or restarting back into running so I'm at the very beginning of couch to 5K. I'm not following it 100% because I have various injuries in recovering from so some weeks it might be 2 runs not 3 and less time running, more walking.

Aiming for 3 strength sessions in the gym and 3 rehab sessions with different exercises.

With children who can't be left alone for long periods of time it's not easy to fit everything in especially if I'm also trying to have a social life/family time/give my husband time for his social life. I just do what I can, especially now that I'm not training for anything.

I used to be the same but a few things changed for me.

Firstly I embraced the boredom. I actually enjoy the one hour a day when I don’t have to think, decide, answer, busy busy busy. I like the switch off.

Getting older (I’m 58) and struggling With arthritis in my knees I suddenly realised that my body is not going to last me into a long and active Retirement unless I did something about it. (I now have pain free knees after 18 months of really consistent training).

finally I just kept doing it, day in, day out until it was so embedded in my routine that it requires no willpower, it’s just what I do. That’s been the real change.

I hope that doesn’t sound preachy, just my take on that “I hate exercise” mindset which I had for most of my life.

congrats on the pregnancy by the way!

JumpingPumpkin · 28/02/2026 14:07

Not enough - but I am doing a 15 mins workout at home (sometimes a bit longer) every day that I can fit it in. Started with beginner ones and now doing some slightly harder ones. Mix of cardio/abs/whole body and pilates. This is 15 mins a day exercise more than I did previously, definitely feel better for it.

Chewbecca · 28/02/2026 14:29

I didn't do any until I retired either. I was completely and utterly exhausted from work / parenting and really had zero energy left to exercise.

On retiring I made a very deliberate choice to use some of my time to exercise and it's a habit now & I happily go automatically. I do 3 or 4 classes a week, still not as much as many of the posters on this thread but loads for me and I am glad I am now an exerciser, hoping it will make my body hold out healthily for longer.

I think you probably make a good point about fitting it in where you can. I live in an extremely hot place so a walk is difficult but theres a dad at DD’s swimming lessons who basically just walks around the pool for an hour, think he’s getting his steps in. He’s definitely lost weight, he’s a bigger guy and he’s looking well.

Eurgh, will try to get back to doing something and then try to squeeze in what I can. I started dreading the 5 hours of weight training, I think I need to simplify and destress my routine.

I do 20 mins weights 5 x a week. I prob should be doing more but it's what is feasible and I can realistically do. I also just don't have the pre child energy and desire to do a 2 hour stint.
Swimming dad has the right idea too.

Just do what you can for now and see how you get on! Good luck

Leavesandthings · 28/02/2026 19:18

I haven't read the whole thread but very impressed by the exercise regimes and also very aware that the sample is self selecting and biased!

I need to get more exercise and have been much fitter in the past through regular running and more active jobs. I've never been into any form of strength training and realise I should address it. I just hate it.

Currently, about 2-3 hours tennis (with lots of doubles which isn't as good exercise as singles), walk a lot in life (several hours a week all in), some casual yoga/stretching and that's about it.

I’m in my 50s.
Swim, Pilates, body pump and a run (5-10k) once a week. My job is physical, I walk to and from work.
I think I do too much, my body certainly feels it.
I’d be curious to know what others my age do

I’m mid 50s and do 2 (sometimes 3) body pump classes a week and 1 Zumba and 1 step class and I walk home 5 days a week and walk the dog at the weekend - my job is a mix of desk and active work and some weeks my knees feel ancient and sometimes fine so I am sticking with it while I can!

ChiefCakeTestertoMaryBerry · 28/02/2026 20:50

I swim 4-5 times a week, usually 50-60 lengths but sometimes 70 or 80.

Walking, including walking the dog (but she’s a slow walker). I try and do at least 10k steps per day.

Cycling but not long distances and on an e-bike. Running 5k once or twice a week, but I haven’t been this week as I was aching so much from digging the garden.
