I have it and have been on medication for it for 3 years now. Im 46. I had very large kidney stones surgically removed 2020 and a urinary tract stent put in (worse than the op) and after they removed it months later i started to occasionally get pain in my bladder, cystitis like symptoms but no sting, increased urgency, couldnt empty fully, literally want to pee constantly and zero control of bladder...I could never be away from a toilet at times. But it was inconsistent to start. Gp thought it was other meds I was on to start, kept fobbing me off but I knew I wasn't ok and kept going back as it gradually was getting worse and worse. Eventually they referred me back to urology, had to wait of course and they diagnosed and ive been on medication since 2023. 2025 I found i was getting the same symptoms again, a lot less but the medication not being quite as good and gp upped my dose. I still pee a lot but no discomfort or other symptoms.
Im convinced it was the stent that damaged my bladder, I was fine before.

Wholenutislife · 24/02/2026 04:29

Oh bladder training. They tried to fob me off with that first..I already did pelvic floor. I actively push through to make sure I fully empty my bladder now, so its important to retrain the bladder for sure

DS has it, he’s only 32. Had it around 19 the first time and it “cured” with medication. Was off the medication for about eight years then it’s got worse and worse, back on the medication but blood tests showed his kidneys were only functioning at 60%, he’s now waiting for an ultrasound on his kidneys.

I'm following with interest.

I have a diagnosis of autism and I'm waiting for ADHD asessment..so I think some of mine is phycological, especially at night ..I also wet the bed as a child untill age 13 ..and I'm always worried that will happen as an adult

It's really effecting my life ,if I have to leave the house I don't drink ..but I can't go longer than an hour without weeing ,and I get such a bad pain in my bladder if I don't wee when I need to ..I'm getting to the point where I'm almost housebound ,but not quite ...there's no way I could hold a job down like this .. currently I'm a carer for two family members

Yes, with medication it is fully controlled. I have no intention on coming off the medication so hopefully all will good now.

I was like this before medication. I cant tell you how many times I got caught short and ending up peeing down an alley and all sorts...literally no choice. The medication has really helped that

Wow ,that sounds amazing
Sometimes I'm desperate to wee and literally a drop comes out

I've cut out all fizzy except fizzy water ,and all caffeine..and been through boxes of cystitis medicine..so I definitely haven't got cystitis now
I'm praying this medication helps
But I'm very worried it might make me wet the bed ..as an adult that would be mortifying

I thought I had this. Till I cut down on drinking tea to one or two cups a day.

I am on the same. Started on 5mg and now on 10mg.
Don't let yourself get dehydrated by not drinking.
At that start I dread to think how many cystitis sachets I went through, madness. I know how horrible it is so I do feel for you. I am lucky I work at home. It would have been a nightmare if not. Even now, ill go and half hour later need to go again but the medication really does help on the whole. It took a few weeks. No side effects thankfully

I can drink caffeine and fizzy drinks now but before I was on medication it was a big no. Alcohol used to make it worse too

Meto , literally boxes and boxes .. luckily no restrictions on buying in supermarkets as own brands were definitely cheaper..I'd leave the house taking a box in my bag and adding it to water out an about .
I do completely forget to drink
I need some app or something that gives me a nudge

I don't touch any of it as it really irritated my bladder.
On the bladder training it was saying to start by weeing and then weeing again to force out the wee
But my friend who had prolapse said we must never force out wee ,we should relax the bladder to wee .
So I'm a bit confused by that

@Wholenutislife ..so what changes did you notice when you started on medication..what should I expect

I've had an overactive bladder for a few years along with a cystocele and rectocele. I have a pessary for the prolapse and was on a medication for the bladder that wasn't very effective. I saw my consultant 3 weeks ago and am now on Mirabegron and it's been life changing! Hardly any urgency, no bladder pain and I'm going 3 hours without a loo trip. It takes up to a month to get fully into the system so I'm hoping it will get even better at relieving my symptoms.

ageingdisgracefully · 24/02/2026 12:13

I've had it since my daughter was born. She's 24. I take Solifenacin which helps, although it's not completely gone. It's the unpredictableness of it that's the problem for me. I don't drink when planning a journey or when on holiday - I get anxious about toilets, particularly abroad or in unfamiliar places.

Some of your symptoms sound horrendous and I have so much sympathy. It's a life-limiting condition, no doubt about that.

It certainly is yes ..I feel very trapped
I actually saw you can have an operation where the bladder is on the outside of your body in a bag and you emptied it .
That would be amazing
I could have my life back ..I can't remember when I was able to live a normal life without this bothering me

I'm pretty sure I have both those as well .I'm starting on constipation meds to see if it helps .
What did you have done for them .
I thought I'd had a full vagina prolapse..but doctor said no ,but sides are saggy leaning in

Depending on how old you are, over active bladder might be treated by vaginal oestrogen. Vagifem has practically stopped my problem. Also consider taking magnesium glycinate. Again this can help the involuntary muscle contraction you can experience with an over active bladder.

I did think this ..I'm 53
But she prescribed epimax oatmeal cream ..so...
I don't know

As part of the ageing process and a reduction of oestrogen, the area around the vagina becomes thinner. This includes the urinary tract. This can result in an irritated bladder and urethra. Ask if you can try a vaginal oestrogen replacement. I saw a gynaecologist as an outpatient and she prescribed Vagifem for me. It’s a game changer and as it’s applied locally, there are virtually no side effects. I certainly don’t have any.
