Would you eat a cake with a (real) spider on it?

I bought a cake from my local bakery. I just decanted it to have with a cuppa and a spider crawled out from the paper bag. The spider was a big fat one - the body was probably 20p sized and a kind of grey/black colour. The cake is a chocolate brownie (quite gooey). I couldn't see if the spider had any chocolate on its legs because it scuttled away, but my question is...should I eat the cake or bin it? (If it was a big fat fly I would probably bin).
I've done a poll if you might kindly answer. I hope I have provided enough information here for an informed choice. (Also my tea is getting cold).

Spiders are pretty clean, as far as I'm aware!

Iamsotiredandfedup · 23/02/2026 11:41

Nope not for me thank you, my imagination would tell me that she’s laid all her spider eggs on my brownie and I’m about to eat them 😂

ToKittyornottoKitty · 23/02/2026 11:41

I wouldn’t eat it, I’m not afraid of spiders and I'm fully aware they can crawl over the food at any point. But it’d still make me gip so it’s a no from me.

I wouldn't, but I don't think there's a good reason not to.

ManchesterGirl2 · 23/02/2026 11:43

I thought you meant the spider was still on it! Like a disturbing decoration.

If it's now spider-free, I would not waste a cake.

Frostingle · 23/02/2026 11:48

Nope wouldn't eat it. Not because of the spider but because of the bakery's standards. Complain to the bakery.

I love spiders and have kept them, they are pretty clean. I have no doubt free roaming ones will have scuttled over the non fridge fruit (which is washed before consumption) or snuggled up in the bread bin but I don't run a food business.

LamonicBibber1 · 23/02/2026 11:54

Hmmm. This is a hard one.

On one hand, I would just obsess about eggs laid on it or something.

But .. On the other hand, my naturally excessive greed would probably overtake.. I mean, if it crept out at some other point and you hadn't noticed it, you'd have enjoyed that brownie by now... Although I would inspect it first, using my phone torch 😅

LamonicBibber1 · 23/02/2026 11:55

I would probably check the hygiene rating/ "score on the door" of the bakery too actually, as the odd rogue spider can't be helped, but actual low standards, nah no cake for me!

FryingPam · 23/02/2026 11:59

That’s a tricky one, I hate spiders and love cake. I do leave fruits and other things outside in my kitchen over night and probably spiders did walk over them, and they can find their way into cupboard to walk over plates. Thats how I would justify eating it to myself.

ultracynic · 23/02/2026 12:16

I’d thinly slice all the edges off and then scoff it.

Supposing it had laid it's eggs or pooed on the top!

sweetpickle2 · 23/02/2026 12:25

Good question.

I'd move out.

😮😮😮😮😮 I agree, I would think the same.

TheSandgroper · 23/02/2026 12:26

Australian here. I would trim the edges and eat it.

whytheduck · 23/02/2026 12:27

From a safety point of view it's probably fine, but I wouldn't be able to stop thinking about it and it would put me off.

I think you'd be able to see spider eggs.

To be fair, any number of spiders could be doing that on any baked good in any bakery anywhere.

didgeridid · 23/02/2026 12:35

I also thought you meant like a dead tarantula cake topper 🤣
As the spider ran off, I'd still eat the cake.
ETA I'd be more worried about the free spider roaming around the house 🤣

caljohn · 23/02/2026 12:35

I could never. It’s probably not rational, given I can’t explain why I could never, but it’s a fat no from me.

BauhausOfEliott · 23/02/2026 12:40

I wouldn't - but that's because I've got a spider phobia, not because I think spiders spread germs. I've certainly eaten things that, eg, a wasp or a moth has landed on.

Musicmummy63 · 23/02/2026 12:40

I couldn't relax and eat cake with a big spider roaming around! Gives me the shivers just thinking about it!!

Connachtfive · 23/02/2026 12:41

🏃‍♂️ No way!

CreepyCoupe · 23/02/2026 12:42

Wouldn’t bother me.

Boriswentcamping · 23/02/2026 12:43

I found a massive earth worm inside a leek (supermarket leek wrapped in plastic) it was still alive and wriggling. I know logically that worms exist in the soil and veg wouldn’t grow without them, and this worm had likely helped my leek to grow, but I have such an intense dislike of worms that no matter how much I washed the leek afterwards the whole experience of finding it and getting it out of my sink and the shock, really freaked me out and we had beans on toast for dinner that night 😂

champagnetrial · 23/02/2026 12:46

Ha, thank you all. I was really torn between 'why not' and 'no thanks'. I couldn't articulate why I thought no thanks, apart from 'yikes'. I didn't even think of eggs or bakery hygiene. Good points!

Anyway, I checked the poll and it was marginally in favour of eat, so I did, but I just checked again and it's swung to a big fat bin it, so now I feel like the old woman who swallowed a fly but didnt know why....
